Stu,
I just installed my new CV shaft from Dick's and after reading your post went out and looked to see if they put a dust boot on mine, sure enough there isn't one there. There is a ring of some sorts with a zerk fitting for grease, do they use these instead? Do you have any pics showing this dust boot when it is installed? "Maybe I am just looking at it wrong?"

Subject: [az_vjc] update to poor drive shaft service
Some of you may remember that I posted my disappointment with Dicks Driveshaft shop back around the Easter time frame. I had dented my front driveshaft and took it to them for a balance job. They re-tubed it because they claimed it would not balance.
I posted that I was unhappy with their work as I got it back with needle bearings missing from the front axle end u-joint. Details/pics at:
http://www.stu-offroad.com/misc/shaft-1.htm
On my last FJ run, I noticed that my front drive shaft was squeaking again (TJ owners know all to well about this problem). I was surprised to notice it since I had just tore it down and did a complete grease job on the CV u-joints this past October. Given that much of our summer was spent NOT wheelin, and with only one trip to Moab since October, I really havent rolled up that much mileage.
So, yesterday morning, I dropped the front drive shaft and took the u-joints out to grease them (again).
As I was taking things apart, I kept thinking that something was not right. I took at look at the pics on my web site (from the October write-up) and quickly realized what was wrong.
The centering ball in the CV joint lightly rides in a large round cup, so to speak, that helps keep it free from dust and moisture (a dust boot if you would). You can see it here, http://www.stu-offroad.com/misc/images/ds-13.jpg
Well, guess what is missing from my front drive shaft? I suppose it is possible that it may have fallen off since I had the work done this past Easter. But&.I really doubt it. I feel quite confident that Dicks Driveshaft shop left it off (or broke it off?) when they did the work. It was obvious that they had taken the CV u-joints apart as there were two end caps with missing needle bearings in them (just like the problem with the axle end u-joint). There were NO missing needle bearings when I assembled them last October.
No&.I did not go down there to talk to them about this. If I did, someone would have to be springing for my bond and that would not be cool. They are not worth the trouble.
IMHO, this shop puts out some poor quality work at the best. You can certainly spend your money there if you wish, but Ill not pay them another $100 to screw up a drive shaft. Yes, it is only one data point that I am offering as proof. But there is NO reason that anyone should have to completely tear down a CV drive shaft to check needle bearings, etc. after they get it home. Since they can not be trusted, you would be a fool for not QAing the work yourself, true? They have already proven that to you.
Just thought I would share my recent discovery. Ill be looking for a new shop in a bit since I dont expect this drive shaft to last very long. With nothing protecting the centering ball from dirt and moisture, I dont think it will last too much longer.

Wow….imagine that….still using lockers and limited slips some 17,000 + years from now. Jeeps rule!

Front limited slip and lockers are dangerous on slick roads at speed.
The fronts travel at greater differential speeds than the rears and provide the steering. If the front diff should decide to lock up, one or both tires will slip.
I know from experience. Had a 1970 Toyota FJ40. Gleason rear and limited slip front. First time skiing at Tahoe, slid off the road and into a ditch that I couldn't get out of, even with 4x4 lo/lock. Winch was buried in mud/snow.
Tow truck operator who pulled me out said I most likely have locking front, as he see's this all the time with "city" folks and their nice shiny occasional and expensive 4x4's. He was wrong on the "city" folks, but right on about the limited slip front diff. Researched with my 4x4 buddies & reference material and it's well documented that it's not advisable to put lockers and only a "maybe" for limited slip on fronts, unless you are a serious offroad racer who knows the limitations for paved road usage.
One reason air lockers were invented. That would be nice to have on the front. Only initiate them when off road.

Any problems with running a locker in front and not having the axle
disconnect? I believe 95 and newer Jeeps have no disconnect and
still use lockers in front. I am considering using the stronger 1
pc. axle with the larger u-joints if there isn't a handling problem.
Thanks in advance,
Gary

I believe that the offer made was $100. That is just moronic to
expect her to take it as anything *but* an unnecessarily rude
response. Some people don't like Howard Stern, and they *****. I
say change the station. If you don't like her multiple posts, then
SKIP OVER THEM. Good Lord, guys, we have some current members here
who post just as often, maybe even more, and with less quality of
content. (I'll happily claim to be one of them.) I think that a
Scrambler for $2,500 is a GREAT deal, and after all of the recent
posts about people wanting "project Jeeps" I can't believe that no
one has snatched it up. My brother, in New York State, is looking
for a CJ-8, and cannot find one in even fair shape for less than
$4,500. This one sounds pretty decent, so, Katie, I will tell me
brother about your rig. Good luck with selling it, and post as often
as you would like. I don't remember any rules about limits for
posts, but I would suggest joining the AZVJC at www.azvjc.org and
posting it on the "Classified" section, since it was pointed out that
your Jeep is not found there. If it is (I did not look) then
nevermind...

Some of you may remember that I posted my disappointment with Dick¹s Driveshaft shop back around the Easter time frame.
Given that much of our summer was spent NOT wheelin¹, and with only one trip to Moab since October, I really haven¹t rolled up that much mileage.
So, yesterday morning, I dropped the front drive shaft and took the u-joints out to grease them (again).
As I was taking things apart, I kept thinking that something was not right. I took at look at the pics on my web site (from the October write-up) and quickly realized what was wrong.
The centering ball in the CV joint lightly rides in a large round ³cup², so to speak, that helps keep it free from dust and moisture (a dust boot if you would). You can see it here, http://www.stu-offroad.com/misc/images/ds-13.jpg
Well, guess what is missing from my front drive shaft? I suppose it is possible that it may have ³fallen² off since I had the work done this past Easter. But .I really doubt it. I feel quite confident that Dick¹s Driveshaft shop left it off (or broke it off?) when they did the work. It was obvious that they had taken the CV u-joints apart as there were two end caps with missing needle bearings in them (just like the problem with the axle end u-joint). There were NO missing needle bearings when I assembled them last October.
No .I did not go down there to talk to them about this. If I did, someone would have to be springing for my bond and that would not be cool. They are not worth the trouble.
IMHO, this shop puts out some poor quality work at the best. You can certainly spend your money there if you wish, but I¹ll not pay them another $100 to screw up a drive shaft.
I¹ll be looking for a new shop in a bit since I don¹t expect this drive shaft to last very long. With nothing protecting the centering ball from dirt and moisture, I don¹t think it will last too much longer.

lower level of maturity....
I've noticed allot of the senior members haven't been posting much, but when
they do, it's almost always constructive. I wonder if they see the same
thing, and are trying to turn it around. I wonder if it's because they are
outgrowing the group, or because the group has shifted to a lower level of
maturity. I wonder if they are getting tired of helping people, knowing when
they do, they are going to be on their own, not only for the time spent
helping, but after that, too.

Chris,
I suppose it could have been a bad day….things do go wrong and things can get broken….but that is no excuse. IMO, the difference between Dicks and a good shop is that the good shop admits they made the mistake and corrects it. As I said before….there is no reason I have to quality check THEIR work. I paid them $100 for the work. Maybe I missed the sign that said I could pay $200 and have it done correctly.
Have you taken your u-joints apart and checked them? From my experience, that is the ONLY way you will be able to determine that they did a “top notch job”. As the old saying goes….”Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.”

Having installed both of these cages (Troy and ORF) I will throw in my 2
cents. Both appear to be pretty equal in most aspects. But the one thing
I do not like about the one from Troy is that there is no bracket
bracing the windshield. The only thing keeping the windshiled from
flopping around is the bolt on each hinge. The top side is completely
free. The windshield wobbles around.

No offense intended here... But us younger audience would call this
topic of discussion gay... Lets move on. We have done so much good in
the past few months as for creating an image for the 4 wheeling
enthusiasts'. I believe that this group has a LOT to do with the
decisions that are made as far as what land stay open for ohv use. Most
of our Sr. members are to be thanked for all of the huge turn outs at
BLM and state land use meetings... We do to much good around to help
our community and fellow jeepers to let a little annoyance effect our
group like this... We need you old farts :o) lighten up people...Sounds
like this Friday's lunch needs to be at a bar. Cheers!

David,
So what? I'd like to see you stick around. This group wasn't any better
before you joined and certainly isn't any worse now. Maybe your
perception of it has changed? I haven't posted much lately because I've
been too busy with work and taking Cisco classes.
I think proper use of the delete key is the most effective way to deal
with some of the garbage.
Hoping you stick it out,

Not a problem Hogan. Glad you made it.
Have you put any thought into a run from Prescott to CK on Senator

Stu,
I just installed my new CV shaft from Dick's and after reading your post went out and looked to see if they put a dust boot on mine, sure enough there isn't one there.

Maybe they were just having a bad day. I just had the length on both my driveshafts changed and they did a top notch job. They even installed a couple free u-joints.

Some of you may remember that I posted my disappointment with Dick¹s Driveshaft shop back around the Easter time frame.
I¹ll be looking for a new shop in a bit since I don¹t expect this drive shaft to last very long. With nothing protecting the centering ball from dirt and moisture, I don¹t think it will last too much longer.

Hey Bill, Remember this hypocritical email? It mentions something about the
lower level of maturity....
I've noticed allot of the senior members haven't been posting much, but when
they do, it's almost always constructive. I wonder if they see the same
thing, and are trying to turn it around. I wonder if it's because they are
outgrowing the group, or because the group has shifted to a lower level of
maturity. I wonder if they are getting tired of helping people, knowing when
they do, they are going to be on their own, not only for the time spent
helping, but after that, too.

that this group has a LOT to do with the decisions that are made as far as
what land stay open for ohv use. Most of our Sr. members are to be thanked

Chris,
I suppose it could have been a bad day….things do go wrong and things can get broken….but that is no excuse.

It's interesting how the complaints usually waste more bandwidth than
the original messages did. It just goes to show that using the delete

Some people have thin skin. You gotta be thick skinned and battle tested
to hang out here I guess. Better go trade the Jeep in for a nice cushy
