I climed under the JY tonight and noticed that if I have the yoke on the rear diff facing up and down (if i lay under it I am looking at the joint cap that is strapped to the yoke) I can move the drive shaft up and down. The joint caps move in the yoke and straps. Should it do this??? I don't THINK it should but ....who am I.
The yoke was replaced last year by the RAT (before I knew better) so were the straps. The straps are tight so what gives??

sounds like you need a new u-joint...it isnt a big deal. I do mine every 6 months even when they arent loose.

If the caps are in and the straps are tight I can only think that the needles bearings in the caps may have gone out or the cups have worn enough to be oblong... I have not experience the 2nd one but heard about it this last weekend... I would pull out the joint and examine it, not hard and would get you closer to your problem identification. Once out the caps should seat snug with out lateral movement.(Yet still twist obviously)

My yoke was stretched and that's what it did, sounds to me that is what you are saying. You said it was replaced once last year ? Did the ujoint fit tight then ? If the Ujoint looks good it may be the yoke, if you have a new ujoint (spare) put it in the yoke and see how it fits, if it fits tight, use that spare joint on the shaft, otherwise it sounds like another yoke.......
Did that make since ? Been working too long today.........

x2, he said it correctly. That is what I meant by wearing oblong, the yoke not the caps...

OK makes since now. I will be P1$$ed if I have to get a new yoke. It only has about 5K miles on it and NO trails.

Is it possible the installer put in a 1310 u-joint when it should be a 1330?
I've seen a worn u-joint move in the caps, but by his description the u-joint caps are moving in the yoke. I'm thinking bad yoke or wrong u-joint.

Just happened to me in my '99 XJ. If you let it go you will twist the caps off and could damage the shaft. Replace 'em and you should be ready to rock (pun intended) :laugh2:
