Thoughts on mounting RS9000 shocks upside down. Rancho says you can but they don’t recommend it. Is anyone running them upside down? If so please give me the pros/cons of your experience.

If it is twin tube shock like I think it is you can not run it upsidedown.

Why Not?

The only down fall is they will heat up faster, and they will lose their dampening capabilities.

If you turn them upside down they give you more clearance at the spring bucket.

That and you can keep the adjusters from being snapped off while playing in the rocks, like a few of us have been known to do.;)

Monotube shocks have seperate chamber for the air and the oil so they do not mix. It iwll always have head pressure no matter what way they are mounted. The twin tube air and oil is mixes and gravity will move the oil to the bottom so the piston will be moving in little oil and a lot of air.

Here is good article to read. It explains it all.

That is the main reason I wan to flip them.

Teraflex makes rear shock mount extenders. They look like they would work good.

Funny thing is that my RS9000X's are triple tube technology.... I wonder where that puts us. I wouldn't have mounted them upside, if I was told that they wouldn't work well that way. My ASE guy over at Absolute, said no worries, run 'em upside down.... They've been fine for me, that way.

Why not just email/call Rancho?

I had a crazy idea to use Rough Country X-Series relocators but not the way they were intended. I was going to try to mount them backwards so the tab would cover the adjustment knob. I might still try it?

I mounted mine with the knob facing the axle, harder to adjust, but safe.

They said they can be mounted upside down but don’t recommend it because the fade issue could happen.

That is an excellent idea Wayne! I will probably try that for now.

I mounted mine upside down on the rear of my TJ... no problems that I could ever detect... well... except for denting them when the rear axle articulated and ran them into the axle housing :D

Or fix it the correct way, cut and rotate coil buckets , relocate shock mounts.;)

I have the 9000x's mounted upside down on the front and the back of my jeep and haven't had any problems with them. It's a lot easier to get to the knob and its also protected much better. I talked to Rancho and the guys at 4 wheelers and they both said no problem.

Thank you for clearing that up for me! Since you straightened me out on this and gave me good advise I bumped your rep. Thanks again.:)

and if your cans are denting on the lower coil bucket you can trim some of the backside of those buckets off with a grinder instead of using shock relocators. Thats what they did when my suspension was installed... still holds the coils without a problem... also am running the shocks with the cans on top to give that much more clearance.

I have already cut the back off on them but with the new RK lift I'm thinking they're still going to hit. Tonight I'm going to turn the shocks upside down and see what happens Saturday at the Tanks.
