Wife came home today after driving the Jeep. I got in it a few hours later and noticed that the engine light wouldn't turn off. So, I went into the house and she stated that it ran fine all day during her little shopping trips. I started to trouble shoot and checked everything I could think of from the gas cap, all fuses {under dash & under hood}, and all the fluids. Jeep seems to run just fine but however was going to head up to Sedona tomorrow night w/ wife for our Anniversary weekend getaway.

Please somebody out there has to have some valid suggestions so in 24hrs my Sedona trip won't have any surprises.

You can try the turn the key on off on off on and leave on the last time and watch odometer it should give you fault code. Some require you to hold down the odometer button while doing so. Then look up code online. then remove positive cable off battery and touch it to negative terminal and see if it is gone. More than likely it is that stupid 442 code.

did you have the 30K service done?

DOG-BOY

Yes, I did the 30k service at Moore Jeep on Bell back in June. I've had no problems until tonight.

Anybody know a website where I can look up the codes that TRLR8TDTJ was talking about?

I have 30,000ish and I have the light come on and off for a few days now and then. Once it was for the cruise control I dont have. Just check your fluids and guages and you should be fine. It could be a number of silly little things.

Whenever my Jeep breaks down(which is a lot), the light has no idea. Go to AutoZone and get the code read, then come home with the code and look it up online to figure out what it means. Then you will know for sure. After a few trips to Autozone I stopped worrying.

Auto? That isn't one of the non-serious ones I have had...I dont know what that could mean as far as your trip is concerned.

I have 2 XJs and a good friend for machanic. My check engine lights have come on a few times, for no reason, it came on once when I had to jump on it to avoid being hit in traffic. My mechanic would attach the code reader box check engine light for me at no charge and while I was there watching so he could explain what was goin on. Never has there been an issue when light comes on, they are just sensitive. maybe your wife shut off engine then started it in a split second, or maybe shifted odd.
just my experience,

try battery trick I posted earlier, or have autozone clear code and then drive to see if it is really problem.

Well did the battery cable trick, no help. I'll have to see if Autozone or Checker is open tomorrow. It's time to go to work. Thanks everyone for your help. I'll post once I have more info.

Hey man I just had my check engine light come on today! I did the key on and off deal and it was a P0456 which is basically a leak in my gas cap. I re tighten it and the check engine light was off. Id try to see what the code is first!

I posted earlier that the code was P 0700 and its the Transmission Control System Malfunction. Jeep seems to run fine. I'm gonna checkout Checker/Autozone tomorrow morning and see if they're open and have attempt to erase the engine light and drive around and see if it comes back on. If it does I'll have to take it to the Dealership after the Holiday when they open and see what they say. Thankfully it's still under Warranty!!!

P0700 indicated that the transmission Control Module... ( TCM )

has a code stored, the P0700 isnt going to give you any help/idea.

Autozone's scan tool will not be able to clear the codes. stored in the TCM...

Sorry to tell you but it will need to go to a service shop... or dealer.

but chances are it isnt anything major...

it could be a TCC, or some other solenoids.

P0700 Automatic Transmission System Malfunction Detected

Possible Causes

* The presence of this code means the TCM detected a problem
* TCM related sensor has solenoid is damaged or has failed
* This code is for information only - check for other TCM codes
* TCM or PCM has failed

Setting Conditions

Engine started, engine running, and the PCM received a message over the CCD bus from the Transmission Control Module (TCM) that it had detected a problem and set a trouble code in memory.
This code sets in 1 Trip(s).

disconnecting battery does NOT reset ecm (anymore than disconnecting your home pc)... you need to have hooked up to scanner (with someone who knows what they are doing) to reset

Well, brought the Jeep to the dealer this morning and of course about a mile away from the dealer the light goes off. I brought it in anyway to see if they could find anything. I'll post more info as soon as I get some.

Some test are only run by the computers at certain intervals like so many run cycles. Your problem probably no longer exists and this is the first time your test has been run and cleared itself.

I have never had any problems with an engine light on a TJ that actually kept the Jeep from running, except the occasional dead battery.

If it were me, I would reset the computer, drive wherever I wanted, and IF the light came back on, get it serviced at my convenience.

If you come to Sedona, stop by the store and say hi!

Happy Anniversary!

Turned out to be a bad Transmission Resistor and Sensor {about $35 worth of parts}. Checked a few auto parts store and they appear to be Dealer only parts.
