Kyle,

Sounds interesting. It may be difficult to get the “site stewards” to divulge which cache locations are also ruin sites. That seems to be the biggest problem, from what I could gather. But I would certainly be willing to provide a lift for a land management official or a media person if it will help give people a more accurate understanding of what is happening. I’ve never gone caching so I’ll follow someone that has.

Since this effects both Geocaching and 4x4 groups I thought I would also put this on AZVJC list for your Ideas.

Ok, How about instead of fingerpointing and bashing. Why dont we schedule a
meeting and trip
to meet with the accusers and the media to view the trash they say is caused
by geocaching. And
I would volunteer to help with a cleanup of the areas affected. I a Member
of the Jeep club and
I also enjoy Geocaching. I personally would hate for either group to be
blamed for causing this
kind of damage.

I just moved to the Phoenix area in April and have yet to go Caching. My
twins love to go out
and 'Treasure Hunt' as they call it. We have hit several sites where we
moved from in Central
Florida. We always took garbage bag with us to clean up the mess in the
area. While in
Florida I placed a cache in an area that looked like a small garbage dump.
When I placed the
cache I took out several bags of garbage., and put a note on the web site
that the area had alot
of trash. Every time I went back to check on the cache the trash was quickly
being cleaned up.
When I left Florida I checked the cache area and It was almost like there
had never been trash
there at all. One reason I put the cache in that place was to help clean out
the area. And it worked
very well. It not only provided a good time for poeple searching it also
cleaned up the area dramatically.

I think we could better our image if we were to meet with the officials in
the area and help clean up
the area. It would NOT be a sign that we were guilty of the mess but a sign
that we really care about
this problem and dont want to have a bad picture of our Hobby.
I am not fimiliar with indian ruins, artifacts and petroglyphs area. I
probabally wouldnt know one
if I was standing in one. I would love to visit one and I definatelly would
not want to destroy and areas
of this type, and I think most others feel the same. I could be a good idea
to know for our group to
know what to look form so we stay away from them. We could schedule this
tripand have a BBQ to
promote the Hobby and help Maricopa County Parks and Recreation Department
to educate others
about these types of areas.

Subject: RE: [az_vjc] High Tech scavenger hunt article.

While I think I understand what Jean (roadrunners?) may be trying to say, she does, IMHO, need to be careful about how she states her complaint.

While I am certainly an off-road enthusiast, I am not a geocacher. As such, if people are driving quads and 4x4s to geoache locations and causing problems, then it is the geocachers that are doing it….not the off-road enthusiast. (DUH!)

Now…the above statement is about as stupid as the one that Jean (roadrunners?) wrote, IMO. She is, in my opinion, a dangerous element when it comes to these types of discussions. Finger pointing is NOT the way to solve the problem. Off-road enthusiasts AND geocachers BOTH depend on public access to public land. Without it, we are both without a place to recreate (unless you want to geocache or ramp ricers in the city).

So….my advice to dear Jean (roadrunners?) would be to chill out a bit and stop trying to alienate those that may very well be her best ally in this fight to keep our public lands open and accessible.

Yes….both off-road enthusiasts and geocachers share a common element….the moron that drives around on public land with complete disregard for the land or the laws…..and as she said…the ones that toss fast food wrappers out the window on I-17 (at least she got one thing correct). Once Jean (roadrunners?) figures that out, she will, IMO, not come off as the finger-pointing idiot she appears to be now.

She has yet to figure out that what she is doing is exactly what the greenie folks want….divide the opposition into small in-fighting fractured segments and then pick them off, one at a time. As the old saying goes, “United we stand, divided we fall”. I wish someone would explain this to Jean (roadrunners?) before she helps us all to death.

Timber Chucker!

p.s. Kyle, if you want to filter this back towards the source of your original post, please feel free to do so. It will take a ton of talking to convince me that I am wrong on this subject.

I thought the list might be interested in what some of the people on AzGeocaching.com is responding about this article:

Perhaps the article should have been written about ATVs and 4x4s. We have noticed that there is a definite correlation in the amount of trash and the vehicle access. When you are in areas where you must travel by foot, there is a very small amount of trash. But when you are in areas where vehicles can go, there are always bud light cans by the case and a bunch of other crap one can only wonder why someone took the trouble to haul it way out there, unless it was to use it for target practice and leave it behind. We say TRASHY PEOPLE HAVE TRASHY WAYS. These are the same idiots who throw fast food wrappers out the window on I-17 thinking "someone" else will pick it up. I offer the following rewrite of the article:

An off road vehicle rampage has caused a panic among authorites who say the offroaders are destroying archaelogical sites around the state. Using jeeps and ATVs the slobs can literally drive right to more than 600 sites throughout arizona and vandalize artifacts and throw trash out the window....

It's best to use that linkage adjustment plate. It'll prevent binding. Most all of the better kits include it. I've done two bl's, a 1" and a 2" and did them myself with no real problems. Both of them were the PA brand lifts (and they included the xfer linkage plate, along with radiator drop brackets, etc.).

Has anyone installed a Teraflex 1" body lift on a 2001TJ? Teraflex includes an adjustment plate for the transfer case shifter. I have not seen this piece of hardware with any of the other body lifts. Is it necessary to install? Also, can one person install the body lift or is it a two person installation. Any information and/or tips will be appreciated.

Subject: [TR] Crown King from Lake Pleasant - Saturday, August 17, 2002 - Reminder

Hello All,

Stu Olson is leading a Crown King from Lake Pleasant trail run on Saturday, August 17, 2002.

When: 6:30 AM
Where: Meet at the end of Castle hot springs road where it changes to dirt.
Rating: 3.0-
Length: all day
CB Channel: 4

This is the NOT QUITE AS EARLY AS THE 6:00 AM CROWD trip.

Bring plenty of liquids, etc. Please, no alchohol while we are on the trail/enroute to Crown King (save it for there). If you can't live with that, pick a different time slot.

We'll do all of the options (except for the spot where Sparky likes to end-over his TJ). Of course, you can bypass the options if you wish.

Do everyone a favor....do a good check up on your vehicle BEFORE you get to the trail head. Break downs can certainly happen but don't start the trail with something you are already worried about, a problem you are aware of, etc.

Looking forward to a fun day with everyone!

The Lake Pleasang to Crown King trail is a local favorite. On any given weekend, there will be numerous groups of four wheelers, ATV's and motorcycles heading to and from Crown King. It is a fun and scenic trail into the cooler pines of the Bradshaws. This trail was the first trip ever done by AzVJC.

The trail takes off from the Castle Hotsprings Rd and travels through the foot hills and up the side of the mountain, giving nice views of Lake Pleasant and the Valley. There are some tougher optional sections that can make it interesting.

The trail goes through the old ghost towns of Fort Misery and Oro Belle, both of which are remnants of the Mining era of the Bradshaw Mountains. All that remains now, are foundations and a few crumbling walls. Fort Misery makes a nice place to stop and eat lunch as the small creek usually has running water and there are trees to provide shade.

In the winter months, the trail from Fort Misery through Oro Belle to Crown King will often have snow and/or ice. In the summer, an early start is necessary to stay ahead of the rising temperatures.

Once on top of the mountain, the trail runs through the cool pines and into Crown King. In Crown King there are places to eat and have a drink, and a general store that sells some excellent fudge. The old Crown King Saloon was actually built in Oro Belle, and later hauled up (many years ago) to Crown King and rebuilt. In Oro Belle, the saloon was built into the side of the hill, so the upstairs were mainly accessable from the rear of the building (at ground level). The upstairs served as a place repose for women of ill fame.

There are campgrounds on top of the mountain near Crown King for those wishing to stay overnight. The fastest way down is via the main road which leads through Cleator and toward Bumble Bee. You can split off and go through Cordes Junction, which will get you to the Freeway quicker, or keep going strait and go through the little town of Bumble Bee.

Alternatively, you can take the Senator Highway toward Prescott or Mayer, this can be a very interesting trail during snow season. If you have the time, follow Towers Mountain rd through Crown King and up to the top of Towers Mountain, there are some excellent views and you can join back up with the Senator Highway afterward.

Have fun, remember to bring water and your camera.

Enjoy, and remember to TREAD Lightly!

I noticed that some people signed up for the 6:30 AM slot are also signed up for other times as well. Now that we are a week off of the run, maybe you can make a decision as to which group you plan on running with, so we have a better idea of the real group sizes.

Since we (6:30) are about the same size as the early bird group, our two groups will be leaving at the posted times so that we dont bog down the groups behind us. It will probably happen anyways, but Hackle and I shall try to minimize the impact as little as possible.

PLEASE GET TO THE MEETING SPOT EARLY ENOUGH TO ALLOW YOURSELF SUFFICIENT TIME TO AIR DOWN, DISCO,.....WHAT EVER YOU ARE INCLINED TO DO. We will have a short drivers meeting before we start.

There is always the possibility of popping a radiator hose on these trips so be sure your hoses and ALL fluid levels are in good repair and topped off. There is no reason for everyone to bring 5 gallons of extra water for the radiator. (we could fill a small spa!) Given the number of folks signed up, we will do well if you just bring a gallon (or two) of DISTILLED water from the grocery store. If we dont need it for the radiator, youll have good drinking water for later. Concerning other fluids (motor oil, ATF, gear oil, brake, etc.), the same logic applies. If everyone carries a little bit, well have enough if one or two members should have a major failure and require a fresh fill (share and share alike on the trail).

The group will be using the CB to stay in touch. If you have a FRS radio, feel free to bring it along. If you want to chat to others on the trail with it, thats cool and works great too. Ill have an FRS radio along but dont anticipate simul-casting trail messages.

I think that is about it for now. Looking forward to the run and seeing new faces (and even some of the old ones too!) LOL

You all missed a pretty good time!
Saw allot of super cool cars.

Damn tag game!!
Stu tagged Withers, Withers tagged Anderson, Anderson (Squirrelly little
Sh@#$t bucket tagged me! Sharky was in there somewhere too I believe.....

Ohh well, we all more than made up for it by teasing Mike relentlessly, then
we unloaded it on an unsuspecting XJ.
The guy came up and introduced himself later, we questioned him about his
Jeep, then congratulated him on being "It"!!
(Sorry, as bad as I am with names, I can't remember his, I'm sure he'll
speak up though.)

The Jeeps get allot of attention at these shows. Seems the hot rod cruiser
crowd has allot of respect for modifying and building up something that you
can do more than cruise the boulevard with.

Had a lengthy conversation with Stu, while the "Kids" drank their "Silver
Sodas"...... They finally offered Stu one, I couldn't believe they tortured
him by making him wait that much. (Younger Generation, Baahh!)

Just as we were really starting to have fun, Mama called and reminded me we
had no kids for the evening.
(Those of you with children can feel me on this).
The guys thought it was pretty big funny that I bolted outta there after her
call......as far as they are concerned, I'm super Whooped.... I guess that's
fine by me, I know what's REALLY important in life!
Anyway, I'll probably do it again in a couple weeks. We'll have to see.

I've done this trail allot, but thanks to Scott McMillan for leading it.
It was good to get to wheel with him some more.
Had a buncha guys there, Rick Norman in his XJ making me wish I hadn't sold
mine, and playing Limp Bizkit on his stereo, a man after my own heart!
Scott Maiden was there in his YJ, I couldn't believe he took my line through
the squeeze. What an ANIMAL!

Hehehe.
Mike Chatfield showed us how to unload unnecessary weight on the first rock
ledge.
Of everyone, it was his day for bad luck. Later in the trail he blew a bead.

One of the guys in a YJ tore a sidewall and Scott McMillan patched it for
him. Damn TSL Radials!
This same guy was just gonna spectate, but he ended up running the trail
with us and did well!
I don't remember his name
There was also a guy there in a blue Jeep with "Big" fender flares....
(Don't remember his name either). Are we starting to see a trend here?
Too much tequila will do this to you.......

Anyway, thanks allot for a good run guys.

My pan is flat where this seal goes. The seal that came out is flat. Am I missing something here or does everyone have the wrong seal in the pan gasket kits?

Yeah, I had a great time. It was good meeting some new people (and
Jeeps, Scotts Tonka Jeep is Sweet:P) Oh, and I couldnt believe I
went through your line either;P I just figured, "What more can I hurt
on that side?"

By the way, the guy with the Blue Jeep with big flares is Russel
Gevarter, and that is what remains of a Jeep Renegade.

Lookin' forward to wheelin' with you again Bill.

I don't understand how they can not get it right. I just went through
two sets (one from Auto Zone and the other from NAPA) and they were both
correct except the NAPA one split during installation and was leaking so
we redid it with the Auto Zone set. BTW, NAPA was a Victor set and Auto
Zone was Felpro.

Sorry I can't be of more help Tom. I just haven't ran into this before.

The front seal is flat on both sides like it should be but the rear seal is pointed on the bottom like it is supposed to go into a V shaped groove in the rear of the pan. My pan is flat where this seal goes. The seal that came out is flat. Am I missing something here or does everyone have the wrong seal in the pan gasket kits?

Subject: [TR] Crown King from Lake Pleasant - Saturday, August 17, 2002 - Reminder

Hello All,

Jim Florence is leading a Crown King from Lake Pleasant trail run on Saturday, August 17, 2002.

When: Many trip wiil be scheduled
Where: Meet at the end of Castle Hot springs road where it changes to dirt.
Rating: 3.0-
Length: All day
CB Channel: 4

This is the AZVCJ annual anniversary run to Crown King come join the fun. Last year we had about 100 Jeeps go on the trip. I will set things up with Crown King so they are prepared.

Anthony Celaya will be doing Lunch "The final decision for lunch is: (WARM) BBQ beef sandwich , coleslaw, pasta and soda for the price of $5.50. The half price for the collection is now $2.75, the remaining $2.75 will be collected at the register of the Switchback when we eat. Anthony made a mistake by saying the price was $5.00, and I'm sorry for the change, but I promise the $5.50 price will be the set price. so for those who want to participate in this lunch that Camille is putting together for us, all she's asking is for half of the cost per plate, per person so she could begin preparing and getting supplies. Anthony will be taking the collection to Crown King on the 11th of August but will start collecting on the 9th and 10th.
on the 9th, Anthony will be at the chilies parking lot on the s/e corner of Mill and University from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m..
on the 10th, He will also be on the s/w corner of Thomas and 75th Ave behind Olive Garden (Desert Sky Mall area) at 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m..
if you would like to mail it to Anthony Celaya, his address is on the VJC website under members (be sure to write your name and your guest name so Anthony can put you on the list). if you have any questions, feel free to contact Anthony at 602-438-0468. TIA
.

We need several more trip leaders at different times. I need everyone to sign up on this page so we have a count. Each trip leader should post the trip and the time they plan on running it please sign up on this page and the trip leaders page you plan on making. Thanks Hackle.

PLEASE have your State Recreation Permit. I know there are a large number
of AZVJC that already have permits but with the Land Dept "bending to your
requests to reopen STL's early......... please respect that by "wheel'n
legally".

Sandee has State Rec Permits (east valley)
4-Wheeler Supply on 35th street &; Washington
Driven Auto Parts on 35th Avenue, south of Van Buren
State Land Dept. at 1616 W. Adams
Public Lands Information Center at 222 N. Central, Phx

$15.00 per year for an individual (cannot be transfered and is for purchaser
ONLY)
$20.00 per year for a family (IMMEDIATE FAMILY ONLY..... purchaser, spouse &;
minor children)
This allows acces to 9.8 million acres of State Trust Land in
Arizona........ make that 9.7....... there are a few small pieces of STL
closed due to urban sprawl and/or EPA directives.

Pry the plastic cover (with the shift pattern on it) off and underneath you
will find a bolt.

Hi Gang,

Tom LaFrance, one of our members and a licensed Concealed Carry Instructor will be teaching a concealed carry class at my home on August 24th and 25th.
The class will be 8 hours on Saturday and 8 hours on Sunday. If you are interested in taking the class, the cost is $90.
Joyce (my wife) is taking the class and I figured that since I already have a classroom in my house (for SCUBA) that we might as well hold the class at my house.
We have 3 slots left... if you are interested, please email me OFF LIST.

Subject: [TR] Trip Report - Woodpecker (Upper) - Saturday, August 10, 2002

Hello All,

steve sample lead a trail run Saturday, August 10, 2002 across Woodpecker (Upper)

ok- it was HOT so that's my excuse for the lack of names on the report, although the little ****er spaniel belonging to larry- that's BUTTERSCOTCH! one cool wheelin dog.

we all hooked up and hit woodpecker. i got wedged in the first obstacle and had to hi-lift out. what a way to start out. thanks to all for the help- good teamwork. only two of us attempted and beat the firehole- larry greene and jeff franz. good job guys and good spotting by others. we hit all the other tough spots with little or none of the easier bypasses. everyone was "in-tune". there were no breakdowns. good driving and equiptment.

there were about 8 of us started out and 2 CJ's hooked up at the beginning of woodpecker. they both made it.

did i mention it was HOT? we bailed after woodpecker. all but scott grigsby and eddie nordstrom called it a day. they headed for more wheelin- something about axle alley.......

did you guys make it out ok?

another fine run of ROCK CRAWLIN
