Hehehe!
You all missed a pretty good time!
Saw allot of super cool cars.
Damn tag game!!
Stu tagged Withers, Withers tagged Anderson, Anderson (Squirrelly little
Sh@#$t bucket tagged me! Sharky was in there somewhere too I believe.....
Ohh well, we all more than made up for it by teasing Mike relentlessly,
then
we unloaded it on an unsuspecting XJ.
The guy came up and introduced himself later, we questioned him about his
Jeep, then congratulated him on being "It"!!
(Sorry, as bad as I am with names, I can't remember his, I'm sure he'll
speak up though.)
The Jeeps get allot of attention at these shows. Seems the hot rod cruiser
crowd has allot of respect for modifying and building up something that you
can do more than cruise the boulevard with.
Had a lengthy conversation with Stu, while the "Kids" drank their "Silver
Sodas"...... They finally offered Stu one, I couldn't believe they tortured
him by making him wait that much. (Younger Generation, Baahh!)
Just as we were really starting to have fun, Mama called and reminded me we
had no kids for the evening.
(Those of you with children can feel me on this).
The guys thought it was pretty big funny that I bolted outta there after
her
call......as far as they are concerned, I'm super Whooped.... I guess
that's
fine by me, I know what's REALLY important in life!
Anyway, I'll probably do it again in a couple weeks. We'll have to see.

Ok I have narrowed it down to this GPS model. http://www.garmin.com/products/etrexVista/
Beside the obvious features I would like to have the electronic compass, altimeter an the WAAS enabled feature for the following reasons.
I would like to use it to mark boundary lines and altitudes on some raw acreage I own. I need to provide a plot plan to the county when I apply for a building permit. It has to show location of buildings, septic well etc and topography. My question is would this unit perform these functions?

I had 4:56 gears (from Ring & Pinion Service, Inc) and ARBs put in my
Dana 44 by Fourwheelers Supply back in Oct 2000 (about 18K miles ago).
In Payson Friday night my rear diff started loudly snapping at the
same speed of the wheels. I pulled the rear driveshaft which made the
snapping noise almost go away and drove it back to Phx with only
front wheel drive.
I believe it's probably the ring & pinion, maybe missing a gear. Any
ideas?
Anybody know an affordable trusted place that can put in new gears
for me? Not sure I trust Fourwheelers Supply any more.

It has been my experience that the altitude readings on a GPS are the most inaccurate. (This can be confirmed by reading some of the GPS primer write-ups available on the web.) I do not know if WAAS will improve on this calculated number or not.
If you are attempting to show the topography of a house plot&.accurate enough to show the drainage, etc&..I dont think a consumer grade GPS receiver will get you there. But again&.maybe the WAAS makes it MUCH better. I do not have it on mine and have not used one that did. It should provide you with fairly accurate lat/long locations on the plot itself.

Have you considered the Magellan Meridian Platinum or Gold? These models have the features you describe below as well. Plus a slightly larger display and rugadized case.
However if you are trying to use these for surveying I don't think these as accurate as you would need them to be. Even with WAAS technology you could be 20 ft off or maybe more depending on your antenna's reception. I believe WAAS is a ground based signal.
I am by no means an expert or even sure if I am totally correct. Just some things to think about.

Clint,
IMHO, you first need to determine what the actual problem is. If the
problem stems from the install, then the installer would be at fault.
If the problem stems from the parts themselves, then there would be
nothing the installer could have done to make those parts any better.
In the case of my recent post concerning a local driveshaft shop, they
left parts OUT of the drive shaft u-joints. That is clearly their
problem and not the fault of Spicer (the u-joint folks).
I would think that you first need to determine what the problem is and
then hopefully the cause of it. Your problem may rest with ARB or the
R&P manufacturer and have nothing to do with 4 Wheeler's at all.

Glad to hear you like your auto. I've always liked mine for off roading. Let us know how the puller fan works after you get it in.
Steven
In a message dated 8/12/02 8:33:46 AM US Mountain Standard Time, fredtj@comcast.net writes:
Swapped out my existing xfer case (with the 4:1) on Saturday for one with
the stock low range (2.72 : 1) and also has the 2wd low (as did my "old"
one). Sunday, took it out for a run, medium hard with some optional tough
spots (4.0 ~ 4.5 trail). I did most of the optional tough areas (with
standing water to add some, mmmm, excitement to it)..
First impressions with the auto, holy crap, why'd I wait so long to swap the
auto in !!!!!!!!!
Even without the 4:1, I have better crawl ratio with the auto (expected).
Everything was as expected, but I still couldn't believe it till I actually
got out and worked it some !!
It's taking a little getting use to using the left foot for braking (when on
the trail).
Going up really steep, really rocky stuff, even wet with sand and some mud,
I can simply crawl right up it with no wheel spin at all !!!!! I'm really,
really pleased with it.
I still have a couple of little issues to work out. The cooling needs some
work. I have a stacked plate tranny cooler that we mounted in front of the
radiator. With that, the engine, just on hot days, with the A/C, runs a
little warming than "normal". The tranny temp is normally fine, maybe a
little cool even, running around 160 ~ 175. The hottest it got was 210,
yesterday. Even though that's "normal" range, I want it to run a little
cooler, on these bloody hot days, crawling slow on the rocks. I ordered an
electric fan (puller), and it'll be here tomorrow. I'm 99.99% sure that'll
fix it.
I have a mechanical, non-clutch, flex fan in it now, but it leaves around
1.5 ~ 2 inches of space around the shroud, and it's allowing some air to be
pulled in around the fan, instead of through the radiator.
That's the only real thing to fix up. I do need to do something with the
rear brakes, such as switching to disks. Once yesterday, when on a really,
really, really steep, extremely rocky section, I had to back down it some to
get back to the Jeep behind me. He had slipped off a rock, almost flopped it
on it's side, and we thought we were going to have to strap him (turned out
we didn't have to). In reverse on that extremely steep area, it was
shockingly hard to hold it with almost all the vehicle weight handled by the
rear drums.
Going down steep declines (going forward), I actually have some engine
braking, though less than I had with the manual and the 4:1. It's easy to
descend (forward) with the brakes.
Anyway, I'm really excited about the whole swap !
Best,
Fred

a huge difference regarding "needing a STL Rec Permit. Almost every trail
we have in the state one must, at the least, cross State Trust Lands. Most
of the BLM lands are land locked within State Trust Lands............. FS
trails get past some of this issue but definitely not all.....
soooooooo................ why not simply purchase a State Trust Lands Rec
Permit and then the "problem" simply goes away. We'll all be legal!
If you want to know "land status" don't forget to stop by the Public Lands
Information Center located at 222 N. Central, Phoenix. Southwest corner of
Central and Van Buren. If you proceed west on Van Buren from Central, there
is a parking garage on the southeast corner of 1st Avenue and Van Buren
(entrance half way between Central and 1st). If you park in the garage the
PLIC will give you a parking voucher to cover your parking fees.
This office is part of the BLM State Office but all agencies support it and
you can get a map of any area in the state of Arizona....................
any size. These maps depict the "Land Status" and are kept as up to date as
possible. Some are free, some a nominal cost.......... The point being you
can always "know where you are" regarding land status......

Subject: wildfire video CDs
This is primarily for the folks that wanted a CD, placed an order with one of the designated video CD coordinators, but have not picked them up yet.
Please&.if at all possible, pick them up this week. Ive been politely nagging the CD coordinators to turn in their money and Ive been informed that some folks have yet to pick up their CDs. I know that we are all busy with getting the kids back to school and such, but if would contact your coordinator and schedule a rendezvous with them, that would help things along tremendously.
This part of the wildfire relief run has gone on for approximately 6 weeks now and I would really like to bring it to a close.
Please, please, please get in touch with the person you ordered your CD from and settle up with them so they can settle up with me as well.
Your prompt attention in this matter is greatly appreciated.
Thanks&&..Stu
p.s. I also have some CDs sitting here at my house that were requested by individual club member 2 or 3 weeks ago who have yet to stop by and pick them up. (hint hint)

I would like to use it to mark boundary lines and altitudes on some raw acreage I own. I need to provide a plot plan to the county when I apply for a building permit. It has to show location of buildings, septic well etc and topography. My question is would this unit perform these functions?

In Payson Friday night my rear diff started loudly snapping at the

snapping noise almost go away and drove it back to Phx with only
front wheel drive.
I believe it's probably the ring & pinion, maybe missing a gear. Any

Best,
Fred

Hi all.......
Just back in town so I've missed most of the communication regarding STL
Permits........ whereas the thought of a "trails book" or identification of
STL trails may be good for the stand point of "knowing trails" it won't make
a huge difference regarding "needing a STL Rec Permit.

If you go farther east towards Roosevelt Lake (somewhere around the
Lake Apache turnoff) there is a marked trail (can't remember the
number) that heads off to the southeast, goes up into the mountains
and then down to the highway. Pretty scenic.

Thanks&&..Stu
p.s. I also have some CDs sitting here at my house that were requested by individual club member 2 or 3 weeks ago who have yet to stop by and pick them up. (hint hint)
