Hello All,
steve sample is leading a Martinez Canyon trail run on Saturday, August 3, 2002.
When: sat 8:30 am
Where: on hwy 79, just north of florence between the gila river and the railroad tracks. this would be the entrance to box cyn.
Rating: 4.0+
Length: about 5-6 hrs back on pvmt
CB Channel: 4
eddie nordstrom and i will meet any other home-boys that want to caravan at 6:45 sharp at the chevron station on the east side of I-10 at cortaro. we will head up I-10 to picacho, north on 87 through the big town of coolidge, then east to florence.
we will head up box cyn. awesome narrow gorge if you never been. easy for a stocker. then over to martinez. stop at the cabins for a break- trees. then the REAL trail begins up martinez. LOTS of rocks. there are by-passes but still pretty rough. i have seen stock jeeps make it but it's rough. totally cool run sprinkled with max scenery. those that have done before know the routine :)
later,steve
JUST A BETTER DESCRIPTION OF THE MEET PLACE:
for those who have never been, the box cyn turn-off is just on the north edge of town(florence). if you are coming from mesa on the 60 and then turn south on the 79 at florence jct, it is about 15 miles to florence and the meet point. you come down a mellow hill, into town and at the bottom of hill you will cross rr tracks-STOP, you are there. the gila river/bridge is just a few hundred feet past the tracks. if you cross the gila- you done gone too far.
my cell is 520-907-2838 if you run into trouble.
later,steve
Martinez Canyon has to be one of the most beautiful canyons south of the Sedona AZ red bluffs. To reach the trailhead you travel over rolling hills of desert cactus, shrubs and trees. All of a sudden you enter a narrow passageway into a canyon of deep red bluffs and cottonwood trees.
Most of the year there is a spring that winds through the trees and low area. You will find the old homestead at the grouping of cottonwood trees along with some old mining generators and storerooms. Just past the homestead you will drop into the wash and follow it to the old mill.
The road winds back and forth across the wash as well as follows the wash for a time but the trail stays in the wash. You can spend hours "playing" on the rocks and waterfalls.
A mile or so into the wash you will approach a large landslide blocking the wash so the trail starts up the switchback trail "to the top of the world". The view from the top of the mountain is breathtaking.
As you start back down the switchback trail you will find it has been washed out, big time! The washout cuts through several of the "switchbacks" in a cut approximately 8 feet deep and 8 foot wide, so down you go. After a drop into the washout you will crank a hard left turn and literally freeslide on the loose gravel/dirt about 200 yards.
The first comment made from one of the original founders is the best description to the end of a great day of wheeling. "This is better than an 'E' Ticket ride at Disneyland! It's wheel'n the luge!"
This trail is definitely for the "extreme" vehicle as well as an experienced driver. Lockers are required and 33" tires and maximum clearance are a must.
Enjoy and remember to TREAD Lightly!
NOTE: 2/17/02 - I (Stu Olson) ran the trail yesterday and I believe it is safe to say that there is not much of a chance to "run the luge" anymore. I could be mistaken, but few (any?) would survive the drop into the luge. It is extrememly erroded now and the old bypass is now the main path down, IMO.

Yeah, Nick.
Your going to have to get that fixed!
You could go get another rebuilt head and bolt it on.
Advantage is you'll be running again in no time.
Disadvantage is you are going to pay dearly for it (Especially when it comes to core charge.).
You could get yours welded.
Advantage is it'll cost less than a new one.
Disadvantage is this may take allot longer than replacing it. Kinda depends where it's cracked, and the machine shop's workload.
Is this on your 97? Got a warrantee?

Subject: [TR] Turkey Creek - Sunday, August 4, 2002 - Reminder
Hello All,
Joey Kulich is leading a Turkey Creek trail run on Sunday, August 4, 2002.
When: Meet around 7:30 am and start trail at 8 am
Where: End of the pavement for the Bumble Bee/Crown King exit. This is before Sunset Point.
Rating: 3.0+
Length: ~5 hrs
CB Channel: CB 4/FRS 4
This is going to be a fun run through the Turkey Creek trail. I am more or less checking it out for the annual run coming up.
Like to keep this to around ten vehicles. (like I could draw a crowd :) I'd like to get through this trail pretty quick and maybe have time to take some optional lines.
IF I get a good response I will change my afternoon plans to accomadate more Jeeps.
Hooks front and back and a strap for them required.
At Cleator you have the choice of going to CK (for lunch) or back to town.
Bring water, lunch (unless your going to eat in CK) and your camera.
Libations optional AT THE END of the run!
Joey K

The Turkey Creek Trail runs up the Black Canyon from Bumble Bee to Cleator. After turning left off the main road onto FR 684, the trail will split to go down into the canyon, and then meet back up at the bottom. Either way will get you down, neither are very tough.
Once down to the bottom, take a hard right up and drive up the sandy wash. Keep an eye out for a trail that leads off from the left. If you get to a wide area where the wash splits, you've gone too far. The trail runs between tight brush on each side, there is a gate that you'll have to go through not to far along. As with all gates, if it's open when you find it leave it open; if it's closed then make sure you close it after you pass through.
The trail at this point winds its way up the wash, in many places the trail has all but disappeared. There will be rocky areas to play on along the way. If the river is running, you'll want to make sure you have a winch along, as there are boulders and quick sand hiding, waiting to bite a Jeep.
Keep following the wash up, eventually the road will become more apparent. The trail takes a steep climb out to the top of a ridge, then drops off the other side. You will come to a Y intersection, you may go either way. The left branch climbs another ridge and then drops you back into the wash on the other side.
The right branch takes you through an old hermit's mining claim. The trail on the right branch almost completly disappears; pick your way through carefully you'll find rocky flat areas with no brush on them, this is the trail. After passing around the corner from the Hermit's cabin, you'll see where the trail used to go across a bend in the wash; now that is pretty much impassable. You can continue up the wash and around the corner. If the water is running, this may be extremely hazardous.
After the bend, the two trails combine again. The trail is much more visible now, there will be a few places where the trail splits, take the most travelled looking trail. Go SLOW one of these side trails (the old trail) has about a four foot angled drop off as you come around a blind curve.
The further you go, the more apparent the trail is. At the joining of Poland Creek and Turkey Creek, the trail leaves the bottom of the canyon and heads across the hills to Cleator. Overall, with a small group of Jeeps, this trail can be done between 4 - 6 hours when dry depending on how much site seeing you do. If it is really wet, this can be a weekend trip. One note of caution, this trail runs almost entirely through active mining claims; do NOT stop and start digging around.
Remember to bring water, lunch (and more if it's wet), and don't forget your camera.
Enjoy and remember to TREAD Lightly!

Hello All,
steve sample is leading a Martinez Canyon trail run on Saturday, August 3, 2002.
