Allan,
Save your money and have John at Hunter Offroad build a real roll cage for you (assuming that you are really going to use your Jeep offroad). If you want something that makes your Jeep look tougher go ahead and get the OR or Toys by Troy cage& if you want a cage which you can bet your life on; go talk to John at Hunter Offroad.

Hi Allan, As to the durability of the "cages" I think that they will take better care of you than the stock "cage". But if I had it all to do over again I would save my money and have John @ Hunter Off Road build a cage and reinforce the existing bar for a more complete system. Go talk to John (after he gets back from vacation on 8-20) and I think that you will see that you can aford to have a custom cage done for a very reasonable price.

Allan,
I have the same style of roll cage in my YJ. It was built by O-R Fab although
it is completely welded - not bolted as the kits are. Joe West has always
preached getting a "real" cage over the bolt-in kits because he claims you
can have John at Hunter Offroad build one for about the same cost - which
is evidently true.
My opinion is that Joe is correct with respect to the strength of a welded
cage vs. a bolt-in cage. That's why mine is completely welded. Joe also
prefers a cage that attaches to the floor (in the front) instead of to the dash.
While I agree that extending the cage to the floor is a bit stronger, there are
also other tradeoffs to consider. I decided I didn't want the tube in the way
of getting in and out of my Jeep because my Jeep is a daily driver and I am
6' 4" tall. I also didn't want my parking brake peddle and release handle
blocked because I use them daily too.
One final note. There was a gal who recently rolled her TJ in Moab.
The roll was a fairly nasty one - multiple rolls down a solid rock ravine.
(There was a video clip of this floating around on the Internet.) Her TJ
had the Toys By Troy cage in it and it held up reasonably well. Last I
heard, that Jeep was over at Troy's so you could probably stop by
there to see it.

My YJ has had a cage without a windshield support for 3-4 years now, I
haven't had any trouble with it wobbling or flopping up to my max speed of
about 80-85 MPH. My CJ5's full cage didn't have any windshield support
either, and it was rock solid up to its max speed of about 60-65MPH. FWIW.

You can get one at the State Land Office here in Tucson at:

The cost is $20 for a family and a little less for a single.

i just spoke with Carol an the state trust land office and she said everyone has to have their own permit unless you purchased a family permit(immediate family only)for 20$ .single person is 15$.main reason why i called is because i also have a hunt/fish combo license and wondered if this was adequate to gain legal access to STL.she said that as long as i was on state trust land for the sole purpose of hunting or fishing it was ok.i then asked her if it was ok to enter STL to scout for possible hunting and fishing locationsand she said that was ok as long as what i was scoutting for was in season.you may or may not get away with this depending on the person who will be checking your hunting license and determining if you are doing what it permits or not. my feeling is get the STL rec permit and be on the safe side, don't go out off roading with a hunting license thinking your in the clear and legal because your probably not.

months as for creating an image for the 4 wheeling enthusiasts'. I believe
that this group has a LOT to do with the decisions that are made as far as
what land stay open for ohv use. Most of our Sr. members are to be thanked
for all of the huge turn outs at BLM and state land use meetings... We do

Chris,
I suppose it could have been a bad day….things do go wrong and things can
get broken….but that is no excuse. IMO, the difference between Dicks and a
good shop is that the good shop admits they made the mistake and corrects
it. As I said before….there is no reason I have to quality check THEIR
work. I paid them $100 for the work. Maybe I missed the sign that said I
could pay $200 and have it done correctly.
Have you taken your u-joints apart and checked them? From my experience,
that is the ONLY way you will be able to determine that they did a “top
notch job”. As the old saying goes….”Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me
twice, shame on me.”

driveshafts changed and they did a top notch job. They even installed a
couple free u-joints.

Subject: [az_vjc] update to poor drive shaft service
Some of you may remember that I posted my disappointment with Dick¹s
Driveshaft shop back around the Easter time frame. I had dented my front
driveshaft and took it to them for a balance job. They re-tubed it because
they claimed it would not balance.
I posted that I was unhappy with their work as I got it back with needle
bearings missing from the front axle end u-joint. Details/pics at:
http://www.stu-offroad.com/misc/shaft-1.htm
On my last FJ run, I noticed that my front drive shaft was squeaking again
(TJ owners know all to well about this problem). I was surprised to notice
it since I had just tore it down and did a complete grease job on the CV
u-joints this past October. Given that much of our summer was spent NOT
wheelin¹, and with only one trip to Moab since October, I really haven¹t
rolled up that much mileage.
So, yesterday morning, I dropped the front drive shaft and took the u-joints
out to grease them (again).
As I was taking things apart, I kept thinking that something was not right.
I took at look at the pics on my web site (from the October write-up) and
quickly realized what was wrong.
The centering ball in the CV joint lightly rides in a large round ³cup², so
to speak, that helps keep it free from dust and moisture (a dust boot if you
would). You can see it here,
http://www.stu-offroad.com/misc/images/ds-13.jpg
Well, guess what is missing from my front drive shaft? I suppose it is
possible that it may have ³fallen² off since I had the work done this past
Easter. But .I really doubt it. I feel quite confident that Dick¹s
Driveshaft shop left it off (or broke it off?) when they did the work. It
was obvious that they had taken the CV u-joints apart as there were two end
caps with missing needle bearings in them (just like the problem with the
axle end u-joint). There were NO missing needle bearings when I assembled
them last October.
No .I did not go down there to talk to them about this. If I did, someone
would have to be springing for my bond and that would not be cool. They are
not worth the trouble.
IMHO, this shop puts out some poor quality work at the best. You can
certainly spend your money there if you wish, but I¹ll not pay them another
$100 to screw up a drive shaft. Yes, it is only one data point that I am
offering as proof. But there is NO reason that anyone should have to
completely tear down a CV drive shaft to check needle bearings, etc. after
they get it home. Since they can not be trusted, you would be a fool for
not QAing the work yourself, true? They have already proven that to you.
Just thought I would share my recent discovery. I¹ll be looking for a new
shop in a bit since I don¹t expect this drive shaft to last very long. With
nothing protecting the centering ball from dirt and moisture, I don¹t think
it will last too much longer.

Anyone have any shop reccomendations in the valley (preferably east)?
I plan on getting my AA SYE installed next week and will need a place
to get a new driveshaft.
Thanks -

David,
Just set your preferences to no e-mails. That way when you want to
see what's going on you just go to the yahoo groups site...... ever
since e-groups was dumped (thank god!) that's how I do it. No more e-
mail in the box. You don't have to leave.........

Having installed both of these cages (Troy and ORF) I will throw in my 2
cents. Both appear to be pretty equal in most aspects. But the one thing
I do not like about the one from Troy is that there is no bracket
bracing the windshield. The only thing keeping the windshiled from
flopping around is the bolt on each hinge. The top side is completely
free. The windshield wobbles around.

No offense intended here... But us younger audience would call this
topic of discussion gay... Lets move on. We have done so much good in
the past few months as for creating an image for the 4 wheeling
enthusiasts'. I believe that this group has a LOT to do with the
decisions that are made as far as what land stay open for ohv use. Most
of our Sr. members are to be thanked for all of the huge turn outs at
BLM and state land use meetings... We do to much good around to help
our community and fellow jeepers to let a little annoyance effect our
group like this... We need you old farts :o) lighten up people...Sounds
like this Friday's lunch needs to be at a bar. Cheers!

David,
So what? I'd like to see you stick around. This group wasn't any better
before you joined and certainly isn't any worse now. Maybe your
perception of it has changed? I haven't posted much lately because I've
been too busy with work and taking Cisco classes.
I think proper use of the delete key is the most effective way to deal
with some of the garbage.
Hoping you stick it out,

Allan,
Save your money and have John at Hunter Offroad build a real roll cage
for you (assuming that you are really going to use your Jeep offroad).
If you want something that makes your Jeep look "tougher" go ahead and
get the OR or Toys by Troy cage. if you want a cage which you can bet
your life on; go talk to John at Hunter Offroad.

I have Troy's cage installed on my Jeep (for close to 2 years), I have not
noticed the windshield wobbling around. I did use one of the straps and
strapped the windshield to the cage font cross bar using the center foorman

Hi Allan, As to the durability of the "cages" I think that they will take
better care of you than the stock "cage". But if I had it all to do over
again I would save my money and have John @ Hunter Off Road build a cage and
reinforce the existing bar for a more complete system. Go talk to John
(after he gets back from vacation on 8-20) and I think that you will see
that you can aford to have a custom cage done for a very reasonable price.

Subject: Re: ORFab Cage vs. Toys by Troy cage
Allan,
I have the same style of roll cage in my YJ. It was built by O-R Fab
although
it is completely welded - not bolted as the kits are.
Joe also
prefers a cage that attaches to the floor (in the front) instead of to the
dash.
While I agree that extending the cage to the floor is a bit stronger, there
are
also other tradeoffs to consider. I decided I didn't want the tube in the
way
of getting in and out of my Jeep because my Jeep is a daily driver and I am

233 N Main Ave (just north of down town) Phone #628-5480. The office is in
one of the houses on the west side of Main.
The cost is $20 for a family and a little less for a single.
I think that your hunting license is also good for access to State Land.

Hi,
I know of someone looking to buy an older jeep. He wants a
narrow axle, CJ-5, CJ-7 or older, just to bum around in, for hunting,
etc. Stock or mostly stock. Something from the 50's, 60's or 70's would
be okay. (1982 was the last year for the narrow axles.) He is willing
to pay up to $3500 maximum, depending on condition. He name is Steve

you know of any jeep like this for sale.

Exactly right, the hunting/fishing license grants you access to STL
for that explicit purpose (hunting/fishing); not running trails. If
you want to go four wheeling or camping then get the STL permit.
Family is exactly what it says... immediate family (spouse and

Allan,
Save your money and have John at Hunter Offroad build a real roll cage for you (assuming that you are really going to use your Jeep offroad).

My YJ has had a cage without a windshield support for 3-4 years now, I
haven't had any trouble with it wobbling or flopping up to my max speed of

either, and it was rock solid up to its max speed of about 60-65MPH. FWIW.

i just spoke with Carol an the state trust land office and she said everyone has to have their own permit unless you purchased a family permit(immediate family only)for 20$ .single person is 15$.main reason why i called is because i also have a hunt/fish combo license and wondered if this was adequate to gain legal access to STL.she said that as long as i was on state trust land for the sole purpose of hunting or fishing it was ok.i then asked her if it was ok to enter STL to scout for possible hunting and fishing locationsand she said that was ok as long as what i was scoutting for was in season.you may or may not get away with this depending on the person who will be checking your hunting license and determining if you are doing what it permits or not. my feeling is get the STL rec permit and be on the safe side, don't go out off roading with a hunting license thinking your in the clear and legal because your probably not.

No offense intended here... But us younger audience would call this topic of

months as for creating an image for the 4 wheeling enthusiasts'. I believe
that this group has a LOT to do with the decisions that are made as far as
what land stay open for ohv use. Most of our Sr. members are to be thanked
for all of the huge turn outs at BLM and state land use meetings... We do
to much good around to help our community and fellow jeepers to let a little
annoyance effect our group like this... We need you old farts :o) lighten up

Chris,
I suppose it could have been a bad day….things do go wrong and things can
get broken….but that is no excuse.

Maybe they were just having a bad day. I just had the length on both my
driveshafts changed and they did a top notch job.

David,
Just set your preferences to no e-mails. That way when you want to
see what's going on you just go to the yahoo groups site...... ever
since e-groups was dumped (thank god!) that's how I do it. No more e-
mail in the box. You don't have to leave.........

I do not like about the one from Troy is that there is no bracket
bracing the windshield. The only thing keeping the windshiled from
flopping around is the bolt on each hinge. The top side is completely
free. The windshield wobbles around.

It's interesting how the complaints usually waste more bandwidth than
the original messages did. It just goes to show that using the delete

Cheers!

Allan,
Save your money and have John at Hunter Offroad build a real roll cage
for you (assuming that you are really going to use your Jeep offroad).
If you want something that makes your Jeep look "tougher" go ahead and
get the OR or Toys by Troy cage. if you want a cage which you can bet
your life on; go talk to John at Hunter Offroad.

Joe also
prefers a cage that attaches to the floor (in the front) instead of to the
dash.
While I agree that extending the cage to the floor is a bit stronger, there
are
also other tradeoffs to consider. I decided I didn't want the tube in the
way
of getting in and out of my Jeep because my Jeep is a daily driver and I am

My windshield is not attached to my cage - it is only attached at the hinge.
It does not flop around. In fact, it seems pretty solid. If you think
about
it, CJ's were all this way too.

FWIW.

Subject: Best bet for finding front Dana 30 alloy axle shafts locally and in
stock?
Does anyony know my best bet for finding locally some alloy axle
shafts for my front Dana 30 (where I don't have to wait for them to
ship)? I checked with 4 Wheeler Supply and they sell the Warn nickel-
chromoly set, but do not have 'em in stock. I'm not familiar with the
vast number of other places around the valley that may have them in
stock, but I'd like to check around. Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Larry

Subject: State Land Permits
Steve Sample mentioned that they got stopped by the sheriff when they were
up at Florence Junction area for not having State Land Use Permits. When I
picked mine up here in Tucson they said they were very strict in that area
about the permits.
You can get one at the State Land Office here in Tucson at:
233 N Main Ave (just north of down town) Phone #628-5480. The office is in
one of the houses on the west side of Main.
The cost is $20 for a family and a little less for a single.
I think that your hunting license is also good for access to State Land.

Subject: Want to buy Old Jeep
Hi,
I know of someone looking to buy an older jeep. He wants a
narrow axle, CJ-5, CJ-7 or older, just to bum around in, for hunting,
etc. Stock or mostly stock. Something from the 50's, 60's or 70's would
be okay. (1982 was the last year for the narrow axles.) He is willing
to pay up to $3500 maximum, depending on condition. He name is Steve
Miller and his number is 480-892-4861. Please contact him directly if
you know of any jeep like this for sale.
Thanks, David

Exactly right, the hunting/fishing license grants you access to STL
for that explicit purpose (hunting/fishing); not running trails. If
you want to go four wheeling or camping then get the STL permit.
Family is exactly what it says... immediate family (spouse and
underage children), not uncles, aunts or blood relatives, and by no
means everyone in your vehicle.
