Last night as we were getting ready to eat what I had grilled up, the new pup that we had gotten from Beardman decided to get up on TOP of the patio table and sniff around. Well, I come out the back door and yell to get off of there. She panics, jumps off and takes out one of the metal patio chairs with her. This is immediately followed by yelping, whining and all the neat sounds that dogs make.
I notice that she is limping and one leg does not look like the others:eek:
Forgetting everything that I know about approaching, much less trying to touch an injured animal, I reach for the leg that is pointing in a slightly different angle then the others.
Well, those puppy teeth are SHARP!!!! I get two fingers chewed in half in between yelps from Clarise (the dog).
While trying to stop the bleeding from the 1/2 severed fingers I can see that she had broken one leg.
I make a call to the emergency pet hospital to confirm that I have 12-24 hours to get her leg looked at without risk and to keep her as still as possible.
So, I go get the CLS (Combat Life Saver) bag out and bandage her up. Make her comfortable and call two co-workers to tell them I will be in late and why. My fingers are still bleeding and sore as H**l.
Fast forward to this morning. A trip to the vet with examination and x-rays confirms one each broken leg.....Set the leg, get pain pills for dog, etc....
cost.....$400.00!
This is of course the initial visit. There will be one every two weeks until she is healed up. Then there was the suggestion of maybe taking her to an orthopedic specialist!!!!!!
In the back of my head I'm thinking this is great. The holidays are here, I have presents to buy, JEEP parts to buy, AND I wanted to go wheeling and camping over the Veteran's day weekend.......My wife of course, being the good wife brings to this to the front of my mind, ALL OF IT. Informs me that I will be cutting back on wheeling and buying JEEP parts for a while!!
All I could think about was why didn't I get that pet insurance that my buddy did on his dog two months ago?????
Clarise is doing fine. She is not climbing on things (at least not today anyway), and the over all prognosis was good. Hannibal (our other dog) seems to think that the blue cast is pretty neat and I am now afraid that he may do something crazy to try to get one himself (you know how dogs are....just like kids).
