I am interested in finding the Lost Cabin built by the U. S. Calvary, that is south of Superior off of the Oak Flats. It is by the Hackberry Creek Jeep trail, but I do not know exactly where. I have infromation from a newspaper article as well as a book to help guide the run. I am headed out early on Friday morning from the westside if anyone is interested. Those of you who live on the east side may be interested since it is out your way. If you are interested, it is kind of remote and I would hate to go alone.

Anyone ever been to this cabin before? According to the Copper Country News the cabin was built in 1871.

All they have in the copper county news is a black and white photo. It is built out of rocks. But I do not have any photos, I am hoping to get some.

It's pretty easy to find, it's along the main trail, not much left except a few walls.........let me look for a picture, would love to know more history about them if you have it.

Here's a pic from this run here:

As many times as I've been out there I just happened to notice those ruins that day. Those are on the hillside on the west part of the green valley. I was thinking they were indian ruins since there's petroglyphs out there.

Oh and don't worry about getting out there. There's a graded road that leads right to the green valley now. Very Sad! But I guess the Brits need that copper. And you can thank our politicians for allowing it to happen.:(

From the pictures in the newsarticle and the vague descritpion of location, your picture looks like an old homestead, the lost cabin is more towards Ray Copper mine and is not viewable by the road according to the article.

There is suppose to be a rock corral by the old homestead according to the article. Did you see a rock corral when you took the picture?

If I remember correct, there are a couple of "structures" like the one in the picture in this area (thats ROKCRLRs' picture, not mine). Was just taking a WAG (wild guess) as to the cabin. Like I said, I thought these structures were used by miners as I've seen a lot of structures like that around old mining sites. This site is along one of the trails into the Oak Flats area, but not necessarily the "road". The Ray mines are a bit further south though and I've never been that far south via Oak Flats. Got any coordinates ?

Let us know what you find, including pic's.

There are several rock walls out there, some about shoulder high. It actually looks as if one of the walls actually was a wall and it used to go from one side of the canyon to the other, closing off the now jeep trail that travels between the structures.

I've been out there several times and always wondered what originally existed there.

There is one road, that travels southeast kinda towards Devils canyon from the top of the powerline road - I have only driven it once at night, but possibly some old structures are out that way? I have never seen any other buildings in the area at all...and have traveled the trails many times over the past few years.

Well, I guess that it is a good thing that no one decided to go because now I have to work OT on Friday. The rest of the weekend is booked as well. If I can get a group together next Saturday (10/27) around 9:00 am, I would like to look for the cabin and run Hackberry Creek. If you know this area and would like to lead the run that would be great.

Hey Bill I also have the nth degree system.I was a little worried when they went under, but now that AEV picked up the product line I hope it will be ok. I'll post more about the run on Friday. Have you ever been to Oak Flats before?

I did the trail over a year ago.

I am familiar with the area, but no expert on the trail.

I have a book ,with GPS waypoints,of the trail.Might go out there this weekend and explore.

I have a book with GPS waypoints, but no GPS, and now that my speedo is off because of tires and gears, I just guess, but I usually get were I'm going.

I will be heading out there on Saturday Oct. 27. I will be at the turn off to the Oak Flat campgrounds at 10:00 am. Meet me there if you want to go. If not, I will still head out to explore the area. I have a yellow LJ. I will keep an eye on this thread before I head out.

Jim,

I will be there at 1000 AM,driving an 04 Khaki Rubi.

I am going to stop at Wide World of Maps to see if they have a detailed map of the area. The Wells book recommends the USGS 100,000 scale of Mesa, Az.

See you Saturday.

Jim,

Would you be interested in seeing[per locals] a well preserved Wells Fargo stage stop?

It's on the way to Superior and would require a change of the meet site.

We could meet at the Chevron, southside of 60,at the Goldfield Rd. exit.It would be a good place to refuel and it is about 30 minutes from the original meet site.

Would 0930, at the Chevron,work for U?

Bill,
The isn't a touristy stage coach area is it? I'm not going to have to pay $5 to see it am I? If I don't have to pay I don't mind meeting you there at 9:30. I am going to pm you my cell phone number in case I get lost. I will have the CB on channel 4 when I get close, but it is a hand held unit, so I mean REAL close.

No,this is a bonafide site.

It's relatively unknown. You could drive by it, and not see it.

It's an interesting side trip.We don't have to do it,I've been there, done that.

Just found out that U.S. 60 will be closed from Crismon to Mountain View until Monday. We can get around it, but will have to meet before the closure.

I suggest the Home Depot parking lot off the Power Rd.exit.It's about 15 minutes closer than the Chevron exit.Using your 1000 ETA to Oak Flats ,it should put you at Power Rd. around 915.

I am going to pm you my cell phone number in case I get lost.

I will call you in the AM.

Sorry I took so long to post the pics. We never did find the lost cabin. Got some good pictures of places Bill Ritter showed us on the way to Oak Flats. There is also a great picture of Devil's Canyon.
