View Full Version : Measuring Current Lift Height

I'm going to ask this question here, cuase it is such a newbie question. How do I measure what lift I am gaining from my current setup compared to stock? It's a 97 TJ.

I'm thinking about putting in new shocks and springs, but want to make sure that it is worth it.

get someone with a stock jeep to measure their bottom of the frame. measure yours and subtract out the tire size and your height and theres your difference

You could just measure spring if you wanted.

My 02 is stock height and measures 19" to the base of the tub in front of the door and 19.5" behind the door due to new treads in the rear. I have 31 10.50 15s with brandy new Uniroyal Liberator A/Ts in the rear. Hope that helps, seems to me Jeep stock height changes somewhere in that date range (99-03 i think). the front springs look to be about 11.5-12" in front with the Jeep weight on them.

gimmie a holler if ya need more measurements (it's kinda hard to find a stocker around here :D)

I always just measure to the same spot on the bumper before and after installing the new springs. Of course, this only helps once you have put the new lift on, so you can see what you gained. It doesn't help you shop for a new lift. You can measure the old springs on the Jeep, then measure the new springs to see the difference, but one will be under weight and the other not.

There is no precise way to know ahead of time, because different lifts have different compression rates, you have to consider the age of the old and the new springs, and the weight of your Jeep as it sits.

Can you measure the rear springs also.

Thanks

Get the weight off the front of the Jeep, measure the stock springs. Repeat for the rear. Most new springs are not going to compress quite as much as a stock spring. They have a higher spring rate. Then check the new spring height. That should be close to your new ride height(the difference)

the stock rears springs measure 8-8.5 Weight on Wheels. As far as I know these are still the stock set up and have never been off road.

The bumpers are 18-18.5 to the ground all around
