I've got a 1987 Jeep YJ. 4.2L In Line 6. Manual Transmission. Non Fuel Injected. Plastic Gas Tank. Square opening on top with approx 6 screws that hold the sending unit hoses etc in place.

The Tank started leaking. Ordered new metal tank. Came with round opening. Contacted vendor and was advised that is proper replacement tank. Before I purchase the newly configured sending unit etc for an additional $100 does anyone know if this is absolute fact.

Contacted 4 Wheelers and they are checking but it appears they are coming up with the same information.

Is it the 14.5gal or 20gal tank?

OEM part numbers
14.5gal
tank #83502960
sending unit #53003204

20gal
tank #52002622
sending unit #53003341

Hope that helps.

Not real sure, just bought the rig but I'll have to drop the tank anyhow. The one I ordered was touted as the "official replacement".

I'll find out when I drop the tank. Have a gut feeling it is the 14.5 gal.

Jim sounds like the "offical replacement" tank was for the 14.5 gallon, and not the 20 gallon. The square topped sending unit, I would think was indicative of the 20 gallon tank. When I still had my 88 YJ, it had the factory 20 gallon plastic tank and it had the same square top. If I remember correctly, I had a hard time finding aftermarket parts for it, seems everyone had parts for the 14.5 gallon.

I have a 93YJ 4cyl and I have the small tank. The 20 was standard for the 6cyl. if I remember correctly. Sounds like they sent you the wrong "official replacement."
