View Full Version : Who wants to help with my transfer case?

So I've been fixing my transfer case and just can't seem to get it back together...without the chain in it, it slides right together, but I know I can't run it without the chain (oil delivery problem I believe).
When the chain is in, it binds up with the case halves about an inch apart...
If I can get the case back together, it shouldn't take very long to finish up, just driveshafts and skid plate....
Anyone free today or tomorrow to help me out, I kinda need to get this done by Monday and I have thrown too many wrenches around the garage in frustration already.
Thanks a lot guys,
Keith

I will be at Dobson and the 60... But
Did you mark the clocking of the gears and chain before you took it apart?

What ended up being the problem with getting it back together? You dont have to mark gears before removing it.

I am guessing he couldnt get the chain to stay on, and keep everything aligned, after 3-4 attempts we got it together.

I find it easy to put the front half in my wood vise and drop the shafts in verticcally. Then it seems to go together pretty easy.

Think about it Joe, I know you know gears, and how they wear together, just like bearings and race's
The chain it's whole life has gone in one direction around the sprocket right?!?
Well just like bearings and gears, and other components that wear together, you put it back on the same direction to keep the wear pattern the same...
DUH!
of all people to ask that question, I would have never thought you would:dizzy2:

So when you remove ring and pinion you mark them. It sounds good in theory, but I think you are reaching for something here.

Ohh btw,
if your going to complain about it, go ahead!
I didn't see either of you offer to help, and if you did you probably would have charged him to do it, and make him bring it to you or your shop...
I actually did a lot today..
I went to Terron's Diagnosed why his girlfriend's Toyota wouldn't start, it happened to be the ignition coil! you would have charged what $80 to diag, and additional hour in labor to replace it right?
Then after his house I went to Keith's house to help him get the t-case back together!
You would have charged what? 100-200 bucks to do it?
Then after Keith's house I went to Andrew's house to help him and Chris install a Locker.
Thats what? another 200-300 bucks?
And I did it all at with no prob.
Driving 130 miles today for 3 different house calls.. 20 bucks in Gas ( Thanks Terron )
spending 2 hours in the car.. TIme not possible to replace. ( time away from family )
Fixing two vehicles and enhancing another... PRICELESS!

Ok guys and gals... lets remember... not everyone does things
the same way.. and yes... there will be comments posted... :argue: ..... :nono:
Lets not forget...
Adam did offer to help and he did just that, he helped Keith get
the transfer case installed and its working just fine...
Lets not start a bashing war on how something is done... it was
done, it works... just ask Keith.
keep on track guys... its also the holidays...
thank you for your time...

Oh Adam, hope I didn't wake you up. I wasn't drunk dialing, well I sorta was but not to you. My niece used to be first on my list for years, now you are alphabetically.
Sorry.
I'm back in town for a couple days.

My post when I asked you what it was I said good job on helping. I help when I can , but I do value my time with my family, and yes I do put a price on it. You should have easily made couple hunded dollars at minimum combined all day for your trouble and helping, and that would have been good deal for everyone. Some of us make too much money turning wrenches for living it is hard to do it for free for stranger. I help out people I have met before, and if someone breaks on the trail I am the first one to break out my tools and get them going again. You will learn after being mechanic for a while that there is a price to pay for your time, and inconvience to your family.
Btw good job helping out all these people. You are good person for doing all that work for free.
