Bruce,
I myself have not done it but it is a very common swap for a yj! Check out
MORE's kit, which has pretty much all brackets necessary. Also, if you go
out to www.google.com and search for "ford 8.8 yj" I am sure you would come
up with hundreds of write-up's on this very swap.
It is something I plan to do in the near future! One thing to look for is an
8.8 out of a 95+ explorer or mountaineer. If you get lucky, you may find one
with stock 4.10's and a limited slip diff.
Let us know where you find the Axle and how much you spend for it. They tend
to be a bit pricey since they are so popular.
Hope this helps!

Has anyone installed one of the 8.8 rear ends out of the explorer into a yj.
I'm considering going this route because of the rear disk setup. I've heard
along the way that it's as durable as the 44's. And also it wil bolt right
up with very little modifications. Any input would be greatly appreciated.
Also, is there a certain year I should be looking for.

Subject: [TR] Woodpecker (Upper) - Saturday, August 10, 2002
Hello All,
steve sample is leading a Woodpecker (Upper) trail run on Saturday, August 10, 2002.
When: 8:00am sat
Where: the turn-off to cottonwood cyn off of hwy 79 @ about 5 miles south of florence jct
Rating: 4.0+
Length: 3-4 hrs
CB Channel: 4
somewhat short run with lots of rocks. other trails can be attacked if time permits like upper ajax, jack handle or highway to hell.
woodpecker can be done with 31's and at least LSD in front and rear. or 33's with LSD in rear. these could take the by-passes. locked F/R for the tough lines.
Upper Woodpecker is a wash that runs to the Woodpecker Mine. Years ago this wash was the actual road from the mine. There have been many hours of fun playing and traversing on this trail. It offers rock ledges, cracks, "tippy spots" and is the home of the infamous "Fire Hole". It was one of the first "extreme" trails offered in Arizona.
Over the years this trail has seen the result of "rock stacking" and "ramp building" that has down rated the trail from a 4.5 to a 4.0 but it still has a number of "play areas" and lockers are still required for the harder portion of the trail.
Upon exiting the wash you will climb to the top of the hill where the mine is located. There is an amethyst pit mine near the entrance to the Woodpecker Mine where you will most likely find several "rock hounds" or mountain bikers.
Don't forget your lunch and water. This is one of the longer trails and is normally an all day trip.
Enjoy and remember to TREAD Lightly!

Subject: [TR] Trip Report - Turkey Creek - Sunday, August 4, 2002
Hello All,
Joey Kulich lead a trail run Sunday, August 4, 2002 across Turkey Creek
Well Almost didn't make it on this trip. A scorpion stung me last night and the foot is in a bit of pain. Feels like it is tingly, like it is asleep. But being the true Jeeper I am, even a scorpion can't keep me off the trails in my Jeep.
Anyway this was a "pre-run" for the upcoming Annual LP to CK run. I wanted to see the trail conditions and plot it on the GPS.
I met up with Gary, Joe and Hogan. We all aired down and gave a few extra minutes for any would be stragglers. I was a bit nervous about getting lost. I had only been on this trail twice before. To my dismay we made it with only one back track (because of a wash out) and a couple of side tracks which made the trail interesting.
Unfortunately the creeks are dry even thought there was evidence of rain in the past 24 to 48 hours. Quite a bit of the trail is narrow and we all got our fair share of desert pin striping... well maybe the Camo Cow got a bit more then the rest of us.
It was really awesome watching the Camo Cow crawl. Gary has a really nice set up.
Joe has a great setup to in his Little Black Willys Jeep. That thing will go just about anywhere.
Hogan did a great job in his nearly stock and open CJ7. Oh and with street tires I might add.
There was little rock crawlin', and hill climbin' as usual on this trip. We did stop and break at some old house ruins and at the Howard Canyon Mine (?).
At the end we stopped at the bar in Cleater cooled of a bit with a cold one and headed out.
OK ok so this is where I made the wrong turn. I was looking for the road that takes you to I17 before the Sunset Point rest stop and made the first left when I should have made the second left. Oh well live and learn.
Hogan made this turn so he could head up to Prescott and the rest of us took off through Bumble Bee to the black top. We aired up and went on our way.
Thank you guys for coming out and making this a memorable trip. I had a blast.
Pictures to follow.

Mike and Nick,
If I am not mistaken Nick's offer was for $100, and not a serious one. I
read it as sarcasm.
I do not agree with the f-off response, but I do agree with Joey as far as
providing guidance for the email group and the new users, as opposed to
bashing them.
AZVJC has come a long ways to establish a good reputation and as a group
should not chip at it like this.

Subject: Auto tranny swap done !
Well, after much sweat, much work, and many lessons learned, it's finished !!!!! Only one little minor issue to fix. A little binding in the shifting of the xfer case. I'll check tomorrow, but we're betting the the bell crank and/or the rod that connects the bell crank to the shifting lever on the xfer case is different between the 5 speed and the auto. The bracket that bolts to the xfer case for the linkage was.
Anyway, I have to shorten the front driveshaft and lengthen the rear (I love a longer rear driveshaft ;) ), and that's it. We have the rear driveshaft in and it's fine to drive, just can't wheel with it that short.
Everything works that we had to wire !!!!!! Backup lights, torque converter lockup, tranny fluid temp guage, etc. !!!!!!
IT'S GREAT !!!!
I can't believe I drove it home today, and even put in to highway miles (I-10). This is the end of a year long project (well, thinking about it for that long).
The only real damage was that I broke the first joint of my right index finger, and have to wear a split on it for 6 weeks, but, hey, I'm more than happy.
I can't thank Dan enough. Without his help (especially since I was half crippled with the broken finger), knowledge, tools, and just general skills, this would not have happened....
I'm ready to wheel, well as soon as I get the driveshafts down, which should be this week. I'm also thinking that I'll be ditching the Tera 4:1..
Pictures to follow in a few days. Stu, I'll have a write up for you also...
:)

Jeeps with girls on them? Seems like a waste to me. We'd be so busy
looking at the suspensions and stuff that the girls would be all but
unnoticed.

Since Miller is a pretty poor version of a watered-down American

well? LOL!!! Nothing like Jeeps and wet t-shirts to help determine

Bruce,
I myself have not done it but it is a very common swap for a yj! Check out
MORE's kit, which has pretty much all brackets necessary.

:)

I have 5, 15X8 canyons with 30X9.5 GSA's that I took off my wrangler. They
got about 17,000 miles on them. Noticed you only left a phone number in

Well you have obviously come to that point in your life. How old are
you again?!!!
Any real man would have said that it would be nice to be able to look at
a picture for than just a flip of the page. We could check out the
jeeps too!!!

Jeeps with girls on them? Seems like a waste to me. We'd be so busy
looking at the suspensions and stuff that the girls would be all but
unnoticed.

Since Miller is a pretty poor version of a watered-down American
pils style beer, are the girls and Jeeps going to be watered-down as
well? LOL!!! Nothing like Jeeps and wet t-shirts to help determine
what day of the week it is... :P
