I thought I should do this in the general section until done, and then I’ll do a real write-up for the project forum.
Well, since this winter will be a tough time for me to get out on the trail for many reasons, I thought a couple of projects I can work on in spurts as time allows might be in order. On the schedule are:
Rock Sliders
Rebuild the bottom end (bearings, seals, oil pump and gaskets)
Roll Cage
Seats / 5-point harnesses
First on the list is the sliders. I’m going to start with stiffening the frame with some 3” x 3” x 1/4” angle mounted to the outside. This will run from the trailing arm mounts front and rear. From the middle (where the “B” pillars come down) I’ll run a piece of 3” x 1.5” x 1/4” out from the frame to the edge and that will be the main mount for the sliders. This will also be the tie in for the main hoop of the cage when it gets installed. Front and rear, I’ll wrap the existing “frame” outriggers with more of the 3x3 angle and this will finish the mount points for both the front hoop of the cage, and the sliders front and rear.
These projects will take a while. I imagine I’ll only get through the first two this winter with school, work and the fact this thing is still a daily driver. I’ll keep the pictures up-to-date on my picture site. I began yesterday with cutting out the crushed and destroyed passenger rocker panel. This way I can get measurements for everything and finalize the plans.
If anyone has any suggestions, I’m all ears. I was a mechanic for many years, but I’ve not built any bodies or done anything to this scale so I’d love to hear some experience.
