When i put my jeep into drive it keeps slipping into neutral even when the lever is in the right spot. Is this a common problem that just needs a quick adjustment or am I looking at a big problem?

4.0 I'm assuming? Any noise at all when it "slips"? Does it do it when you are driving?

Also, check the fluid to see if it's black and smells burnt.

What color was your fluid? Sounds like you may need an overhaul :lipsrsealed2:

It should be a nice pinkish red color...if you burnt your tranny it will be blackened. I would check an auto reguarly it I had one anymore. At first site of blackened fluid I would replace it...and maybe install an extra trans cooler. Wheeling makes Autos hot and heat kills autos.

I never checked mine and for almost 9 months it had an open dust cover on it. It ran smoothly all the time. :smartass2:

There is a place called Ken's transmissions. The owners name is Ken. His son James is there when he is not. The shop is located on Bell road, just east of Cave Creek on the North side. He does fluid changes on Automatic's on Saturday's for $49.95. He has coffee and doughnuts:auto:.

I don't recommend flushing the tranny...my $.02. Also if your fluid is dark, changing the tranny fluid more than likely will not fix it. The reason it is dark is because there is an internal problem.

It could have helped before it started slipping...I would say it is too late.

I am just curious; What significance does this have to the thread or what I said?

So you're dust cover was off...Does that mean it got lots of dirt in there and worked flawlessly for 9 months...If so then OK...what color was the fluid. If it wasnt clean an red then you were in fact damaging your tranny and you are lucky that Semi took it off the road before the dirty tranmission went out on you. 9 mos isn't that long with slight contamination.

OR are you saying that dust does not come in through an open dust cover so it is ok to run without one? This doesn't seem related but neither does your comment.

Im confused.

well this is ****ty im thinking maybe its just low though it only seems to slip when im at an angle I have found out. Thats why it always slips at work I park on a slight hill

Get a quart of ATF and fill it properly...if it fixes it go and get it flushed. My C6 was slipping and it just needed fluid and it was fine again...but the C6 is very reliable. ITs worth the $3 the ATF will cost. DO NOT OVERFILL!

If filling it fixes it...it will likely still have a shorter life once the fluid is darkened. I expect the C6 will need a rebuild sooner as a result of my issues with it.

You also may have done irreversable damage by driving it with too little fluid in it...that will cause heat and heat kills autos.

Well, a couple things to keep in mind....

1) The only way you can really determine the damage is to tear it apart.
2) 95% of tranny related problems are not easy fixes.

HOWEVER, another thing to keep in mind/look into.....

Your vehicle is computer controlled, so there is a slight possibility you may have a solenoid or sensor problem.

Ok it was a little low and I toped it off and seems to be shifting fine the fluid is dark though whats your recommendation's im all :ears:

CaptainMorgan

I would flush it since it is shifting better and hope for the best in the future...and this time keep a closer eye on your fluids.

you can flush at home with some helpfull hands a clean bucket and about 4 quarts more oil than capacity.

pm me for details.

DONT EVER FILL THE TRANNY TO THE FULL LINE COLD!!!!!

fluid expands with temperature and this over fill created airiation leading to foam and eventual tranny self destruction.

you should flush the tranny.
if you have black fluid it needs rebuilt.
how many miles?
the flush wont make any difference if its already black.
if its black its FUBARED(fouled up beyond all repair)
