Yes, and no. the AW4 is the tranny out of XJ's. IMO, and a lot of others, it has a smoother shift, better ratios, and more durable.

I have two Aw4's for slae.. $200.00 ea.. it's not a direct swap tho.. there are some electronics involved. Check Stu Olsen's site for a good write up.

You would really only need like 2-3 other guys. You will be amazed at the help you can get from here. It may be a little more difficult for me to be able to make it there (the whole 200 miles away thing). But, with enough planning I could probably swing it.
If you really want to do the AW4 swap, just figure out everything you will need parts wise. Tool wise it may be a little more difficult. If you have access to a shop with with a lift it would make the whole deal A LOT easier. Also, you will want to find a transmission jack. I know, you are probably getting scared now :aagh:. If you just plan everything out in advance, you shouldn't have any problems.
If you would rather just look for a direct replacement....
you should have a 32RH tranny in there right now. However, if you wish to double check, here is how you can check it...

Hey my uncle said that his friend had a slipping tranny on his jeep and replaced some kind of pump on the tranny and fixed the problem  Anybody know if there is such a thing or do you think he misunderstood what they replaced

Have you had your current tranny looked at? It might be better just to rebuild the one you have. If a swap is in order though, I can say the AW4 is an excellent piece of gear. When I bought my XJ in 2000, it was 4 years old. I broke the ignition switch and took it to a shop where my a friend worked. Since he knew I had just gotten it, he checked out the whole thing for me. He said everything looked good except the tranny fluid was burnt. He recommended getting it flushed. I dropped it off at the tranny shop and the tech called me about an hour later. "I need you to come down and check out your tranny, it needs to be rebuilt." I went down there and he showed me metal shavings(aluminum flakes) all over everything in there. He told me if he flushed it, it might not even move. I asked what a rebuild would cost and he said $2200. I promptly asked him to put it back together and I would take it home and figure out what to do. I had other trucks to drive but I didn't have $2200. I continued to drive the Jeep thinking everyday the tranny was going to start slipping. That was almost 7 years and well over a 100k miles ago. The AW4 is still going strong on the same fluid and same filter. Awesome transmission.:fashizzle:

first, have you properly checked fluid(NEUTRAL NOT PARK) ?
checking in park will give false 2 qt high reading (will show normal when is actually 2 qts low)
second, transmission has externally adjustable bands (whole other thread on this).. have you tried adjusting?
when does it slip?
My knowledge of transmissions is, well none, dose anyone want to take a look at it? I could use a second opinion on what to do

Thats the classic, "Look here, mister. See all these here metal shavings? Your tranny is toast! line unscrupulous mechanics use all the time. I used to work at a shop that used to drain the oil, slap a new pan on and claim to do all kinds of work they never did.
Gross.
