Anyone here had their ESP activate?

Yesterday I was out cruising the town with my 9 year old son and we came upon a corner that had a lot of loose dirt on it. Since we were in the middle of nowhere, I figured I would have a little fun and goose it around the corner to get the back end to break loose a bit. Just as soon as it started to break loose, the ESP took over and applied the back left brake hard (and maybe others, but that's what it felt like). The result was that I went exactly in the direction that I had the wheels pointed.

The system works. I guess you'll have to disable it to drift :), but it works as advertised.

Anyone else had instances where they actually felt the system working for you?

Yes. When we went to play at the Cinders, could NOT get the Jeep to cut loose unless it was in 4L or 4H with the ESP turned off. But, of course, then you have to work much harder to cut loose!

Do you have the '07 or '08? Do you have a lift at all?

Mine's an 07 X Unlimited. I plan on installing a 3.5" RK lift and 35" Baja Claws.....just waiting on the money from the sale of my CJ7.

I haven't experienced it in the JK but know of people who have in the Commander: http://www.jeepcommander.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2918

We have had many of our 07 ESP systems malfunction. Sometimes it's the little steering column sleeve that pops out and causes the sensors to go all screwy, and sometimes it is just the draglink being a little off adjustment from the lift or from abuse.

ESP in the JK is one of the most fun things you could EVER play with when used how it was designed. You should have also noticed it pulled throttle out also. If you TRY to drive it like you stole it, keep your foot on the floor, and THROW it into a corner really hard with some MPH behind ya, it will almost drive itself. Its really fun for fire roading too. If you REALLY want it FULLY off, place the Jeep in 4H or 4L, place the trans in Neutral. Press and hold the ESP button for 8 seconds. You will hear a chime and notice that where your Odometer is it will say "ESPOFF" It will be completely off at this point and will stay that way untill you either shift back to 2H or turn the Jeep ignition OFF. Have fun and by all means, please be safe when doing this. If you have any other questions about the JK or the RK lift, please feel free to give me a call at the shop, anytime!!! Or stop by and see our 07 on 37's with the RK 5.5" lift.

Joe, we spoke about a month ago about the RK lift. That conversation convinced me to have you install it for me. Once I get the cash, I'll give you a yell.

Any chance that I can get you to measure the 07 on 37s at the highest point? That's really where I'd like to go, but I'm limited to 80" or less. That's why I'm looking at the 3.5" lift and 35s - I don't think anything bigger will fit in my garage.

I have had the chance to test esp with our own Viper drifters and WOW does ESP work!!! The 2007's require the procedure that Joe expalined, the 2008's automaticall disable ESP 100% in 4L. Tom, can't wait to see your JK on 35's!!

Joe, 40's???? Are you using a flatflender??? Or more lift???

I would like to see if 40's fir with less lift and flatflenders!

Sure thing, if we don't get out on the same run, I'll make sure I bring it by. I still have to drop off the survey card for you.

The '07 ESP is disabled in 4L automatically also, you just don't get the pretty ESPOFF on the dash like the '08. The TCS still functions, though, so essentially, it is not TOTALLY off. It is off enough to do doughnuts! ;D

No can do - I'm working on the 16th. I may be able to do the 15th, but it will be stock since I won't be getting my lift until after Christmas.

I knew that's how it was in the XK but didn't speak up because I didn't know if the JK was different.

What lift size / tire size combination (if different than stock) are you guys running on your new Rubicons?

We put 2" spacer lifts with stock 32" tires on the 2-doors, and 2.5 springs with 35's on the 4-doors. In Moab, we also run some of the 2-doors with the 35's.

Jason, It will have M.O.R.E. tube fender on it when it gets 40's. Same lift though. Just relocated the rear shocks UP 2.5" And cut off the lower part of the arm bracket. Gonna be testing some new gears in the next couple of weeks. You can check out the HID's On Sat.....:)
