I don't wheel that much. I noticed that the bars to the windshield
frame as starting to develop a crack. I would like to get a cage for
a small price. Being 17, I am on a very limited budget but will like
to get something to replace them.

I'll have to back Stu's comments with regard to Dick's driveshaft. After installing my SYE in January, I went to them for a new shaft. The vibration with the first shaft that they built for me was intolerable at 45 mph. After complaining and taking it back, they were more than happy to build another from scratch. Now I could accelerate to a whopping 55 mph...on to the third driveshaft...this one is even worse than the first! Three strikes, Dick's is out. Dick's was more than happy to try and help, but they never could fix the problem for whatever reason.

The FIRST driveshaft from Tom Wood's works beautifully, no other changes.

Chris,

I suppose it could have been a bad day….things do go wrong and things can get broken….but that is no excuse. IMO, the difference between Dicks and a good shop is that the good shop admits they made the mistake and corrects it. As I said before….there is no reason I have to quality check THEIR work. I paid them $100 for the work. Maybe I missed the sign that said I could pay $200 and have it done correctly.

Have you taken your u-joints apart and checked them? From my experience, that is the ONLY way you will be able to determine that they did a “top notch job”. As the old saying goes….”Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.”

Maybe they were just having a bad day. I just had the length on both my driveshafts changed and they did a top notch job. They even installed a couple free u-joints.

Some of you may remember that I posted my disappointment with Dick¹s Driveshaft shop back around the Easter time frame. I had dented my front driveshaft and took it to them for a balance job. They re-tubed it because they claimed it would not balance.

I posted that I was unhappy with their work as I got it back with needle bearings missing from the front axle end u-joint. Details/pics at:

http://www.stu-offroad.com/misc/shaft-1.htm

On my last FJ run, I noticed that my front drive shaft was squeaking again (TJ owners know all to well about this problem). I was surprised to notice it since I had just tore it down and did a complete grease job on the CV u-joints this past October. Given that much of our summer was spent NOT wheelin¹, and with only one trip to Moab since October, I really haven¹t rolled up that much mileage.

So, yesterday morning, I dropped the front drive shaft and took the u-joints out to grease them (again).

As I was taking things apart, I kept thinking that something was not right. I took at look at the pics on my web site (from the October write-up) and quickly realized what was wrong.

The centering ball in the CV joint lightly rides in a large round ³cup², so to speak, that helps keep it free from dust and moisture (a dust boot if you would). You can see it here, http://www.stu-offroad.com/misc/images/ds-13.jpg

Well, guess what is missing from my front drive shaft? I suppose it is possible that it may have ³fallen² off since I had the work done this past Easter. But .I really doubt it. I feel quite confident that Dick¹s Driveshaft shop left it off (or broke it off?) when they did the work. It was obvious that they had taken the CV u-joints apart as there were two end caps with missing needle bearings in them (just like the problem with the axle end u-joint). There were NO missing needle bearings when I assembled them last October.

No .I did not go down there to talk to them about this. If I did, someone would have to be springing for my bond and that would not be cool. They are not worth the trouble.

IMHO, this shop puts out some poor quality work at the best. You can certainly spend your money there if you wish, but I¹ll not pay them another $100 to screw up a drive shaft. Yes, it is only one data point that I am offering as proof. But there is NO reason that anyone should have to completely tear down a CV drive shaft to check needle bearings, etc. after they get it home. Since they can not be trusted, you would be a fool for not QAing the work yourself, true? They have already proven that to you.

Just thought I would share my recent discovery. I¹ll be looking for a new shop in a bit since I don¹t expect this drive shaft to last very long. With nothing protecting the centering ball from dirt and moisture, I don¹t think it will last too much longer.

Steve Sample mentioned that they got stopped by the sheriff when they were up at Florence Junction area for not having State Land Use Permits. When I picked mine up here in Tucson they said they were very strict in that area about the permits.
You can get one at the State Land Office here in Tucson at:
233 N Main Ave (just north of down town) Phone #628-5480. The office is in one of the houses on the west side of Main.
The cost is $20 for a family and a little less for a single.
I think that your hunting license is also good for access to State Land.

My YJ is white so basically I am looking for a set of white full hard doors, with or w/out mirrors, or a set of uppers for my white half doors. I don't really want to sell them if I don't have to. Also I have a 97' Nissan P/u with a 3" body and a 3" suspension lift with 30" tires, eagle alloy rims, the truck is in very good condition, I've never had any problems with it just got the jeep so don't need p/u anymore. Group permits a for a per event charge only. Meaning good for the day
or time period they were purchased. This will not help our group. I
feel that it is the indiviudals responsibility to get a permit it is
only 15-20$ for a year. I spend that filling up my gas tank three
times a week. Please get your permits. It makes Law Enforcement llok

Ive already had other e-mail sent to me (off the list) that expressed the same type of problem I had, so obviously I am not the only one who has experienced this. I read one here on the list, about 45 minutes ago, where the guy tried three times to get a good driveshaft from them.

I am glad you have good luck with them, I really am. Maybe a peson has to be someone in the off-road community to get a quality shaft from them. I know I am not such a person and I certainly dont run a competition rig.

Can't seem to add my name to the list. I plan on going at 7:30 W/ Pat
Dick
as the Trip Leader. Is there a limit on the amount of vehicles going at
a
specific time... Or is it alright to just show up....

Subject: YJ Roll Cage , rock guards by Hunter-Offroad

Hunter_Offroad built my roll cage. Pictures are located under
Roy95YJ in the photos file. John did a good job, I replaced my OEM
cage, the new cage is bolted to the floor and wheelwell, the rock
guard was also built by John, they are welded to the frame.
A few rattle can of paint, and I'm good to go....
now to start saving up for a new driveline and lockers.

Once again, thanks John.

Subject: Closed BLM Land being abused by OHVs

Hi All:

I have a few friends that live near the Agua Fria Riverbed on Camelback. Every afternoon/evening I've driven by I've seen people down there riding.

About 6-8 weeks ago signs were put up stating "BLM LAND, Closed, no OHVs, etc." Now some bright idiots decided to paint over them in the same brown color so they could say the didn't know.

I don't want "us" to look bad, but I feel obligated to call it in and see they get fined. The concrete barriers still say no trespassing etc on them and it really burns me up seeing people are abusing a closed area. Yes it's one area, but BLM or STL Personnel will look at this area and use it against us when they decide to close an area, such as at Land Use Meetings, etc. I know I haven't been to any meetings, but what could we do to stop these people from going in there? Regardless I know some idiots will be cute and continue to go in there because we all know rules were made to be broken. I feel they should suffer the consequences.

Back in Upstate NY where I'm from there are NO OHV areas in the area I grew up in. You'd have to drive 3-5 hours in order to drive to an area to ride a quad, and longer to go Jeeping. Back home if your caught on private land or closed area and your caught, they confiscate your snowmobile or quad on the spot. Yes, I was young and dumb, I'll admit my gf and I never got caught. But it's not hard to outrun a squad car on a trail wide enough for a quad. My point is I don't want these closed areas being abused to affect the ones that still are open.

Flame Away, I have thick skin!

Jake
