View Full Version : Alloy Axle Shafts. Who has Broken Them?

CaptainMorgan

I was just wondering how many broken axle shafts made by Alloy USA, Superior, Moser etc.

I know they aren't bulletproof, but they seem to be better than stock. I am wondering who has broken which ones, and when they broke how was it to deal with the warranty? What were you doing? What size tires do you run?

I also am curious to know what a 30 spline dana44 axle shaft can handle as far as real-world wheeling. I am running Alloy USA F/R becasue I have broken the front and the rear came with the axle.

I broke the ears on a stock dana30 shaft...thats all so far.

You dont want to hear from me! I'm running stock d30/d35 axle shafts in locked axles on 35"s and havn't busted one yet!:stuart:

I'll get cromo's, but first I need to find that perfect axle to put them in!:drool5:

Actually I do enjoy stories of reliable d35's...I saw you in person and can testify that you wheel that thing too.

Have not broken one on my stock jeep. I just got my locking mechanism for the rear diff last night in the mail. Maybe I oughta get a spare axle too. I have only been on the broken arrow and Crown King since I only bought the jeep about five weeks ago.

You are so going to be a poster child on a rescue mission.:fashizzle:When you start wheeling it like a jeep it will go pop.

I have broke 2 stock front ujoints taking out outter shafts. I have broke 2 inner warn chromo shafts one on either side. That is about all in past 5 years of wheeling.

I have broken mostly Dana 30 stock axles, mostly in Moab. Running Yukon alloys in the front for over a year with no problems. Will go to AlloyUSA when they break as I think Alloy is the best and has the best warranty.:sifone:

I wish I didn't vote on this thread. As soon as I say that I haven't broken an axle, I'm sure that one will break. I've got stock 44 shafts in the rear and a Superior "Super 30" up front.

I had two ujoints go bad (broke) in my AlloyUSA's front shafts, the second one spit the caps after only about 10 trails. I called AlloyUSA and asked them about it, next thing I know they are sending me a new outer stub replacement under warranty. Never asked when/where I bought them or anything, just a mailing address ! Talk about awesome customer service.

I run AlloyUSA in the front and the rear and would not hesitate to recommend them to anyone !!!!

I have yet to break my stock shafts :D

But I was out at Paragon with a guy that broke a chromo inner D30 shaft... strange thing was it was the driver side (short-side) shaft and it broke at the splines. It was a Yukon shaft.

U joints are the cause of my D44 with alloys break. If I had an aftermarket joint I doubt the it would have happened.

My D35c snapped after 6 years of use and locked 4 of them. I was on “Pivot Turn” or is it “Pivot Rock” on lower Terminator just after the Z-turn. It lasted all day until I started bouncing. Then pop goes the axel.

I had a front 760 ujoint break (explode) that ALLOY USA had used to assemble the their 30 spline chromo shafts... the energy from the ujoint breaking and the ears of the inner and outer shafts suddenly hitting each other caused both the inner and outer ears to break.

It wasn't a fault in the axles, just a weak point of the ujoint. The ALLOY USA shafts were covered under warranty and this time I went with Yukon Super Joints. FYI... ALLOY USA uses their own "X-Joint" when they assemble their shafts now (supposed to be stronger?). But if you can I'd recommend upgrading to Something like CTMs or Yukon SuperJoints(same as the Jantz Joints) or Longfield Ujoints, etc.

The break occured on the last waterfall on Lower Colatoral Damage.

I've had the yukon superjoints for about a year now and my jeep is a daily driver and I put alot of miles on it. No problem using Yukon SuperJoints in a daily driver even without manual hubs. I check/grease them about once a month.

I twisted the splines on a stock rear D44 shaft running 35" SS and low gearing with a 4 banger.

Currently running Moser shafts in the rear D44 and AlloyUSA chromos in a D44 in the front.

I haven't pulled the rear Moser shafts in a while to check for spline twist, But I imagine they are OK.

I'm not sure, but I think CTM only has u-joints for the Dana 44 & 60. At least I've never seen one for the 30. It would be cool if they made one for the 30. CTMs are supposed to be great u-joints, and easily maintained.

It was U-Joints that I went through like there was no tomorrow... until I replaced them with CTM units... no failures after that.

I did roll the splines on a rear 44 Alloy shaft. However I blame on Hardcore Chic wheelin my jeep the week before. :D Never broke, but could see the splines when I pulled it out for another reason.

Warranty was great. Joe D. took care of it all for me and the no questions asked thing held true. :D

Ive broken 2 Superior 30 spline read D44 shafts, 1 Yukon 8.25 rear shaft, 2 Superior D30 shafts (both short side, 1 at the splines), and countless stock D30 shafts.

I've never broken an Alloy USA shaft. I ran them in my D30 (RIP) and currently have them in my rear 44.

well I just finished my set up and wheeled this past sunday at Chivo falls, 4.56 gears with lockrites front and back. D30 has stock shafts and d35 has yukon chromo, I have 31's right now but I will bump it to 33's well see then. And trust me, I will my thing too....

Ok I broke a stock D30 front years ago. Replaced with alloy's never broke one again.
I broke a stock D60 rear shaft 30 spline running 39.5" tires (expected it) but it did last about 10 runs.
I am now running 35 spline Alloy's front and rear with Longfield joints. No trouble so far.

I broke a US Alloy 30 spline rear Dana 44 shaft not to long ago. I was on a deep undercut plus lodged under a rock outcropping, so I was in a worst case scenario when it broke. The replacement is still on backorder but 4Wheelers took care of me with a temp.

Late YJ D30 and TJ D30 use the same U-joint as D44.

The TJ is when the started using the larger (270x right?) on the D30 from what I was told when I got my D30 alloys at 4wheelers.

I have Superiors in my D35(30 spline) and Alloys(30spline) in the D30. I am only running 33s on a 4banger and I drive cautiously. I don't believe I will have a problem but I am actively looking for an empty XJ-D44 to put Alloys and an ARB in. I have cash, so as soon as I find an empty o0ne I am buying it and selling the Super35...

I will be using Alloy due to their unconditional guarantee... :D

I broke a Yukon 27 spline outer front on the old D30. Was not bound up that hard, and when it went, it took out the stock 27 spline unit bearing. I have since upgraded to a D44 front, with Alloy USA 30 spline inners, 30 spline outers, 30 spline unit bearings and Yukon Super joints. Been WAY harder on them. No problems or twisting of splines....yet. I also run 30 spline Alloy USA rears in the D44....because no one makes a 33 or 35 spline spool yet for a D44. A true testament as to their toughness....my wife had the Jeep bouncing completely off the ground about 20 times while climbing the last fall on CD. The splines are still straight as an arrow. Joe Daro will attest to this, as we were both behind the Jeep pushing to get it up the fall without pulling cable, and we didn't want to get squashed if she let off the throttle. I will only buy Alloy USA from now on, YUKONS SUCK for axles, but the joints and R&P's are great.

Why didn't you just rock stack a highway up the fall? That's what all the cool kids are doing these days. :skull:

'95 YJ's used the 5-297x u-joint in the front D30 (what mine came with). So did the TJ's. The 5-297x was later redesigned into the 5-760x when the TJ Rubicon came out. They are interchangeable.

I've been running Alloy USA's for years in both front and rear D44 uses. I've yet to break an Alloy shaft in these forms:
1) front 30 spline inner 27 spline outer combo-no breakage for 2.5 years. replaced outers with 30 spline upgrade, new unit bearings and alloy x-joints for the step up to beadlocks and 37's
2) rear 30 spline shafts used for ~1.5 years and being run by another poster in this thread
3) rear 35 spline Mas Grande shafts to with a matching ARB. Stepped up because I wanted a stronger locker and to be ready for what was mentioned in #1

The products have treated me well and you can't go wrong with their customer service..... :drummer:

The most Beautiful part of owning a jeep is you can builid it anyway you want...Pretty...Ugly....

You can view scenic Trails or do hardcore crawling........

Or you can trailer it because it doesn't go over 55mph....:smash:

Superior Evolutions in my front 44 (30 spline inner/27 spline outer). Stock rear 44.

35's + lockers + 4:1 + mallcrawlin = no breakage

Who broke the 33 spline shaft for their rear 44? I'm either going to upgrade my rear to the 33 or 35 spline shafts with a Detroit and was curious what it took to pop one?

Broke (2) D30 long side, inners. Both Yukon chromos. Both were waranteed, but I didn't even install the sencond one. Bought a replacement from Alloy USA instead. I carry a stock spare from a TJ, and the Yukon replacement is at home as another spare.

funny it seems more people that voted have broken stock dana44 shafts more than dana35...maybe becasue people think they are in the clear with a stock dana44 so they wheel it harder on average...still interesting.
