Sorry to see this happen Jeff. You taught me how to drive in the Rocks. Also how to fix my junk when i broke it. My rig would still be sitting out on XXX or at least 5 or 6 other trails if it wasn't for you. I have always thought of you as the poster child for a true Jeeper. Thanks for all you have done and taught me. Hopefully when i'm ready to buggy out the Jeep you'll still build it. WOW!!!! Sorry to see another one leave. We go through this time and time again when the drama gets high, add Jeff to list of great people we have lost here. We currently have only one remaining founding member as far as I know that made that first trip up to CK and was part of the dirty half dozen.
Each time the drama gets high we lose good people as the club seems to take yet another change in direction that deviates from what the founding members envisioned. It is truly sad, we have lost more knowledge from when this board had less then 10% of its current size, then we have combined now.
Something we should all think about, did we join this group for drama or for Jeeps?

Let's stop and analyze what you are saying for a second:
"Each time the drama gets high, we lose good people as the club seems to take yet another change in direction that deviates from what the founding members envisioned."
The founding members didn't envision much of what you see before you now... much less have a planned direction that we can deviate from. You speak of this as if there were some holy grail of azvjc jeepdom that has someone been lost over the years... there is not.
We are now, as we were then, an unorganized group who share a common love of Jeeps and Off-Highway activities.
Now... let's move on to your second statement that I have issue with:
"It is truly sad, we have lost more knowledge from when this board had less then 10% of its current size, then we have combined now."
If I phrase this another way using your metrics:
The 3,384 new members we've added (from the time our board was only 376 members total) have less total knowledge about Jeeps than the handful of "good" members we've lost in that same time period.
Do you really believe this?
We loose good members because the site no longer meets their needs... that is indeed a shame. However, there are MANY MANY more members who recognize all of the good things that this club does who stay and try to make things better.
People come and people go as they choose. Spats break out, people get their feelings hurt... this is real life. This stuff happens in families who deal with each other face to face on a daily basis... it CERTAINLY happens when you have 500 potential strangers who visit each other via a forum every 24 hours.
Think of it this way... if you had a family that had 500 members who saw each other at least once in a 24 hour period... do you think that they would get on each other's nerves once in awhile? Do you think they would have arguments? Say mean things? Do you think some family members would choose not to visit the other members because they couldn't put up with the family squabbling?
Now... replace the family members with strangers... how much more so will there be disagreements? How many more hurt feelings.
Now... replace the face to face meetings with the sterile protected world of the internet, a computer screen, and a keyboard.
Get my point?
I think we do an utterly remarkable job at staying together and helping each other out. I think this club is absolutely AMAZING in how it can pull together to make almost anything happen.
It's all about perspective.
The azvjc survives because the group, while it has faults, is completely without peer... not because of me, not because of you, not because of any one of us... but rather; because of all of us.

Ditto. Personally I think all the whining about who was banned and who started what fight over someone saying their momma was fat, etc, etc is just as retardedly stupid as the argument that started the whole thing in the first place. If someone puts this much weight on the opinion of this group and allows it to affect their lives to this degree, well.... all I gotta say is get a life. Sad to see people leave but honestly, I can't blame them. I've left other forums due to a level of immaturity and kid-level squabbling that was annoying and a waste of time. Leaving the group to find something else that better fulfills one's needs is the appropriate response.
Again, happy trails to Jeff and best of luck finding a greener pasture or whatever the reason was for his departure. Still hope to meet him someday and wheel with him to have some fun.

I gained a unique perspective from one of the "old" members of this board at a meet and greet shortly after joining this forum. Let me tell you about it.
Bill Mish (Wildcat 455) was giving Jamie (WindDancer) a hard time and I though he was harassing her inappropriately on here. I went to a M&G that they were both attending. I think Jamie was trying to tire stack on Bills rig at the time I arrived. Watching them, I realized that they were good friends, and I had completely misunderstood the thread that they had been posting to. If you have never met Bill, he is a big, body builder kinda guy that reminds me of Jessie Ventura.... So it wasn't easy for me to approach him and attempt to apologize, but I did. His reply is still my motto whenever I'm on here. "It's the internet, not real life."
So all of you that take this forum seriously, need to keep things in perspective, a keyboard is not the best means of communication, it's easy to read emotions into this stuff that were not present in the person on the other end of the cable. This is a public forum and anybody can come or go according to their needs. I'm here to share information, some of it is relevant to Jeeps, but some of it is just for the fun of having others to bounce ideas off of.
Sorry for the long post, this forum is a great place to blog, but you are not required to read it. :)

I agree with Joe and Wayco. People leave because thier needs are no longer met. Usually it involved thier jeeps becoming dedicated rock rigs or buggys and the VJC does not offer much in that area. If we did a survey I would say 90% of this clubs own TJ's and when ONe modifiys and runs 4.5+ trails you tend to have a more dedicated group or friends that you run with.

All I can say is:
Joe; beautifully put in your post.
Wayco: Your comment is so true.
Now, based off of those two above. I remember about 6 months ago shortly after I joined. I had a bunch of people that wanted to "lynch" me, said they wouldn't help me on the trail, etc.
I wrote down the people whose comments bothered me the most on a sticky and stuck it on the monitor here......there were a total of 18 that really "bothered" me. Since then, I have met with and wheeled with many of them. I have shared views and opinions with most of them. For the most part, the ones that I have met and wheeled with are great people. I must admit that I sometimes wonder what will happen when I introduce myself in person but so far it has all been positive.
There is no way on God's green earth that ALL of us will ever agree on a specific subject. What separates us from children is that as adults, we are supposed to be able to accept and understand another's viewpoint. We don't have to like it or agree with it. Just accept it for what it is worth.
Our individuality and diversity is what makes us a great group. The common bond of Jeeps and OHV activities is the glue that holds us together. If we weren't so different.....well, I guess we would ALL drive YELLOW Jeeps like Lance and Wayco instead of nice pretty Lime Twist Green Cherokees :D
For anyone that does leave for what ever reason. I wish them well in their future endeavors and hope that they will return or as a minimum, stop by every now and then and say hello.

While I am not one of the "dirty half dozen", I have been around a long freakin time. Goning on almost 8 years. I think I am one of the oldest, active members in the AZVJC. Granted, I am always in the back row, but I have been here day and day out.
I have watched the drama come and go so many times, I can almost predict it. But I have to admit, what Joe wrote, and the path this thread is taken is about the most sensible I have ever seen. About freakin time.
Glad you wrote what you did Joe and great story to share Wayco.
I'll add to that thought. When I first started my BBQ's, I always got a kick out of the poeple who I would see chatting away. So many times I would see 2 people, who just earlier in the week were flameing each other at a nuke level, are standing there laughing and kickin' tires on Saturday.

Wayne, Bill's still a jerk I just wanted to prove I was the bigger person and take it out on the buggy instead of kicking "Jesse's" arse. Then he'd have to say he was beat up by a girl which he could add to that moment where he was getting his butt kicked by a stick at the Gold Rush Days in 05.
:p  :D
Drama is drama, I know I have added my fair share into it.
People have asked why I haven't posted as much considering it seemed I would never shut up. Well work has gotten busy with cases but it seems it has gotten rather redundant here and I begain to find it to be rather boring.
Is it just me, maybe but I'm doubting it.

We [lose] good members because the site no longer meets their needs... that is indeed a shame.
Yesterday I was talking with a coworker who has been building an airplane in his garage for the last 20 or so years. He was out at the CG Fly-In over the weekend and was lamenting about the fact that it was nothing but a bunch of companies trying to sell their stuff. The fly-in used to be an event where people got together and showed off their home-built planes and experimental aircraft. They would discuss problems in building the planes and come up with creative solutions.
It got me thinking about how much 4-wheeling has changed. There is a entire industry dedicated to bolt-on accessories for most 4x4s. Everywhere you go you see the same junk, especially on Jeeps and full-size 4x4 trucks. While bolt-on isn't a bad thing, it the 'same-ness' that I find both disappointing and irritating.
Like my coworker, I enjoy seeing a problem solved creatively rather than with a credit card.
This forum doesn't do much for me anymore except provide a good laugh every once in a while.

Ahh yet another chance to debate...
Joe as we add people and differences of opinion we add more deviations, true?
In addition, look back to the old board and you will find more posts were about trail runs, how to fix an issue and were more on topic. Here we have an entire off topic area, and not to say it takes away from the club, it does give a place for any member to go to be off topic, but the fact that we have grown to such and often it is off topic that gets dramatic it has in affect increased the amount of drama the club has.
Actually Joe there is from the original website the exact vision for this club and no where did it say drama and off topic type posts were what they envisioned. It clearly stated why the original AZVJC was formed, I wish I could find the original text, but there is something close to it on this site: http://azvjc.cataclysm.net/ and it pretty focused that the club be about Jeeps. The added off topic, anything that has nothing to do with Jeeps (see off topic section with singles, guns, quads, etc... all of which are not Jeep related). Kinda hard to argue that all those have anything to do with what the founding members were looking for, yes the club has evolved and not arguing if that is good or bad, just pointing out the facts.
Yes I do believe we have less knowledge now then before. I base this on the responses to people questions. I have seen an increase in trying to be funny, attempts to make the poster feel dumb and useless information when people ask questions. This adds to the level of drama we see here, something we did say back in the day, but not nearly to this degree. Plus back in old forum the first time poster asking a question often received a warm response and information, I have seen posts in our current day that have been inflamatory and have often offended the new poster and added no value. I am by no means saying this board is filled with people who are not smart, but I do feel and this is only an opinion based on talking to people on this board who have in depth knowledge about topics outside Jeeping that we have alot of smart people, but when we talk Jeeps they have less experience. Now that was something the founding members wanted, was to help the less experienced, but they did not necessarily want the drama of all the off topic.
Now to cap it off, I have talked with former members, and the number one reason they give for leaving is they feel the site is less and less about Jeeps and more and more about drama and that is not what they want.
Now that does not imply there is not value in this club by any means, it just is what it is. If they are all giving the same reason to leave there has to be something with to it. I agree this club comes together and is good when really pushed, but even with that there is only so much of the other stuff some can deal with, right of wrong for leaving and not wanting to deal with it is up to each person. I cannot fault them for leaving just as I cannot fault others for joining, I am just making a statement that the drama does drive away alot of the seasoned veterans that have a wealth of knowlege to pass on and the drama is usually coming from people that while very smart have less experience Jeeping. Just an observation based on the people leaving on those I see causing the drama.
It was asked by many why we lose, and since I have talked with many old timers who have left (not talked to Jeff so I can't speak as to why for him) and I was just letting those who are asking why many have said and the changes that club has seen over the years that have caused many to leave.
Let's stop and analyze what you are saying for a second:

It's all about perspective.
The azvjc survives because the group, while it has faults, is completely without peer... not because of me, not because of you, not because of any one of us... but rather; because of all of us.

It makes sense to me, the drama gets annoying...but that is how the interenet is, it gets all dramatic because people disagree and it doesn't turn out as it would in person. Personally if I ever leave the drama will be why, I never got into it in High School becasue I think it is dumb. I would hate to think I got sucked into a scene like that now as an adult.
I like the off-topic discussions and I love the network of people on here who help each other out...I will be around untill nobody helps each other out anymore, hopefully that day never comes.
I personally would like to to be able to answer more Tech questions but it hardly comes up. I get a few measurements for someone here, explain how a CV driveshaft works there, but for the most part people dont post too many questions, wrenching parties or anything tech related. I will say we have a lot of great trail runs, which is the best part of this group. Hopefully that too doesn't diminish.

I will tell you all something. But first Mr. Hunter, I KNOW you
aren't the oldest member on here.:D I drove my first jeep before most of you were a Daddy's desire. Now that doesn't mean I know a lot, but I've had lots of time to gain experience in life.
Way back when, I belonged to the nationwide TJ list and learned about the old AZVJC site from there. I am not sure what year that was, but I've been on Jeeps Unlimited since 1999 and and here since it was conceived. I belong to a lot of other sites as well. This site is evolving, as I see newbies come in and ask the same questions year after year. I also see all the different clicks and I belong to a few of them myself. As for the drama, if it gets to me I leave or don't read off topic for a few days. One of the things the internet has taught me that I didn't know before is P A T I E N C E . . . .with people. I have learned to try to DEBATE my point of view without name calling. Then it is fun to argue with someone when you disagree.
When your upset by someone's remarks.....get up and walk away.....try to make a point without bashing the other person, even when they get down in the mud.
I'll leave this site where my friends are when they pry the keyboard out of my cold dead hands!
Relax and enjoy, we may not be here tomorrow!

Maybe Jeff just got sick of his Jeep ?
;)
Yep, a family of 500 has to have at least a couple of "special ones". As well as a few grumpy drunk uncles yelling at them from the porch.

I think there is a rule somewhere...can't remember exactly where I saw it...that goes something like...
You are prohibited from calling someone retarded if you cannot spell it.
Again, I apologize for my lack of recall.

Hate to see Jeff go... At the end of the day he's a pretty nice guy and is one of the more level headed guys on the board.
