Hi all i have a friend that is wondering if a HP d30 is strong enough to handle 35s? He has a 91 yj, 4 cyl, sm420 and 4.88 gears. he is getting ready to add 35s instead of his 33s he has now. If not do you think that 27spl alloy axles would be strong enough to handle them? He doesnt want to spend the money for a super 30 kit, since he plans on going a D44 n the next couple years

You will get a lot of conflicting arguments on this situation.
Let's watch.......:lurk5:

I have 36 inch tsl/sx on 30 with chromo axles and only break them every now and again, but I am pretty hard on my stuff. I think he should be fine without heavy foot. I know that takes a lot of fun out of it though.

Im hoping so, I am currently building a hp 30 with 30 spline alloys, 4:88's and arb. Im also downsizing to 35's. It seems a d44 is a wasted step ..... with the cash I would through at building a decent one with thick tubes I could of bought a 60. So im going with the hp30 for now.

if i remember right the TJ d30 is different then the YJ d30. I think that the TJ has stronger ujoints and more splines...

You are right about smaller joint stock, but they dont make 30 spline inners with small u-joint.

Anything can be broken and any combination can be successful :)
I run a locked D35. I can hear the clicking of the locker and the ticking of the time bomb ready to break :)
I guarantee you can break any axle if your foot is heavy enough and the terrain is just right. There are a lot of people running 35's on a D30 but I think running 35's on a D35 is pushing the envelope just a little too much. Don't spend any more money on a D35 than you have to.
The front axle spends most of it's time coasting or pulling you over obstacles, the rear axle takes a great deal of the load and also tends to bind up more.

I think the ring and pinion from a YJ is stronger than a TJ, right? i think the 260 u-joints are going to be the weak link.
Also, running the weak 4 banger should help.

the yj and xj ring and pinion are both reverse cut... on this here interweb it says its around 30% stronger than the lp 30.

i run 35s on a locked 30 and ive got a really heavy foot snap shafts every few good runs. Tell him too ditch the 260 size shafts and get some with the 297s or even go alloys

thanks guys, his jeep allready has a 8.8 in the back so he is good there. He seems pretty light footed and takes it easy on his stuff. I think he is just going to run the stuff stock, The D30 has theaxle shaft out of a TJ so he doesnt have the disconnect and has the larger U joints.
Thanks

I have was told a 4cyl would be hard pressed to snap a D30 with "Alloy axles and 297 joints..." Drive smart and you will be fine.

So far with alloy shafts and X joints, I haven't broken a D30 shaft running 35's, locked. Can't say the same for stock shafts though.:sifone:

It will be his D35 rear that will grenade. The D30 with Alloy USA shafts should be fine. Get good joints though.

I'm running 36" TSL/SX's with my D30 & alloy shafts and haven't had a break yet. If he gets alloys, he should be covered on the larger u-joint.
For an idea of what trails the D30 has been through and my driving style, take a look at my avatar.:)

x2 on the D30 with the alloy shafts, running 36" TLS radial swampers no problems. It's possible to break with the right amount of effort though.
