View Full Version : trying to pick out size of rims?
Been tossing this one around in my head so I figured I'd put it out there on the table.
Looking at putting a 4" lift on my 92 YJ which was easy to pick but now I'm kind of stuck on picking rims/tires. On one hand I was thinking what might be great is to get 16x8 rims so that both the jeep and my GMC Duramax could run the same size (285/75/16). Then again I cringe at buying those tires and going that route would double that dreaded time at the tire dealer. I was thinking first time out I'd just buy the GMC a new set of rubber and move the BFG T/A's over to the Jeep. Then after that just keep moving the tires from the GMC over to the Jeep in hopes they'd last for a long time on the Jeep weighing half that of the GMC.
OR.... just look into some cheaper tires and put new rubber on both when needed.
If that's the route.... 15" 16" or 17"?????
Oh the decisions.... :banghead:

a 15x8" rim is what I always reccomend for a Jeep. Tires are cheaper and have good sidewall. A 16" wouldnt be sacrelige on a Jeep, the Rubis come with them but I think 17" is too big for normal sized tires.

If you want to run smaller than a 35" tire and never plan on going that big, I would stay with 15's. If you think you want to go that big, but don't have a huge budget I would run 15's. If you want to run 35" rubber or bigger and can spend some cash, I would get a nice set of 17" bead locks. Chances are, running a cheap 15" rim will serve you the best and save cash in the process.

Sounds like a good idea! Nothing wrong with ahnd me down tires, ESP. if they are yours to begin with!! I ran 285/75/16 on my last Jeep and its a great size!

what's the width of the factory rims I got in this pic? Wondering what max size tire I can run on them. I was looking at some of the Cragar 397 all black steel rims. Not being a rock hound rig but again just something I can run on the round roads down south would be great.

Chris -
I believe they are 15x8's. I have those same rims on my 94. They can hold up to 33's with not problem.
I run 15x8's on my 91. You can get some good deals through discount tire.
I run 30's on my jeeps but wish they were a little bigger tire up to a 33.
What lift did you choose? There are differences. I run the Rubicon Express XD in a 3.5 lift. I actually got more than that out of it. It rides really nice due to the leaf pack and the military wraps on the springs. Comes with everything except the slip yoke eliminator.
For most remote dirt road driving that your talking, that is all your going to need.

Oh yeah, what is the gearing on the jeep. Check the rear pumpkin for the tag, if 3.07's you will really see a reduction is speed going up hills.

I think those wheels are 15x8... but you also have to consider the backspacing. The rims pictured have something like 5" of backspacing which keep the wheels/tires tucked under the vehicle. If your going to run a tire that is wider than 10.5-11"... I'd look into after market wheels or maybe wheel spacers if you want to use the ones pictured.

Yes they keep the tires tucked under, but you rub less on the flares with those. When you get the lift that should not be a problem though.
The ones I run under the 91 have less back space than the 94, so they stick out further.

Thats when proper bumpstops are used. Plus you don't want your tire rubbing on your springs.
I'm leaning towards the RE 4" standard lift. I'd like to go with 32-33's and the rubbing with non offset factory rims had me worried. I got money in the budget to get some steel rims with good offset so I'm not worried there but that opened up the dilemma of 15",16", or 17" rims..... Leaning towards 15" rims solely for tire costs and not to worry about dealing with trading out tires on truck to jeep. I bet I'd pay out more in the mounting fees than just buying separate sets for each truck.
