View Full Version : Tuffy Overhead Console...yay or na?

For awhile now, I've been thinking about the Tuffy Overhead Security Console. From the reviews I've read, it seems like it is well worth the money. Has anyone ever worked and/or driven with one? My concern is that I'm a pretty tall guy, and I don't want to bang my head into the side of it, or have it take up too much space.

If I went ahead and got one, I'd be installing both CB and VHF radios inside.

Any AVJC Sponsors have any deals on one for a '98 TJ?

Thoughts? Concerns?

thanks,

alex:confused:

Be very careful going with anything overhead. In a rollover it could be the sole cause of major injury. One member comes to mind a few years back and changed his life and family went thru hell. If you do decide to full roll cage and 5point harness. I wouldn't want you to go thru what others have already done.

Alex

I ran one for about a year with my CB in it and used the other space for wallet, camera and gun when I stopped somewhere and didn't want to carry there but wanted my junk somewhat safe. I'm 5-10 and still hit my head on the trails and never liked it so I took it out. There is no adjustment to mounting it. It goes where it goes and that's it. If it is in the way and you hit your head, too bad and those corners hurt a lot more than padded bars.

I now have the Tuffy security center console between the seats and like it much better. I had Monkey Bars build me a cage with twin bars over the center and I mount a small CB between the bars. I have padded the bars and the CB does not hang down. I like this arrangement much better. I think the overhead is too dangerous and not worth it.

I have one in my garage. The guy I got it from took it out of his Jeep because he kept hitting his head on it. I got it with the intention of trying it myself, however I subsequently installed a full cage and it no longer would fit.

My husband has one in his '69 Bronco. Does not feel good :banghead: on it. One thing I didn't like riding with him. We're both kind of tall too :)

i am glad someone asked about this.. I have my CB mounted to my rollbar and it is a pain. Any of you folks with it sitting around want to let it go for cheap/beer?

wow, thanks for the quick replies.

I still have mixed feelings, I almost want to see/try it for myself. $300is quite the gamble.... guess i'll just sleep on it some more.

How else do you keep all of your gadgets secured? CB Radios, GPS's, iPods, Cell Phones, Ham Radios (if you're into that)etc etc... Maybe I just have too much stuff in my jeep.

My biggest concern is theft w/ running w/o the top. I'd rather not unplug/replug...but thats also better then spending $300 or replacing said items.

I think it depends on the model that you get. My dad's got the single unit in his 04 rubicon and doesn't have any problems with it getting into his head space. I've driven his rig a few times and haven't had any problems with it either.
As far as putting a cage in, any builder should be able to work around the unit without to much of a fight.

I forgot to add that my dad's 6'1" & I'm 6'2", just to give an idea of where our heads are!

I have a tuffy center console that has a seperate slot for radio... I love it and has more storage to lock stuff up than the overhead. And cost about the same... Look at the tuffy site. IMHO

I have the tuffy console with a slot for the radio. Works really well. I would never have a overhead console as I would bang my head on it all the time as I am tall.

As Scully said, I have the single console and keep the radio in it. It is a good secure place for it. I was concerned when I first got it and worried about hitting my head on it, as there is a sharp 90 degree angle closest to the head. There are a few times my head has come close and would have hit if I had a double console, but with the single there's head wobbling space. You might have a problem with a roll over with the OEM seat belts, 5 point harness there shouldn't be a problem.

All those who say they are tall, please state your height. To a kid we are all tall.

If you would like to see how it fits and where it sits in the jeep, pm me and we could meet. I'm @ Cooper and Chandler.

I have three tuffy items.

My glove box for the face plate cover, my console insert for CD's, Ipod, money and various other smaller items and the big tuffy box in the trunk area that holds all the tool type stuff and has room for items bigger then can fit in the glove box or insert.

I was debating on the overhead when I was back in NJ until I smacked my head on a friends.... no thanks!

I have a single door version and no problems with hitting my head. But I could see a real issue with the double model.

I thought about getting one for a long time as well. Then I came to the conclusion that when I get my Poison Spyder Trail Cage in (or similar) I would just have CB mounts welded into place on the center duel bars and if I wanted to get fancy, maybe skin the bottom of those bars so I can throw stuff on top of it.

I've also considered the center security console with the DIM opening for a stereo or what not. I've had one on past vehicles and if I were to purchase another I'd simply use that slot as a control center for toggles/kill switch/etc.

Just something to consider.

I'm 6'3" & expect a PM after the holidays... I was thinking of making a cardboard mockup, but looking at the real thing would work better.

Has anyone seen this site before?

Seems pretty simple, and would work for what I need. (I've come to peace with the fact that nothing is ever 100% theft-proof)
