How about this... We identify which trails on the club website cross STL
or you need to cross STL to get to the trail. Then we update the website
description to include the requirement.
I think this would dramatically increase the quality of our trail
listings. Plus it would possibly increase the respect from the STLD.

This topic comes up a lot on this list. I don't feel it's the
responsibility of the trip leader to check for permits. I know that my
closest friends and I all carry valid permits. I will recommend that any
newbies I meet get a STL permit. But for most people I leave it up to
them. It's not my job to enforce these rules.

Jose,

IMO, anyone that wheels in Arizona needs to have a STL permit. It is a
no-brainer decision to get one. Call 602-542-4631 (Phoenix) or
520-628-5480 (Tucson) or 520-774-1425 (Flagstaff) and have an
application sent to your house. Most folks (including me half of the
time) don't know if they are on or off STL when running a trail.
However...we all know that many of our favorite trails are on or cut
across STL. Not having one is silly, given the $20 cost for a family
permit. Mine expires in approximately two weeks and my renewal is in
the mail, as I type.

to check the expiration date, etc. - Jose

These puppies are not up for sale yet as they are still weening, but
will be going up soon (1st week of Sept). I am just wandering if
anybody in the club would like a first chance of getting one or two.
I don't know much about the puppies as they are my mothers, but they
are very cute. There are 6 Golden and 3 Black Labs for sale, all
puppies are Pure Bread and Papered, AKC Registered both Male and
Female on site, do not know how many of each.
The asking price is between $375.00 and $450.00 each Very Negotiable.

If you are Seriously interested send me an e-mail off list at
larry@d...

I do think that they will reserve puppies for those interested.

The puppies are located in Central Tucson Az.

This all depends on what type of rim you have. The
backspacing is very important. Base on the research I

about the best. 4wheelers supply will also recommend
4" backspacing.

Joey,

If the purpose of what you suggest is for general education about our
trails, then I think that is a good idea. If the purpose is to allow
people without permits to avoid trails that require permits, then I
think I disagree with that.

Maybe people don't realize this but most of the major trail areas around
Phoenix Table Mesa, Forence Junction, Lake Pleasant, White Tanks, etc.
(can't speak for the other areas in the state) include STL. Sooner or
later most wheelers will need a STL permit. Therefore, it makes sense
to me that everyone should just go get one. Besides, I certainly wouldn't
trust our website to tell me if I needed a permit. Why take the risk when
it's so easy to just get the permit and be covered?

However, I think it would be good for more of us to know what land(s) our
trails are on. In fact, it would be highly appropriate. A good general
awareness of this would make us more intelligent at land use meetings and
in other situations where showing our intelligence would benefit us (which
is all of the time).

Good points Roger. In retrospect it is probably a good idea that the web
site not indicate what is STL or not. That way someone would not be able
to say "but my club said it wasn't STL land".

Maybe all the trails should just say something like "You may cross STL
either accessing the trail or on the trail. Check with current maps. If
it does you are required to carry a STL permit for every non family
member or for you immediate family." Or something like that.

Just a thought.

What does everyone else think?

If you ever get the chance to go out there, take it. I took a road
trip out that way a couple of winters back. Man, is that a beautiful
area. I hiked back into the canyon after driving into a 'parking
area'. It's pretty incredible, but I wouldn't even attempt to drive
it. 4.5 miles of narrow and steep, big rocks, at least a 10'
waterfall, and lots of water. Too crazy for me. There is a ghost
town on the way in, Ballarat, thats being kept up and at the top is
Pinamint City, first a bandit hideout in 1873 and then an off and on
mining camp up 'til 1984 when the road was completely washed out.

Pretty cool place. Personally, I think that it should stay the way
it was with a local club organizing a trip once a year under the NPS
guidance. Keep the yahoos who aren't prepared out and keep the place
clean. Probably not a popular opinion but it's mine.

Date: Mon Aug 5, 2002 6:12pm
Subject: The Difference between HREW and DOM tubing

HREW tubing is Hot Rolled Electronically Welded. It starts out as a
flat sheet of mild steel, and is pulled, pushed, or rolled through a
die that forms it into a tube. It is then run across a metal wheel
that fuses (welds) the seam together. This is where the seam on the
inside of the tube comes from. It is usually made from 1018 steel,
although if the customer does not specify, the vendor (where you buy
the tubing from) may substitute 1020 mild steel, which is a little
better grade than 1018. It is just a different alloy steel.

DOM is Drawn Over Mandrel. It is made the same way as the HREW, where
it is formed from a flat sheet, except that after it is welded, it is
forced through a sizing die. The sizing die does several things to
the tube. First, it "irons out" the seam in the tube, making the tube
virtually seamless. It "cold forges" the seam into the tube, adding
some additional strength. It also makes the thickness of the walls of
the tube more consistent, and makes the tube more round. By making
the tube out of 1026 alloy steel, DOM is stronger than the HREW.

Steel is steel, and there is no difference in weight for the same
size and wall thickness of tube. It is (mostly) all in the alloy of
steel used to make the tube. This is true even for chrome moly steel.
Given the same outside diameter and wall thickness, Chrome moly steel
will weigh the same as mild steel of the same size. Chrome moly has a
yield strength of 80,000 PSI, because of its chromium alloy content.
People sometimes get confused and say chrome moly steel is lighter,
but it is not the case. Because it is so much stronger than 1018 or
1020 mild steel, you can use a thinner wall or smaller diameter
tubing of chrome moly steel and not sacrifice any strength when
compared to the mild steel tubing.

Price: Varies

Contact: cj8rockcrawler@cox.net

I'm selling several items that I don't need after my buildup on my 84 CJ8.

Stock Front Bumper... surface rust but solid. $50

Full Hard Doors... Blue, good shape. Still has used sale tag on them for $495. Asking $400

Hard Scrambler Half Cab... Grey, good shape. Asking $350

Stock Dana 300 gears... Make offer

Under hood wiring harness for lights... Make offer

YJ Mirrors... Black, great shape $40

CJ Front Flares... good shape $30/pair

YJ Rear Flares... great shape $30/pair

15 x 8 Aluminum American Racing Rims. 5 on 5.5 bolt pattern w/ 4 inches of backspacing. I'm not sure on the model number, but can provide pictures upon request... Excellent shape... $200/4 rims

Stock 3 point harness w/ recoils... missing female ends, but should work with stock lap belt buckles... $50/pair

Stock AMC 20 and Dana 30 carriers for 2.73 gears w/ gears. AMC 20 w/ track loc.... Make offer

Tow Bar pieces for ZJ, XJ and 1st Gen S10... These are NOT tow bars, but they are brackets that attach to the frame and stick out in front of the bumper to mount a tow bar to. I am keeping the towbar to use on my CJ, but am selling the brackets that I purchased to use the bar w/ the above vehicles.

You can use Norton Ghost... Did you set the 30 gig to master drive, and the new 60 gig to slave? Did you add the new hard drive to the bios?

E-Mail me if you need more help, nickg@4x4jeep.net

Hi Scott

I don't know if it's running or not, haven't fired it up sense I got home. Did pick up a 60gig drive to replace it with. How do you go about "ghosting" it over? I only have the one display so I can't run them both at once.

Thanks
Keith

Hi do you have any pics or a web page of your scrambler? I am
thinking of a scrambler build up & would like to see some finished
products. Are the YJ mirrors off of 1/2 doors? if so I am interested.
thanks
John
