Just read this today on the AZVJC Yahoo groups:
I had my jeep stolen, they did not get far as the kill switch confused them...but they did destroy the door and the steering column as well as the ignition...$ 1100.00, worth of stuff...my jeep was the second one stolen from the area, last weekend... so watch out!..I was at the Costco, 99th and McDowell, in Avondale...seems they are targeting jeeps...again sorry but, thought you could pass this on
John Jamison

I talked to one of our Goodyear cops a couple of weeks ago and in Goodyear between Dysart and Estrella parkway along McDowell many jeeps have been stolen recently

Does anyone know for sure if that sentry key system really keeps thieves from being able to start your vehicle?

When I bought my Jeep it has some little key that I can take out and it won't start. I do take it out when I go to the mall or any other larger shopping area or just any place I do not trust. Now how well it works not sure and I hope I don't find out.
I know in my nieborhood there has been a two Jeeps broken into and one of those were set on fire. Both were open and parked in the street, happened about 3 to 4 months ago. I thought my area was nice but I guess I was wrong. I live just south of the Surprise Baseball Fields.

I'd be content if someone stole my jeep. I have gap and I owe too much.

The police need to secure that area with INCREASED PRESENCE and set out BAIT CARS and they need to do it RIGHT NOW! They have a specific area nailed down so there is NO EXCUSE. The city needs to start making available all that video from their 100's of TRAFFIC CAMERAS which I'm sure have captured images of any stolen vehicles. Car theft is OUT OF CONTROL and it seems like nothing is being done to stop it! Why have our community leaders failed to act on this? It has been a serious problem for YEARS now. I'm starting to think maybe they WANT our cars to be stolen. What other possible reason could there be for such disregard on this issue?

I personally have an alarm with an engine cutoff feature. I try not to leave anything in the Jeep I'm not willing to lose, and I expect very little concern or help from authorities if I do become a victim to this crime (again).

Definately shouldn't leave it in there. It would suck if the Jeep got stolen, but you would feel horrible if YOUR gun was used in a violent crime.

I am lucky, no one would WANT to steal my Jeep. And it sleeps in the garage all week.

yeah seriously, if someone were to commit a violent crime with your gun, you'd be in a lot more **** than just not having a vehicle anymore.

Not really, once the police report is made and you give officers the serial number you are off the hook. Except of course with yourself. I beat myself up for months after leaving all my goods (including my Glock 30) in my truck because I planned to go back out and detail out the truck. Had dinner, drank beer, and fell asleep. Next morning came out to the driveway and one wide open truck door.

All I could think about was some low life thief graduating to homicide using my gun. Felt like a total :knob:

On that note, take your damn gun out of your Jeep Dustin.

My Jeep is garaged at all times. I won't even park it at a mall or large parking area without pulling the coil wire out and taking it with me. Oh crap, I have to go to Arrowhead Mall tonight and pick something up. Thanks for the reminder.

I kick myself in the butt if I hesitate to put on (at least) the column lock collar
in addition to the club (every layer helps people, even if it only looks like a deterent), and set the alarm. All I have to do is think back to the chevy truck I spent so many hours fixing up, and modifying, and putting nice new wheels and tires on, a mere week before it got stolen, stripped, and burned to the ground. And then I think back to the replacement for it, that nearly got taken too, if not for the hidden kill switch I'd installed... they only got to destroy the steering column, and crank it, before stealing everything in the cab having failed to drive it away.

car thieves are alive and well people... don't let your guard down, or yours might be next. a kill switch can work wonders to keep your rig where it's at, even if they manage to steal everything else.

I hear they don't even have to crack open the columns, that many thieves are using jiggle keys now.

Last night... while Walt and I were watching TV one of the alarms
went off...

Thought it was my jeep as the alarm is very sensetive on her...

nope...

it was Christine... the 2000 Chevy Blazer 4x4 that I own... that is
strange for her alarm to go off... its not sensetive at all...

Walt and I checked around the truck and did not find anything wrong
but I saw someone walking across the street less than a block away.
Told Walt that was to coincidental... her alarm going off then see some
one walking across the street faster than normal...

So I hopped into Christine and followed... the kid knew I was behind him,
made damn sure he knew... he walked up to a house and started to wipe
his feet.. like he was going in...

Someone came up behind me so i had to move... as I didnt have my
drivers license or any ID on me... I went down the street, turned
around and came back to the house... he was gone...

I thought he went into the house until I went back by it today and
saw the house was vacant...

The little bastard was messing around with my truck... but he didnt
get a damn thing but her alarm to go off and me to follow his butt...

Its in our neighborhood also... Walts jeep and My Green Jeep have
well... Walts jeep has a brake lock on it plus an alarm and My Green
Jeep has a clutch lock on it with an alarm... Christine only has an alarm
on her...

Ok... you are probably wondering why the truck is called Christine...

Thats another story... :whistling:

Mine has the alarm, a really loud alarm with a hood lock, ignition kill, sentery key, and Wayco kill switch in a nice lockable area.

The Jeep isn't going anywhere unless it is drug onto a flat bed...

My new neighbors have a jeep liberty. It's obviously not a 4.0, but it sounds very similar on startup. They are in and out all hours of the night, and it's always freaking me out. It sounds like someone is taking off with my Jeep.

I wish mine would fit in the garage. I use an auto lock that locks the clutch or brake pedal to the floor. They have a cutout it won't start unless depressed and can't be driven (unless you take the fuse out that overrides). You can see it so it is a deterrent and it made of high strength steel and drill proof lock. They even have a warranty. 65 bucks

I have been looking for one of those for a while. Where did you get yours, what brand is it, how much, etc?

I'm sure other folks could benefit from this information as well. Maybe we should have a "Security" sticky post so information like this is readily available to all the members and viewers.

To answer your question about the column lock:

I purchased mine at PepBoys, where they usually stock them, but usually only one at a time. The maker is American Automotive Accessories (catchy name eh?). I don't recall it costing more than $70 or so. It fits GM type tilt-columns used in a whole bunch of different makes and models including, but not limited to, 91 XJs. I can also tell you that it uses a special four-way type key that comes with it, that makes defeating it a little more difficult, but as with all things, not impossible if someone has all day.

as you can see from the pics, it covers most of the critical stuff on the column, including the lock cylinder itself, and it's painted bright red so the thieves can see it without difficulty... and hopefully pass your vehicle by for an easier target.

On my CJ nobody is driving off... You could hot wire that thing ridiculously easy but I have a few things up my sleeves.

First, the new cover had a cable lock, not hard to deal with but they'd have to cut it off the cover. Second, there's a big huge U-lock that hooks my steering wheel to the cage. It's not drivable like that. Last, I yank the rotor out of my distributor. The jeep will turn over and crank but without that rotor it will never fire. It takes just a few minutes to pull the rotor but since I don't drive the CJ that much it's really worth it.
