View Full Version : soft tops?
Are all soft tops created equal? I know that's a pretty dumb question and the answer is no but my 92 has a factory soft top and the hardware is in pretty nasty shape. Some missing parts. I'm debating to try and patch it up or just buy an all new setup with top and hardware. If I go that route will I be removing every bit of factory hardware to say... go with a Besttop?

Bestop made the TJ factory tops and makes the best replacements on the market. I have a Bestop Tigertop on my CJ and it is great. I also have their full soft doors and soft half doors and seats which I also like a lot. I fully reccomend Bestop products.

I have purchased a number of softtops and they have always been Bestop Supertops. It's been my experience that the sail cloth is a heavier weight and the hardware is stout enough for many years to come if taken care of.
With the supertop, you will get all the necessary hardware, so yes you will remove everything old that pertains to your current top. If I remember correctly you will have to drill a few holes in your windshield frame to mount the windshield channel.
Also with Bestop's Supertop, you can remove all windows including the rear sides, which will extend the life of them when they are left at home when not needed. Also treat the zippers with graphite or silicon lubricant, this will extend the life of them.

Chris -
Don't go over board right this minute with stuff.
4 Wheelers Supply is having a Christmas sale close to Christmas. Check the sponsor forum for the dates.
The pricing is well worth the wait!
You can PM Cole @ 4 Wheelers who can give you information and $$.
I HIGHLY Recommend waiting..
As far as tops go, BESTOP is the best. Go with a supertop with tinted windows.
So far everyone I talk with says the same... go with the Bestop Supertop. I'm going with a black top but see the offer two materials. Which one is better the regular black or the denim black?
thanks

Oh one more question....
I have half doors right now but if I were to come across a set of full metal doors can I interchange them on the same top? Will the door jams all mate up?

Errr... I think I have always went with the 01 ... which I think is the Black Denim. After sometime in the sun/dust it won't matter anyways.
Full doors should work however, the nice thing about the 1/2 soft upper doors is that you can bend them a little inwards to ensure a nice tight fit. Obviously you can't do this with full metal doors and I would be surprised if you got a watertight fit with full doors + a Supertop meant to be used with 1/2 uppers.... but hey... how often do we need a watertight fit anyways? :dozey:

If your hardware is still in good shape, the Bestop R.A.T.(Replace-a-top) is a great deal. Factory quality and way cheaper than a Super top.

I think he said the hardware was in rough shape and missing pieces,
the super top is a good setup....
get the tinted windows with it
As for the half doors, keep them. If you get a hardtop, you can add hard half uppers for a price though....you may even get full hard doors with the top....
