Does $1050 parts and labor sound about right to change gears 3:73 to 4:56?

yes, but if you think you might end up on 35's or larger go deeper, IMO

x2, 4.88s at a minimum. 4.56s are great if you stay with 33s, and HONESTLY will never go to 35s, which you probably will. Where did you get the quote? Sounds about right, if it includes the gears, carriers, master install kit, fluids, seals, shop fees, labor and tax.

You would love the deeper gears. Try it, you won't be sorry. I run 37s with 5.89s. It's all about the CRAWL!

The question not asked is what do you use your jeep for? If you are a rock jock like most of us on here, go big or go home :)
If your rig is a daily driver and sees the trail once or less a month and not too many rocks, 33's are as big as you will go, you might want to stick with the 4.56.
If you were going 3.07 to 4.56 on 33's, I would say that would be good enough, but from 3.73 to 4.56 isn't that much of a jump and probably not worth the money if you are planning to use it often on the rocks. X2 on if you are EVER planning on going bigger tires then deffinately do the right geears now so you don't have to do it again. 4.56 on 35 or bigger will be worse than the stockers on 3.73's. "Go deeper" as rich said.

On the highway it's probably nice.
I have 35s and 4.88s (as low as you can go w/ a TJ Dana 30) w/ stock 2.7:1 transfer case and would love to go lower for the rocks.
My Jeep doesn't have much high-end, but does well in the rocks.
Also, if you are going to be paying $1000 for gears, you may want to save up a little more and put at least one locker in at the same time.

Don't anticipate 35 inchers but I understand the lure of going higher. Driving to Moab, New Mexico, Colorado for off roading will be more comfortable with 4:56. Don't anticipate using the Jeep as a trailer queen. Auto transmission in my unlimited was not of my choosing but there was the only game that model year. With the 3:73 and 33 tires it's a real challenge on the highway. Constantly having to manually down shift and run high RPM's.

That sounds about right. I'm running 33's but i went from 3.07's to 4.56. I love the way my jeep drives on and off the trail. I don't see me going any bigger anytime soon.

4.56 will get you close to where you were with no gains, probably want to go bigger then.

Is that the price with new carriers? When you go from 3.73 to 4.56 you will need different carriers. If you are going to buy new carrier might as well get locking one. I dont know if that quote included new carriers though.

Did the price include master bearing kits?
You will need a new carrier for the D44. unless a thick ring gear is available. The D30 carrier will work fine.

Do 4.88's, I run 33's on them for now and it is freakin sweet out on the rocks...if I had these and a 4:1 I would be inching along at a mile a day. I run about 3,000 at 65ish and I dont mind the slower trip.

Sorry, thought your question regarding the "carrier" was referring to a locker. The bearing kit for rear axle was included.

Not a new kit for the front? How many miles do you have on your Jeep right now? And where was the quote from???

Roughly 55k miles in the buggy.
The price quote is from a reputable establishment but the shop name is unimportant. If a business goes to the effort to work up a price I don't think it's fair to pass it along to their competition. People can do their own shopping. My request was simply to assure myself that the costs were in the ballpark.

Just trying to get you the best work possible, at the best price possible. There are shops that might charge less, but I wouldn't drive within 10 miles of them. On the other hand, I don't mind paying a bit more for quality work. You get what you pay for usually. A "reputable" shop might not be "reputable" for what you want done. I wouldn't take my rig to Lopers Performance for a lift install, but I would take my Stang for a new motor.....get my drift? Some shops' claim to be a "Jack-of-all-trades" establishment, but are "Masters-of-none".

I appreciate your input and the education that this forum provides. And you are right, the cheapest price is rarely the best value. I never mind paying for quality work.

No problem, good luck and enjoy the new gears. I am sure you will. Hope to see you on the trail.

Once again nobody seems to remember that the 03+ Auto trans has an OVERDRIVE. 4.88's with ANY tire works good with this trans. Also, You will not nessecarily need a carrier for the rear, and the front you are good right now. Dont let yourself get talked into it. And 1050 is a little high, not much but a little. If interested in a price, please give me a call at the shop. We can talk some more. :D

not too long ago you had this conversation with me about the lift and after a lot of thought you are dead on with this statement just giving credit where credit s deserved. proceed back on topic

This is why I am getting 4.88s. With 35s in OD I will being turning around 2250 RPMs at 70MPH. And until, while I wait to burn a little more tread off my 32s, I will only be about 2700RPMs at 70MPH. That is still lower than the 2900 or so I run right now at 70mph with 32s and in 3rd gear since my OD is useless.
