Last night as we were getting ready to eat what I had grilled up, the new pup that we had gotten from Beardman decided to get up on TOP of the patio table and sniff around. Well, I come out the back door and yell to get off of there. She panics, jumps off and takes out one of the metal patio chairs with her. This is immediately followed by yelping, whining and all the neat sounds that dogs make.
I notice that she is limping and one leg does not look like the others:eek:
Forgetting everything that I know about approaching, much less trying to touch an injured animal, I reach for the leg that is pointing in a slightly different angle then the others.
Well, those puppy teeth are SHARP!!!! I get two fingers chewed in half in between yelps from Clarise (the dog).
While trying to stop the bleeding from the 1/2 severed fingers I can see that she had broken one leg.
I make a call to the emergency pet hospital to confirm that I have 12-24 hours to get her leg looked at without risk and to keep her as still as possible.
So, I go get the CLS (Combat Life Saver) bag out and bandage her up. Make her comfortable and call two co-workers to tell them I will be in late and why. My fingers are still bleeding and sore as H**l.
Fast forward to this morning. A trip to the vet with examination and x-rays confirms one each broken leg.....Set the leg, get pain pills for dog, etc....
cost.....$400.00!
This is of course the initial visit. There will be one every two weeks until she is healed up. Then there was the suggestion of maybe taking her to an orthopedic specialist!!!!!!
In the back of my head I'm thinking this is great. The holidays are here, I have presents to buy, JEEP parts to buy, AND I wanted to go wheeling and camping over the Veteran's day weekend.......My wife of course, being the good wife brings to this to the front of my mind, ALL OF IT. Informs me that I will be cutting back on wheeling and buying JEEP parts for a while!!
All I could think about was why didn't I get that pet insurance that my buddy did on his dog two months ago?????
Clarise is doing fine. She is not climbing on things (at least not today anyway), and the over all prognosis was good. Hannibal (our other dog) seems to think that the blue cast is pretty neat and I am now afraid that he may do something crazy to try to get one himself (you know how dogs are....just like kids).

Yes fish are much less expensive. No.

Sorry to hear about your new "saga" unfolding XJ, maybe something will be learned from all this. Like building a doggy fence so it cant get onto the patio and break its leg. :)

I know your pain. We just spent over 3k for our 9 year old pup... She trashed her back leg running up the stairs... she got to see the orthopedic specialist and had some pins put in her leg after they cut the bone in half and re set it... It was worth every penny.

Ok I am going to be devils advocate on this one and probably labled a D**K for this but hey. I love my dogs and if one got hurt I would take it to the vet to fix it, broken leg reset for $400.00, would have paid it in a heartbeat but taking it to an ortho to have them look at it whats next physical therapy, a leg specialist, thousands and thousands in vet bills? IT'S A DOG. Bones heal fine with a cast and its a young dog if it has a problem it will adapt they have been doing that without the help of ortho's and vets for thousands of years. Let the leg heal get the cast removed (or remove it your self) and let the pup go about it's merry life

Sorry to her about your fingers, hope the pup heals well. You can still go on the Vet run! Don't Amber out on us with reason you can't go like tales of Sasqwatch, middle east peace talks or planet alignment....
Hey Kemo - If you hurt yourself out on the jeep trail while we are wheeling, do you want us to just "put you down?" LOL j/k :D

sucks about the dog. My yellow lab loves climbing. Walls, junction boxes, benches. I was always worried he will break something but hes pretty good about climbing now, so its less of a worry. We have the insurance on both the labs through the vet place thats inside petsmart.

Sure is nice to have a sister in law who is a vet :) We haven't had a dog in a while but I think there is one in our future. I love dogs but I just didn't want to have one in a house with a dirt back yard. Yard is almost done. :)

I never said put it down but all the other needless stuff like the ortho and the physical therapy and the extra Dr. visits is pointless and only goes to pad there pockets with your hard earned money. But to answer your question, Yes just put me down

Glad to hear that your pup is doing better and also
that the cast is off...

I would hate to have to go through that with any of
my puppies...
