My 1990 XJ has a heavy clunk under the passenger side where your feet would be. This doesn't happen on the road, just when on bumps. I can't get it to do it by jumping on the bumper. I replaced the lower control arms with the Rusty's lift kit. I triple checked my work and all is proper / tight. Upper control arms are stock with 200,000 miles on them. Would worn upper control bushings make this heavy clunk sound? I can't think of anything else that would clunk but you guys might. I've spent enough on this project that I don't want to throw money at it needlessly but it's looking like new uppers may be needed.

How are the upper bushing on the axle ? is the upper shock mount tight ?
Bushings worn on the shock ? Upper control arm bracket loose ? sometimes they break away from the unibody.

A few things to check.

Upper bushings on the axle? I assume you mean the upper control arms... they look old and brittle. New shocks... thats not it. Checked all bolts on uppers... they are tight. No broken brackets.

swaybar hitting the spring? I had a bad track bar bushing that made a clunk after I put my lift on but I'm sure you got a new trackbar with your lift. I pieced mine together with used parts.

I'll have to look again but I don't think the swaybar comes close to the spring... and yes it is a new adjustable that came with the lift. The clunk doesn't take much suspension travel to happen, just a rough road does it. I was on the four peaks road yesterday and it clunked a lot. When going slow and climbing... barely any clunking.

I can be coasting down a grade and it still clunks. Doesn't have any connection to throttle on or off.

Unless an obvious something is mentioned here I'll probably try adjustable uppers. Need them anyway eventually. Care to PM me a price?
