As all of you know (or should know I suppose) It is illegal to carry a gun within 1000 feet of School Grounds unless it is unloaded and locked away. The crime carries a misdemeanor offense with a felony prison term (go figure). This makes it nearly impossible to go more than a mile or two from any givin spot withink the cities without crossing a School Zone.
What I'm curious about is has anyone ever talked to any LEO's or other authorities about this. To me it seems like it may be one of those federal laws that don't get enforced unless perhaps it's part of a larger crime.
Has anyone had any experience with this?

Thanks :)

I have, apparently it does not apply when passing by (or living adjacent to a school)- only applies if you have business or intend to enter the school grounds

Exemptions include private property on school ZONE (within 1000 feet of grounds).
But walking down the sidewalk on the OTHER side of the street while carrying would be illegal.

That is why I carry concealed, so others won't know. I have never heard of the 1000' part, just onto school grounds. I always unload and secure before entering.

If you have a CCW in AZ your exempt from the ZONE (not the grounds).

I have a common back wall with an elementary school. Good thing it is legal.
