I recently picked up a 1998 jeep Cherokee sport, 4x4,
and have noticed that when a turn a corner slowly, I here a revolution type sound coming from the passenger side rear, like the rear brakes are binding? but I took it to the jeep dealer twice, and they took the rear brakes completely apart, re-installed new brakes, power cleaned the entire area, and now it's still making the same noise?
91,100 miles, impeccably maintained! never lacked on service ever!
had one original owner before me, a 73 yr old whom never 4x4 it!

Check all the bearings in the rear.

could be a U joint on the rear driveshaft.. best time to inspect everything under the vehicle..

It has the stock Chrysler 8.25 , 3.55 rear end in it.
the noise does not happen when it's driven around town, off road, or on the hwy, just when I turn slowly, going forward or backward???

any help/ideas?

I suggest you find some local wheelers and have them help you diagnose the issue..

Doesn't look like there are many 4x4 shops in Bullhead city..

thanks for the advise!

do you know what it might be??

could be..

limit slip in the rear axle
axle bearing going bad
spider gears going bad
brake drum dragging
e-brake cable stretched, activating the e-brake on that side
broken brake hardware
bent housing

There are so many possibilities, it's really going to take somone inspecting eveything to find the problem..

is the 8.25 with 3.55 gears a good rear end?

should I rebuilt it, with a locker? new axles and bearings? since we have to tear it down anyway?

29 spline 8.25's will hold up to 33's and a locker. They are a C-Clip axle a less desireable then the non C-clip axles. There are upgrade shafts, lockers and gear sets avial. for the 8.25.

I suggest pulling the tires off, checking the brakes. Pulling the Diff cover and taking a look inside to see what might be making the noise. If you believe it to be the axle causing the noise.. New fluid won't hurt anyways.. :D

Take care
