Stu,
This was the reply to your email.... I told them I would forward it to you.
Apparently you missed my second message where I apologized for my perhaps poorly written sarcasm. I certainly was not blaming the ATV community for the damage either. I was only trying to show how the few can ruin it for the many, regardless of the activity. I agree that finger pointing and name calling will get us nowhere. Therefore I will not over react to your rather pointed email at me. We all must take responsibity for ourselves, as well as for those who act with disregard to laws and respect of public lands. I always try to leave an area as clean or better than when I arrived, whether hiking, 4x4ing, biking, backpacking, whatever. I apologize again for any offense caused. Please have the decency to forward this to your list serve as well.

While I think I understand what Jean (roadrunners?) may be trying to say, she does, IMHO, need to be careful about how she states her complaint.
While I am certainly an off-road enthusiast, I am not a geocacher. As such, if people are driving quads and 4x4s to geoache locations and causing problems, then it is the geocachers that are doing it….not the off-road enthusiast. (DUH!)
Now…the above statement is about as stupid as the one that Jean (roadrunners?) wrote, IMO. She is, in my opinion, a dangerous element when it comes to these types of discussions. Finger pointing is NOT the way to solve the problem. Off-road enthusiasts AND geocachers BOTH depend on public access to public land. Without it, we are both without a place to recreate (unless you want to geocache or ramp ricers in the city).
So….my advice to dear Jean (roadrunners?) would be to chill out a bit and stop trying to alienate those that may very well be her best ally in this fight to keep our public lands open and accessible.
Yes….both off-road enthusiasts and geocachers share a common element….the moron that drives around on public land with complete disregard for the land or the laws…..and as she said…the ones that toss fast food wrappers out the window on I-17 (at least she got one thing correct). Once Jean (roadrunners?) figures that out, she will, IMO, not come off as the finger-pointing idiot she appears to be now.
She has yet to figure out that what she is doing is exactly what the greenie folks want….divide the opposition into small in-fighting fractured segments and then pick them off, one at a time. As the old saying goes, “United we stand, divided we fall”. I wish someone would explain this to Jean (roadrunners?) before she helps us all to death.
Timber Chucker!
p.s. Kyle, if you want to filter this back towards the source of your original post, please feel free to do so. It will take a ton of talking to convince me that I am wrong on this subject.

I thought the list might be interested in what some of the people on AzGeocaching.com is responding about this article:
Perhaps the article should have been written about ATVs and 4x4s. We have noticed that there is a definite correlation in the amount of trash and the vehicle access. When you are in areas where you must travel by foot, there is a very small amount of trash. But when you are in areas where vehicles can go, there are always bud light cans by the case and a bunch of other crap one can only wonder why someone took the trouble to haul it way out there, unless it was to use it for target practice and leave it behind. We say TRASHY PEOPLE HAVE TRASHY WAYS. These are the same idiots who throw fast food wrappers out the window on I-17 thinking "someone" else will pick it up. I offer the following rewrite of the article:
An off road vehicle rampage has caused a panic among authorites who say the offroaders are destroying archaelogical sites around the state. Using jeeps and ATVs the slobs can literally drive right to more than 600 sites throughout arizona and vandalize artifacts and throw trash out the window....

Hello All,
Dave Murray is leading a Raw Deal (Lower) trail run on Friday, August 9, 2002.
When: 7:00
Where: Meet at Table Mesa Frontage Road, (little dirt parking lot 1/2 mile down the frontage road)
Rating: 3.5+
Length: few hours if we do other trails
CB Channel: 7
I would like to do Raw Deal and maybe Upper if anyones up to it. If we get done early with no breakdowns, we can run another trail if someones familar with trailheads. I can;t quite remember where terminator is.
Raw Deal is a short trail (1.2 miles) that begins and ends in a wash. It offers a little bit of something for everybody. Many of the obstacles can be taken with varying degrees of difficulty, and a couple can be bypassed. As is the case with many AZ trails, it is best if accompanied by someone who has ran the trail before. There are a few spots were a good spotter will be appreciated. The are several bedrock "cracks" to negotiate, as well as a few rock ledges, varying sized boulders, etc.
Remember to bring your camera and Water.
Enjoy and remember to TREAD Lightly!

Stu (and all);
I've been an inactive member of the AZVJC for the past couple years. I still
lurk on the list, as I constantly learn from you. I know - it's been awhile
since I've been on a trail run. Mainly, because I got VERY involved in
Geocaching.
First, I (and all geocachers) greatly appreciate the support you've shown
and your responses to the AZ Republic. Many of us geocacher's are also avid
and responsible 4-wheelers. So we do have much in common. Am I a Jeeper or a
Geocacher? I'm both.
Second, please don't take Jean's (roadrunners) message to strongly. She's
only one person who dislikes any ATV or 4-wheeler who disrespects the land,
as do many of us Jeepers. Many people on the geocache Email list have
expressed to Jean their dislike for her Email, and she's apologized to the
geocache list. I understand her intent wasn't to slam all ATV and
4-wheelers, but specifically those few giving us all a bad name.
Thanks again for your continued support of geocaching, as it's in both of
our best interests. I'm sure I'll see you on the trails again soon (as long
as Joey's not leading).

According to a few sites I looked at, the lift springs are the same
part numbers. So I am guessing the stock springs are the same part
number. The search I did considered both to be 4x4's. I would also
guess that they would need to have the same size engine, but I am not
sure that this really matters.

Jeremy,
Sound like your castor is off. Do you have adjustable control arms? With
adjustable control arms you can adjust the angle of your front castor. I
believe it is the upper control arms that you want. Although having both
upper and lowers is best.
If you are unsure what castor is, think of a shopping cart's front
wheels. A proper castor angle is what keeps the wheels pointing in the
right direction.
With 4" of lift this is a common problem.

It's:

Red
-Brand new Supertop...got it two years ago, rarely used, I'm a big fan of just the bikini top.
-New Bikini top
-Windjammer/torneau
-Rearstorage, rear seat removed but still have for ya'
-Herculined
-front/rear tow hooks
-Tuffy padded lockable consol, bout 8 mos old, black
-alpine disc
-wet okole covers
-3.5 superlift
-1/4" rockers

-no sway, trac bars
-grill guard
-120w fog light and rear fog
-cb/ant.
-Hi lift
-brandnew mopar windshield, courtesy of a glass co. mistake.
-I will include just about all of the recover/trail equipment as I won't need it anymore.
This jeep was my daily driver and when it was off road it was primarily to camp and explore old ghosttowns, mines and the such. It hasn't been beaten but is a proven, reliable trail jeep.
The body has no dings except for a small one on the hood(not really noticable) although it does have az pin striping but that does wax out if your up to the task of waxing.
I can't foresee this needing anything at all. Everything is very tight. No leaks of any sort. Oil and proactive main't done routinely and have all receipts and documents to boot. Eventhough I changed the oil and did most of the work myself or with DesertFab, I have annotated and kept receipts.
This is a vehicle I'd hate to trade in as it won't get the appreciation or respect it deserves but different times dictate the need for a more family oriented vehicle. I can provide a detailed list of the repairs/replacements/tune ups etc it has had over the life of my ownership. I would not sell it if there was a way i could keep it.
Please pass this along to anyone you know that may need a good looking, reliable, sound jeep.
Thanks Michael

run them, the brakes necessary to stop them, and all the other mods that are
interrelated...you are building an off-road machine, not a compromise

Stu,
This was the reply to your email....

Stu (and all);
I've been an inactive member of the AZVJC for the past couple years. I still
lurk on the list, as I constantly learn from you.

Does anyone know of a web site that lets you cross reference parts and parts numbers? My son broke a coil spring on his 88 XJ, I still have the original coils from my 95 XJ but need to know if they will fit. Checked autozone.com and a couple others and they don't list any part numbers for coil springs.

According to a few sites I looked at, the lift springs are the same
part numbers. So I am guessing the stock springs are the same part
number. The search I did considered both to be 4x4's. I would also
guess that they would need to have the same size engine, but I am not
sure that this really matters.

there was no washer, between the hub and the nut. I am guessing the lack of
this washer allowed the nut to tighten up. The funny thing is the rotor

I tried wedging something between the nut and the outside of the hub and

Jeremy,
Sound like your castor is off.

It's:
1992 yj 4.o
Red
-Brand new Supertop...got it two years ago, rarely used, I'm a big fan of just the bikini top.
-New Bikini top
-Windjammer/torneau
-Rearstorage, rear seat removed but still have for ya'
-Herculined
-front/rear tow hooks
-Tuffy padded lockable consol, bout 8 mos old, black
-alpine disc
-wet okole covers
-3.5 superlift
-1/4" rockers
-bfg at kos
-k&n; if you like
-no sway, trac bars

I guess I have a hard time thinking of 35"s as a "compromise". IMO, when
you go to 35 and the lifts necessary to clear them, the gears necessary to
run them, the brakes necessary to stop them, and all the other mods that are
interrelated...you are building an off-road machine, not a compromise
machine.
Anyway, I'm curious to hear what he decides.

Stu,
You are dead on! I agreee with your comments 110%.
