View Full Version : please help decide which lift to buy

I have a 2003 TJ 4cyl.
the vehicle is a daily driver that sees 99% of its miles on the road. Occasionally I go off road but its usually graded (crown king, Table Mesa, etc.) so I don't need some expensive super flex kit.
This probably goes against what the board stands for, but I want something inexpensive that will make it look good. Basically, the tallest lift for the lowest price. Remember, it's just driving from downtown to biltmore and back and sometimes to the grocery store.
I'm willing to run 31's and *possibly* 33's.
Any ideas or insight you can provide a n00b?
TIA

i ran a cheap pro comp 4" lift and love the springs... hated the shocks. it worked well through most of what i played on. I ran the tcase drop and didnt have an sye. still made it through some fun stuff.

I too, started with a 3" Teraflex. Nice soft springs, and a comfortable ride. With 4" of lift, you will easily be able to run 33s with no cutting. You will probably need to run a transfer case skid spacer though, unless you get a Slip Yoke Eliminator. But with 33s and a 4 banger, you are probably not going to be happy with the power, or lack there of. Gears will be in your near future, I would suggest 4.88s with 33s and a 4 banger.

Get a 2" budget boost (spacers) and a 1" body lift. enough room for 32" tires. Would probably be the cheapest set up for you, and you won't be killed in the power department.

yeah I know 33's are going to be hard to push with the 4 banger, thats why I am possibly considering it.
the option teal-j mentioned would run approx. how much?

A NOOB here also. I don't mean to hijack Duality's thread and maybe the answer to my question will help him out also.
I just bought a 2" budget lift and ordered some 32 x 11.50 tires. I was told they will fit with no problem with the right backspacing on the rims. I was going to use the stock rims at first but now have decided on going with some 10" rims.
Now I guess I need some input on what type of backspacing I need on the wheels and will the 32's clear my little lift.

I concur... I have a 4cyl with 33s. If I didn't have my 4.56s in it I would have taken out to the rez and burned it by now. WARNING - With the gears, 4cyl, armor/winch and 33s my highest speed is 65-70....

3.75" of backspacing, but you should consider 15x8 with a 32-11.50 tire. Should have no problem with rubbing. You could also run your stock rims, and just get a set of spidertrax spacers, 1.5" of extra clearance. Black steelies and the spidertrax will be about the same $$$.

2" Budget Boost 1" body lift and new shocks. About $300 or so in parts if you are resourceful and an afternoon to install it all. I'd look for some tires used here and then them on your stock wheels.

Thanks for the reply. I was really wanting to run my stock wheels for now but was worried they would rub on tight turns.

I'd also suggest the 2" Budget Boost and you don't necessarily even need a body lift then to fit 32's comfortably. You can fit 31's in your current configuration. You are looking at about $70 (Rubicon Express, DayStar, TeraFlex) for lift spacers and another $150 for decent shocks (SkyJacker Hydro). Throw another $130 or so for a set of sway bar disconnects (JKS) and you'll be very happy based upon your stated use and goals.
You can probably find a set of spacers used if you are patient. I picked up a set the other week for $30.

I wheeled everywhere like that. it was worth the tire to lose the power. in 4lo you didnt notice it at all.

Like others said, ~$300 for spacers and the bodylift, and depending on the shocks you get it can go a little higher. It would be plenty of room for 32's and you can even fit 33's if you want.
Be sure to call around to the local guys for prices. There are a half a dozen shops on here that can get you what you want.

Like they said... 2" budget boost with shocks, 1" body lift, motor mount lift so there is no need to drop the transfer case, 32" rubber and you'll have just what you are looking for. Add swaybar disconnects and this will wheel very nice.
( Option skip the body and motor mount lifts and run 31" rubber )

I got the Rancho 2.5" and 1 inch body lift kit, ran 32 bfg all terr. for 3 years with no problem. I moved up to 33's and I still have no problem. I really like the Rancho 2.5" kit. I don't know if you have manual or auto. but I did the transfer case drop at first and HATED IT!!!! Would not shift right...kept on popping out of gear ( I have a manual). I did the slipyoke/DV and the Jeep felt like it was new again. Some people have had luck with the T-case drop but I think it is a band aid fix. Besides...once you get the sye/DV done...u can move up in lift size and already have that part of your build up taken care of.
