Charlie, Travis, Rich, Johnathan and I ran CD and DS after the cleanup today. I didn't get any pics, but I know Rich's friend Mike got a bunch. Everything went well on CD, but DS got the best of Rich. He broke a u-joint on the rear driveshaft on the first fall. This was Johnathan's(heavyman) first hardcore trail, and I think he is totally hooked. I think everyone had a good time, and even with the break, we ran both trails in about 3 1/2 hours. Glad the "Eastsiders" got to come out and wheel on the right side of town for once. Too bad some of the other's couldn't make it. But 5 was a perfect amount of rigs on these trails. Very capable group, and great people to wheel with. This was my shakedown run with the new LA kit, and WOW! much more stable and the flex is great. I showed the guys some of the lines NOT to take. I actually lead these trails, not just "instigated" them.:D Have a few minor items I need to address with the lift, but for the most part, very happy with it.

Hey now!! I can tell you that I was completely stoked about how the POS did out there today. Shnipe, I still need to learn how to drive again - this is only the second time out in 8 months. I had a more difficult time with the exit then I did with the 3rd fall :) Come on Rich - THIS THREAD IS WORTHLESS WITHOUT PICS!!!!

I want the pic of me crawling that fall

I just got a new video cam so next time you bishes go out let me know and ill come be the vid/pic bish.

Did you get the panels placed on the sides? did you hit the plastic yet??

LKD TJ
10-20-2007, 09:41 PM
Still only have the panel on the driver side and I have only hit it a couple times but nothing to really test it. I have 10 bolts holding it to the Jeep and I think it will be perfect. If I have to replace the plastic every couple of years I am fine with that.

If you would quit floping your jeep on easy trails it would be good to go on the hard ones.:)

is it lack of attention or just thinkin everything is fine and doing something stupid? i have gotten on it pretty hard before an SHOULD have broken but i havent then i play around and flop (glens fault for weighting that side)

Allright, click the link in my sig for the rest, somehow I got pic's from last week in there, you can skip those unless you want to know the right lines through Elvis ;)

We started off on CD, killer trail, things went fairly smooth, some of us girls winched the ugly stuff, some drove them.

I think I'll just let the pic's speak for themselves, took me forever to upload. Another awesome day, with an awesome group of guys. Travis rig is awesome and gives us something to look forward to, but anytime I run a new trail (like today) and make it (most of the way) through, it makes it all worthwhile.

As usual, the pic's don't really show everything, plus the pic taker had a little trouble figuring out the settings, let's hope he doesn't work on anything technical for his day job ;)

Sorry about the ujoint, too.

No big deal, need to start carrying some. As normal, everyone jumped in to try and fix, Charlie and I pulled the DS, Jonathhan had a joint in his box we thought might work, he went about getting it ready. In the end, Jonathan pulled me through the last of the trail, Thanks Jonathan !

Glad to see you back out there too ! Plenty of season left this year, a broken Ujoint is nothin' :D

Lance "thinks" I'm hooked. My bank is sure I'm a junkie...but you all know what kind of "junk" I'm spending on! This was a great run, and a great group to run with. Lance did a fine job of showing me the difference between the "Lance line" and the correct line, and I learned to pay attention when those two lines happend to be the same. Everyone was having fun, and considering the trails, Rich's U-joint made for a pretty cheap date considering how much we all got! I just feel bad I didn't have the right size part in my box, but I'm picking one or two up this week. Rich, thanks for having a camera, and to Mike for getting all the great pics and being a good sport with the winch cable. I CANNOT WAIT until Moab, and it's good to know a couple of the guys running these trails will be out there to show me the way. Quote of the day goes to Lance...:)

Those Creepies and the new RE kit made for impressive performance in some tough spots. I really think you can get that third fall on CD...

The only time I ever get anxious is when I run alone, and I these are not trails I would travel solo! I used my calibrated elbow to torque the straps to 14 ft-LBS as the service manual states last time I had it off, but no wrench. Maybe my elbow is out of cal ?????????

I have never heard of tightening the straps to tight. I figured once the bottom out, that is as tight as a strap is going to get. U-bolts, on the other hand could continue to tighten. I never even considered it when I installed my front DS with u-bolts.

In the Immortal words of Samuel Jackson in "Pulp Fiction":

Exactamundo!

If you overtighten straps, the bolt strips, breaks, etc....

Unless of course you have foreign material between the strap and the cap... Not likely...

Of course, over torquing anything is bad.
Once you reach the optimum clamping force of a fastener, any additional force applied will weaken the connection, but in this particular case, it looks like the u-joint itself failed. If the u- joint cross was intact, and the straps and bolts were twisted and mangled, I'd suspect a problem with either exceeding a torque spec, or exceeding the capability of the strap and bolt's capability to hold the torque applied by the drivetrain. If any of that makes sense...

Oddly enough, failure of straps/bolts can also come from them being too loose, it introduces slop and misalignment, which increases stress on them.

You guys probably already knew that, I just needed practice typing with two fingers.. :D

THX.

It was neither too loose, nor overtightened. I turn wrenches for a living, just not on vheicles. I have a pretty good idea of what is tight and what is overtightened.

Those strap bolts are one of those things I check pretty frequently, since the one time I found them a little loose. Anyways, the new joint is in there, but I have a little bit of slop in the yoke now.

New yoke ?

Might get lucky with new straps. I think that falls in the category that stuff breaks, and the only problem was it is not strong enough for what you did.

I dont know if I want to chance breaking. The following weekend is going to be hard on Jeep. I was hoping to get out and at least make sure the fuel cell is not going to leak.

Sorry for the bump on a nearly three year old thread, but anyone know the status of some of the cool cats in this thread that are now MIA?

At least from here anyways? If it's not cool to post publicly, I read PM's.

Yes I wanna come out, but I can't break anything. I'm getting married soon and cant spend (on the jeep :) ) any money. Not that I'd be able to hang in the first place. I can however hang in the drinking contest.

I wheeled with these jokers that day in the silver rubicon orgy...

What about Jeff? He came back here for a day and then disappeared again. I never met Jonathan, but Travis and I used to be buds.
