If you are practicing with any regularity (which you should), rapid fire with a .45 while acheiving hits is a relatively easy thing to do.

heres the deal...we can set up a place out in the middle of nowhere...and we can procure several Airsoft gas guns...
Then with eye protection on, we can see who will win. :D

Drugs play a big part in that. So does body armor. At least a .45 is gonna stun a perp with body armor, and give you time to put a round through the head.

Doesn't matter if you have a .45, .44 mag, .22 LR or a .500 Ruger. If you don't know how to work it, get training. Doesn't help if you can't shoot it, or shoot yourself with it.

Any firearm is better than NO FIREARM.
:)
If it is something convenient for you to carry and use... go for it. Having a 45acp but never carrying it because it is too heavy, bulky, inconvenient, etc won't do you a bit of good, but a 22 combined with some skill in shooting can be pretty damn effective.
All the above being said... I carry a 45acp (sometimes) and a .380 most of the time. Why? Because the .380 is so damn convenient to carry.
Now... if anyone on this thread doesn't have a CCW... go out and GET IT!!! :D

the only way for a .22 to be effective is for a Cranial Ocular shot...if you can make that shot...while moving, while a 250 lb 6 ft tall badguy is coming at you...then you will be fine....
As fo any Firearm is better than no firearm..well, I agree to a degree...if you are pulling a firearm for self defense, it is serious. It escalates the life or death situation you are in, your escalation should be one of greater deadly force than the badguys. The proability that you will make EFFECTIVE shots on the badguy are very slim, especially if you do not shoot regularly, and take defensive firearms training. Even the most accomplished shooter may not be able to make the shots to take down an enraged, or possibly drugged up, or mentally unstable BG.
Granted, most of the time, you will NOT need to fire...but if needed, I want the MOST I can pack into a handgun.

X2 - but never underestimate the power of a thumb in an eye socket, ripping off an ear, or a good hard kick to the front of a knee cap on an offender. :D muy importante to teach wives stuff like that because of their stature and having 7 seconds to react to a threat --- and as for me, I don't carry a gun when I'm cooking or folding laundry...
On Topic - congratulations. Make sure to take a concealment course and to get plenty of practice in. Also, make sure you purchase 2 types of ammo - cheapo for practice and hollow tip to stop whatever/whoever you need to stop in their tracks.

Most folks would want to rethink hollowpoints in a semi auto, lots of them have feed ramp problems with the end of the bullet feeding, some new units have reworked the feed ramps to accomodate, but most will not feed more than one, or not at all.
There are lots of other protection type rounds that can be used in a semi auto that would work much better than a HP.
hey shoot what ya brung.
AZG23
12-03-2007, 06:05 PM
Most all new defensive pistol ammo has actually been redesigned to allow better feeding in auto pistols. They have more curved bullet shapes all while ensuring better expansion and penetration.
ANYONE who buys a firearm, should look at different types of ammunition, and shoot what they want to carry thru that firearm. For carry rounds, no less than 250 rounds OF THAT PARTICULAR AMMO should be fired thru the pistol to ensure 100% feed reliability.
After that, practice should be done on the typical type of feed stoppages that can cost you your life if it were to happen, and you do NOT know how to deal with it. This refers back to getting the PROPER training, and practice, practice, practice!!!

I agree with everything here. My carry ammo is too expensive to shoot like that, but I ran a couple of boxes through to make sure that it would feed and reload OK. I think at least 50-100 rounds should be tested.

Its worth it for the knowledge of knowing it is 100% reliable. ymmv
Also something to consider....some guns feed ammo better than others. AND....limp wristing an auto is the number one cause of failure in an auto, so if you have weak wrists....beef em up.:pinch:

.22 is great for plinking though... I have an old Mark II that rocks for penny plinking...
CCW is awesome and on my list too... I had mine in OK for about 7 years before moving here. Nice thing about AZ though. In most case where you would want a sidearm you can put it on your hip in the open (hunting, hiking, camping, outdoorsing it, etc). Others situations (shady neighborhood at 3AM, area known for carjacking, etc) are simple to me... Why be there. Avoidance is easy. Unless you live there of course... In that case... Um. Yeah, CCW. the p22 sometimes has trouble with the cheap ammo, especially if it gets dirty as most of the cheap ammo is.
If you have a supressor on it, its even worse.
Trick with the p22 is clean clean clean, if it fails to feed, check the tabs in the mag, and the feed ramp for dirt.
The sig mosquito is so particular with ammo that its a pain to shoot, especially if you are prone to teh cheap side.
the ruger semi's will dang near put anything down the tube.
have fun and be safe.

My XD 45 compact... and yes I have CCW
My Macs... all 4 of them... NEVER had a virus, protection, problems, failure, or needed to download a handful of junk to get something to work. Love the instructions that come with something like a new hard drive... PC: 30 pages of install bla, bla, download bla, bla, reboot bla, bla, stand on your head and pray... Mac: 1 paragraph that says put it in and restart. Love to plug for Mac:)
On another note it would seem as if this is the wrong group for some drunk redneck to mess with:) I'd say we are about as armed as it gets.

Mac delivers a more streamlined expirience at the cost of flexability. If that's your cup of tea... well then you don't need a PC.

1. Depending on what ammo you choose it can be scary quiet. Aguila makes a round that is primer only, no powder. At an outdoor range when you shoot that all you hear is the hammer strike and the round hit the paper target. Because it doesn't have powder it turns your semi-auto into a single shot as you have to manually cycle the slide and chamber another round. This is actually a good thing because it's like running a malfunction drill. It helps reinforce that actions necessary to clear a stoppage.
2. I've got probably close to 2000 rounds down the barrel with out a single problem. Some P22's are very picky about the ammo they like to eat. But once you sort that out, it's good times.

I paid $200 for the pistol (bought it used), $200 for the tax stamp, and $85 for the suppressor (used, but never fired). Not too bad really, especially since the suppressor can be used on any .22 with a threaded barrel.

Darn you guys now I have to get one. Jim, what ammo works best ?
The only ammo it doesn't like is the Federal Bulk pack from Wal-Mart and Remington 22 Thunderbolts. It runs the Remington bulk pack just fine. Each time I go to Sportsmans Warehouse I pick up a different box of 50 rounds from various manufacturers. So far it is just the two listed above that have problems. With the suppressor, if I want to impress someone I shoot the Aguila powderless rounds. Scary quiet.

Hey! Bang from the first shot better than grenade (if nothing else scare the living ship out of them)! I can reload all six cyliders in under 10 minutes! :kenny::2guns::skull:

Of course it doesn't, geez!
It says "Please don't stare at the laser with your remaining good eye"

I love shooting the P22, but isn't suppressing it kind of a waste of $. I imagine the suppressor cost more than the pistol, and it's already a no muff caliber.

If you like it now, wait till you try something like this:

I think I shoot my P22 more than any of my other guns. It can be a little picky on what type of ammo it likes, but once you get that sorted out it is great.

What's the best ammo for it? I think it's my turn to get one. I was showing the wife the other day at Cabellos

Each P22 seems to have a round it likes and doesn't like. I'd suggest picking up a few different 50 round boxes at first. Or you can try the bulk packs from Wal-Mart. $12 bucks for 550 rounds equals a good day at the range. Once you get it, if you want to try out a suppressor shoot me a PM.

as I stated before, I buy the cheapest ammo I can get and it works fine.

Bought the wife a P22 cause she complained that my Beretta 92FS was too tough on her wrist. The Walther is fun to shoot, but is a bit finicky. It seems to need a bit more charge to cycle and eject consistantly.
The supressor looks like fun!
