Hello
in my Jeep when you put it in reverse and take off it has a terrible clunk? It does it sometimes goign forward but if you turn the wheel and put it in reverse it clunks bad everytime like somethign is really loose?? any ideas. I have my son over today I will try and investigate further. Of course the car lot says there is nothing wrong..

Might be your control arms and/or track bar if you have a TJ or any rear coil spring Jeep...I had a simmilar problem and that is what it turned out to be. Of course it is always hard to tell online:)

Capt Morgan is probably right. For all those that have TJ model jeeps, the overwhelming majority of the "clunking" nise has been loose control arm with a woobled out hole in the control bracket. And usually, it is on the axle end.

If the clunk happens at the same moment that the vehicle starts to move could be torque converter on the way out or just low on transmission fluid. Read your owners manual as to if you check the transmissoin fluid level when cold or after warmed up and transmission has been shifted.

The TH400 in my 78 did this for years. If you put it in neutral for about 5 seconds before you put it in reverse and this clunk stops would make me lean more toward a torque converter problem as above.

My suggestion is based on how the TH400 acts, your transmission may be different.

Next question. Is it from under your feet (IE transmission) or from behind you ( DIFF)?

If from behind it could be spider gears......Guess how I know that :)

I tend to agree with Captain Morgan and Hunter. The simple solution would be a loose control arm bolt at the frame end.

Had the same problem with mine a while back and it was a loose arm not real loose but enough to make it clunk.....T.C.

I've run into the same problem. It turned out to be the rear driveshaft U-Joints. But like everyone has said hard to diagnose on-line.
