Any problems with running a locker in front and not having the axle
disconnect? I believe 95 and newer Jeeps have no disconnect and
still use lockers in front. I am considering using the stronger 1
pc. axle with the larger u-joints if there isn't a handling problem.
Thanks in advance,
Gary

Bruce,

I myself have not done it but it is a very common swap for a yj! Check out
MORE's kit, which has pretty much all brackets necessary. Also, if you go
out to www.google.com and search for "ford 8.8 yj" I am sure you would come
up with hundreds of write-up's on this very swap.

It is something I plan to do in the near future! One thing to look for is an
8.8 out of a 95+ explorer or mountaineer. If you get lucky, you may find one
with stock 4.10's and a limited slip diff.

Let us know where you find the Axle and how much you spend for it. They tend
to be a bit pricey since they are so popular.

Hope this helps!

I'm considering going this route because of the rear disk setup. I've heard
along the way that it's as durable as the 44's. And also it wil bolt right
up with very little modifications. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Front limited slip and lockers are dangerous on slick roads at speed.

The fronts travel at greater differential speeds than the rears and provide the steering. If the front diff should decide to lock up, one or both tires will slip.

I know from experience. Had a 1970 Toyota FJ40. Gleason rear and limited slip front. First time skiing at Tahoe, slid off the road and into a ditch that I couldn't get out of, even with 4x4 lo/lock. Winch was buried in mud/snow.

Tow truck operator who pulled me out said I most likely have locking front, as he see's this all the time with "city" folks and their nice shiny occasional and expensive 4x4's. He was wrong on the "city" folks, but right on about the limited slip front diff. Researched with my 4x4 buddies & reference material and it's well documented that it's not advisable to put lockers and only a "maybe" for limited slip on fronts, unless you are a serious offroad racer who knows the limitations for paved road usage.

One reason air lockers were invented. That would be nice to have on the front. Only initiate them when off road.

Scott Maiden has one in his YJ, doesn't he? James Towle has one
in his TJ. I have one sitting in my garage waiting for gears, and
then it'll be under MY TJ, thanks to a lot of help from James Towle
and John Kanicsar (Hunter Offroad). I got mine here in town for $300
with new pads, rotors, and calipers. (The whole axle was from a
brand new and totalled Explorer.) Check www.car-part.com

I found time to install my new 5 point harnesses today.

I'd like to thank Wayne Richardson over at OR Fab for welding in the horizontal bar and tabs for the eye bolts. It took a bit of extra work to bend it to clear the seats yet fit inside the new Bestop Halftop. He did a great job!

And a special thanks to my wife Theresa for getting these for my upcoming birthday on Sept 1st. Over the last couple of years she has bought me a Warn 9500 winch, Mastercraft Racing Seats, and now the 5 point harnesses. I guess I better keep her around for another year. There's those high pinion Dynatrac Pro Rock 60's that I still want. ;)

Now if I can only remember to close the door BEFORE I put the harnesses on.

She sounds very classy and like she really wants to sell her Jeep....I mean
who wouldn't buy a Jeep from someone who told them to f-off. With kindness
like that I'm surprised you didn't offer her double her asking price8>)

Larry,

What a great group we had yesterday, heck no one was annoyed about the
breakage. It can happen to anyone. Most everybody pitched in and helped,
and the rest patiently waited. What better place to stop and take the
nature in that Martinez Canyon.

It was great wheeling with you again,

Nasser

I'd like to thank the 8/3 Martinez Canyon group for helping me get my
busted axle/u-joint fixed. This came in the form of providing spare
parts, lending tools, turning wrenches, providing repair directions,
and otherwise being patient while trip progress was held up for more
than an hour (in the hot sun, no less). Thanks Steve Sample for
lending my your YJ spare parts. I'll be buying a new stuff and
return your spare back to you as soon as possible.
Thanks again ... and I had a great time.
See you all again on future adventures,
Larry

Subject: update to poor drive shaft service

Some of you may remember that I posted my disappointment with Dicks Driveshaft shop back around the Easter time frame. I had dented my front driveshaft and took it to them for a balance job. They re-tubed it because they claimed it would not balance.

I posted that I was unhappy with their work as I got it back with needle bearings missing from the front axle end u-joint. Details/pics at:

http://www.stu-offroad.com/misc/shaft-1.htm

On my last FJ run, I noticed that my front drive shaft was squeaking again (TJ owners know all to well about this problem). I was surprised to notice it since I had just tore it down and did a complete grease job on the CV u-joints this past October. Given that much of our summer was spent NOT wheelin, and with only one trip to Moab since October, I really havent rolled up that much mileage.

So, yesterday morning, I dropped the front drive shaft and took the u-joints out to grease them (again).

As I was taking things apart, I kept thinking that something was not right. I took at look at the pics on my web site (from the October write-up) and quickly realized what was wrong.

The centering ball in the CV joint lightly rides in a large round cup, so to speak, that helps keep it free from dust and moisture (a dust boot if you would). You can see it here, http://www.stu-offroad.com/misc/images/ds-13.jpg

Well, guess what is missing from my front drive shaft? I suppose it is possible that it may have fallen off since I had the work done this past Easter. But&.I really doubt it. I feel quite confident that Dicks Driveshaft shop left it off (or broke it off?) when they did the work. It was obvious that they had taken the CV u-joints apart as there were two end caps with missing needle bearings in them (just like the problem with the axle end u-joint). There were NO missing needle bearings when I assembled them last October.

No&.I did not go down there to talk to them about this. If I did, someone would have to be springing for my bond and that would not be cool. They are not worth the trouble.

IMHO, this shop puts out some poor quality work at the best. You can certainly spend your money there if you wish, but Ill not pay them another $100 to screw up a drive shaft. Yes, it is only one data point that I am offering as proof. But there is NO reason that anyone should have to completely tear down a CV drive shaft to check needle bearings, etc. after they get it home. Since they can not be trusted, you would be a fool for not QAing the work yourself, true? They have already proven that to you.

Just thought I would share my recent discovery. Ill be looking for a new shop in a bit since I dont expect this drive shaft to last very long. With nothing protecting the centering ball from dirt and moisture, I dont think it will last too much longer.

Don't bother to try AZ drivelines. I bought a Jeep with thier drive
shafts from a board member & the front one had broken apart where
they welded the slip part on no penetration at all. I have read other
bad stories on here as well.
Just my input.

I always had good luck at dicks but now am a bit worried.

You guys are worse then she is!!

As far as I can tell it is Jeep related. To me it looks like she is
trying to help out a fellow Jeeper! WTF is wrong with trying to sell
your Jeep on this board? To me she sounds a bit desperate and needs to
sell it ASAP. If she posted every 5 minutes or hour, yes I would too
have a problem with that. But she doesn't. I would just leave her posts
alone. You're only helping her out by bringing attention to her. Let's
see... She posts once you guy repost it 5 times. Hummm

Oh and yes I have read every one of her emails. She appears to be new
behind a keyboard and instead of helping her some of you are being down
right rude to her.

Her vulgar email was off list. Apparently it was one of you guys that
made it public.

You'll get a lot better response being nice instead of being rude. You
guys are making this list look bad. I think this goes back to what Bill
M. was saying. Something about the quality of post that are happening
recently.
