I also think that would be a good idea. Maybe like a vehicle permit
or something...

I think that is a good idea. The forest service permit issued by the
Mesa District Rangers for the Bulldog Canyon area is by vehicle, not
person/family.

But asking the State to change this would make us organized (oohhhh
the "O" word) right? LOL - Jose

Hi Joey........
I agree but there are limits and there are mitigating actions that could be
taken before eliminating OHV........ they have NOT eliminated horses,
mountain bikes or hikers....... simply posting signs relating the problem
along with asking OHV to not do "donuts" and/or "stay on existing
trails"....... or stay out of the "power dust areas" etc etc can bring the
dust particulates into acceptable levels in a large number of riding areas.
There are areas we, as OHV recreationists, will maybe have to call upon our
fellow recreationists and find those that can donate things like water
trucks and/or gravel/DG for problem areas. There are sometimes answers that
work BEFORE closures but the agencies find it much simplier to CLOSE.....
and believe me.......... these areas won't be reopened if we all sit back
and accept any closure without proof of EPA violations etc. I know for fact
the Jackrabbit/McDowell closure was simply from a disgruntled resident
calling the county and complaining. NO tests were done nor were there any
mitigating actions taken.......(as listed above)... in fact NO ONE within
the ASLD knew anything about this specific closure until after it was done
by ONE person within ASLD....... although they claim they "approved" the
closure.

Yes, we do have to pay attention to the dust levels but when OHV get blamed
for ALL of it with no exceptions to the developers and/or ranchers/farmers
or other recreationists we need to step in Joey or we WILL lose everything
simply because it's the easy way for the agencies to handle us.

Without going into pages of "bandwagon" issues the entire country is under
the same pressures but the southwest is getting hit the hardest.........
probably because we have more trails/lands to recreate on; we have more
recreational vehicles.... 4x4 and ATV's; AND because we happen to "live in
the dust bowl of the US" we have MORE DUST which immediately cause more
problems than we'll be able to solve............... I honestly feel a large
number of "problem issues" could be solved, or at the least helped, simply
by posting signs asking recreationists to "RESPECT the areas/trails......
ABUSE (such as making too much dust) will close our lands/trails. I posted
a sign on one of our exteme trails almost two years ago noting "by-passes
will close our trails.... please stay on the trail". To this day no one to
my knowledge has gone past the sign nor has anyone destroyed the
sign..........

I guess we simply have to stay vigilant and join together........... Sandee

What Jim said is about what I was going to say during the driver's
meeting for the 6:30 AM group. (So....I'll pass it along again for
those that are in the 2nd group.)

I'll be looking to do the same for our group...spacing the more
experienced drivers with built up rigs between those that are newer to
the hobby.

If we have 20 people in our group, it will be impossible to stop at each
and every obstacle and wait until everyone is over it, for the following
reasons:

#1...I would have to park about a quarter mile past the obstacle to
ensure enough room for everyone's Jeep to clear the obstacle and still
have room for everyone behind them.

#2....Refer to #1...it ain't gonna happen! I'm too old to get that much
exercise...it might kill me! LOL

Beg, borrow, but don't steal, a CB radio for the trip if at all
possible. You will miss out on all the remarks, insults, heckling, etc.
that are part of the run. (this was said with a BIG smile)

Please arrive at the assembly spot with enough time to disconnect, air
down, etc....what ever it is that you feel you need to do to your rig.

I too am looking forward to seeing both the old and new faces. Please
remember that I am terrible with names....let me repeat that for the
reading impaired....I AM TERRIBLE WITH NAMES! If I stare at you with a
blank look while you are talking to me, give me a break and tell me your
name! (it comes with getting old....just ask Bill Mish!)

I think that is all for now. Check your rigs one more time to make sure
all is in good order. Scott Kruize called me earlier this afternoon and
told me he found a bad u-joint in his rear CV driveshaft today. Scott
takes good care of his equipment....if it happens to him, it can happen
to you too. (watch, I'll have something break on this run after
commenting about this so much)

See you all on Saturday!

Subject: RE: Re: Az State Land Trust Permits

I HATE always being the "bad guy" in this issue BUT....................

The STATE LEGISLATURE dictates 'ALL PERSONS USING STATE TRUST LANDS FOR
RECREATION MUST HAVE A PERMIT TO DO SO". PERIOD.

As the Rec permit is issued at this time until we push some MASSIVE
"legislative change" this is the way it will stay. As I've said in the
past............... if you call the Land Dept. they will tell you "everyone
must have a permit" or "immediate family only under the family permit".
What "I'm saying" is: So long as you have a "rider" with you and you're not
stopping and/or camping on State Trust Lands I doubt anyone is going to stop
you and check ALL passengers..... if you are camped/stopped they WILL check
for permits.

We're losing the "issue" again........... State Trust Lands ARE NOT "public
lands". ALL 9.8 million acres CAN be permanently closed to everyone if they
so chose. When these lands were GIVEN to the State of Arizona it was given
with ONE stipulation.........."MAKE MONEY FROM THE LANDS TO GO TO THE
SCHOOLS AND PRISON SYSTEMS IN THE STATE". MOST of these funds are simply
from "leasing....... grazing and mining" and/or "selling". The recreation
permits are actually a losing proposition for the Land Dept. which were
appointed as the "Trustee" for the Trusts.

Get with the program guys............... $15.00 or $20.00 a YEAR cannot,
nor will not, hurt anyone. If the fees were $35.00 each time you went out
(as is the fee in most areas allowing 4-wheeling in the east) I could
understand your heartburn... We are not being pushed into "fee parks" as
the rest of the country is. The recreationists from the midwest, and east
cannot believe how easy we have it but yet we seem to do the worst moaning
and *****ing.

The Bulldog Canyon permit is by "vehicle" EACH time you go............ and
it's ONE trail. The State Trust Rec permit is good for over 9 million acres
of land 12 months each year............

Subject: RE: 2 More closures

Brian,

I can not speak to the North Valley closure as I am unfamiliar with that
area.

It was sad and happy (yes, at the same time) to hear about the Buckeye
closure. Sad because I hate to see land removed from the inventory that
we have available for use. Happy because it was only 78 acres.

I drive by the Buckeye closure twice a day....and it is bad, as far as
the dust is concerned. One day, last week, I went past there in the
early morning. A pickup truck, which I caught up with several miles to
the west, was traveling through this area. The dust that it kicked up
looked just like a fog bank. There was ZERO breeze that morning and the
dust hung in the air, about 20 fee thick off the ground. It went on for
more than a mile that way. That is the dust that is causing the
closure.

Now....on a brighter side (if it can be called that), with the acreage
that was reported, it can not extend out into that area of the White
Tanks were Tax Collector, Apetizer, Firebird, etc. trails are
located.....not when it states that it is in the vicinity of McDowell
Road and west of Jack Rabbit. Those trails are about 5 or more miles
west of Jack Rabbit so they are most likely in the clear.

When I go home each day, I see the little quads and dirt bikes in the
area mentioned....and they do turn it into a dust bowl, no question
about it.

Please understand that I am not justifying the closure or these two
sections of land. I am commenting on them and the circumstances that
surround the Buckeye section.

Subject: [az_vjc] 2 More closures

2 more land closures in Arizona...read on....
This was an article that was found in the Arizona Republic.

Off-Roading is banned from 2 sites

In the name of curbing air pollution, the state has banned motorized
vehicles from two tracts of state-owned land in the Valley.
The indefinite closures affect 78 acres newar Buckeye and 642 acres
in the far North Valley.
Both parcels are undeveloped and often used by all-terrain vehicle
enthusiasts. The vehicles chew up the desert crust, which holds dust
in place, and then kick up microscopic particle pollution that
worsens air quality.
The state took the action on the advice of the Maricopa County
Enviromental Services Department, which is responsible for enforcing
dust control rules. The county felt that the two tracts of land were
a troublesome source of particulate pollution, said Nick Simonetta, a
spokesman for the state Land Department.
The idea is to let the land "heal", Simonetta said, adding that the
motorized-vehicle ban will last until particulate levels drop enough
to satisfy health standards.
The North Valley site is north of Cloud Road and between Seventh
Street and Seventh Avenue. The Buckeye tract is between Interstate 10
and McDowell Road, west of Jackrabbit Trail.
People can still use the land for other activities, such as hiking
and horseback riding, Simonetta said. That requires a permit,
available from the department at (602) 542-4632 or through it's web
site at www.land.state.az.us/support/faqs.htm

As far as I'm concerned this is BULLSH!T *(pardon the language)* them
damn gas powered leaf blowers kick up more dust and crap into the air
than my truck does. What a way to keep some high paid pollitical kiss
***** working. Anyways enough of that crap but here's the article and I
hope that some of you take this as a wake up call as I have, we're
getting a bad rap for something is so irrelivent that it's amussing
to read. Anyone interested in contacting me for a possible follow up
on this article feel free, I would really like to see the actual
reports that justify this closure.

All,

I received this email off the ATR website today and I called the detective
just to make sure this was for real. The down side is if you have bought
a OHV which matches one of the numbers below you probably wont get your
money back. The upside is if you call this guy and let him know you bought
one it wont completely ruin your day as if you got stopped on the street.
If you are approached, you may want to call the detective and let him know
so they can try to recover the other stolen goods.

According to the detective the people selling them do so in a manner
similiar to the stereo sellers, ie "pssst hey buddy want to buy a raptor
cheap? Its suplus from the factory". Bottom line, if its too good to be
true it probably is.

Please forward to any and all of your friends who may be interested.

Thanks

Here we go again, putting the buggy before the horse. Do you know for sure what is wrong. Have you opened the cover to investigate. Are you starting a bandwagon for everyone to jump on without the proper information. This seems to be the norm for some of the people in this club, which makes me wonder why I am a member.

But then I remember, maybe I can help some people and also receive help and information at the same time.

The rear most likely would have had problems long before if there was an install error. Well within the 90 day labor warranty. It upsets me to see people jump to conclusions without knowing.

Please bring it in to us and let us look at it, we have a ton of experience, probably more than anyone in town. We have a solid reputation for having what you need and good service. So before the rest of those who read your post and jump, as some already have, go see what's wrong and get it resolved.

Bolts just don't back out after 18000 miles.

I just wanted everyone to know that If you want to still be a part of this
Lunch, you still can. I felt bad because I concentrated so much on the South
end of town and didn't think about the North siders, and I apologize for
that. so, I will be in the North side of town. I was thinking about cactus
and cave creek road on the n/e corner from 6:00p.m. to 8:00p.m. I'm not too
familiar with this side of town and have no knowledge of what's there, so I'm
taking my chances. If you want to still participate in this lunch, it will be
$5.50 paid in full or pay $2.75 Wednesday and then pay the other half at the
switchback in crown king. if you have any questions feel free to call me at

Subject: State Trust

In answer to Sandee's comment about what I thought would be a good
change to who the permit covered, I want to clarify a couple of
points. As far as the the law says[every person must have permit], if
the permit covered everyone in the vehicle they would be there on a
permitted basis. I dont think any of us, has a problem buying a
permit, the problem is that they seem to be to restrictive as to who
is covered. What a PITA it is, an out of state friend drops in on
Friday evening, you are going wheeling on Sat. and there is no way
you can get a permit for that friend to ride along. You mention to
your neighbor that you're going wheelin' and he wants to go, you have
an empty seat, but you have to tell that person no, you dont have a
permit, and there iz no time to get one. We have a member from VJC
that is going on the Crown King Anv run, he is going to taken his
elderly aunt, she will prolly never be on State Trust Land again, to
be legal she needs a peermit, come on, get real. At the very least,
there should be a way to obtain a permit on-line and pay with PaY-pAL
Or such as that. Come,on this is the 21st century,

There will surley be other views on this, lets get them out
in the open, and hammer out something that is workable for the
wheeling community, and the state land trust people. If nothing elsr,
I or someone else can get with a state legislator, and we can work on
the existing statute. I personally think the current policy is based
on someones interpation of what is written.

The state wouldn't lose much if any money, there are x amount
of vehicles, and x number of seats. What should it matter if the
other seat has your wife, girlfriend or your Granny in it?

Tech: im just getting back into the jeeping thing again, i gave up my 97tj for a car now bought a 95yj as a toy. Im currently looking for lifts for my new toy and curious on what you may suggest. Im looking at putting 33" tires on it so for a lift iv decided on a 3.5" lift with a 2" body lift or a standard 4" lift. Which lift would give me little vibration and be withing a moderate price range?
Also my new toy is the 4 cyl "S" package so it came bare boned. Id like to take it out more during the summer months but its to dang hot. Where could i pick up a A/C unit and controlls and would it be hard to install?

Gary,

I really do not believe that anyone is against your idea nor the logic
supporting it. For all the right reasons in the world, it makes good
sense.

My buddy from SoCal has a 1 year permit, obtained this past Easter. I
hope he can make it back to go wheelin' before it expires next spring.
He actually got in two days of recreating so I guess for an "out of
stater", he got a bargain.

I applaud your efforts of taking this to your legislative representative
and seeing if it can be changed.
