I was just on my way back to work (4:05 pm) and heard Dave Pratt
plugging the AZVJC. He read part of the email from Shawn Passmore. It
was a pretty good plug, and he mentioned the website for anyone to
access to donate goods.

Break all the lug nuts loose with the tire on the ground, then jack it up and remove it.

I was working on the Jeep the other day and got to wondering how does everyone change their tires on the trail? I've got 35" Boggers and I was just messing around and jacked up the Jeep with a highlift Jack. It seems a little unstable when I get it high enough in the air to take the tire off. Is that just something I need to be careful of or is there a better way to do all that? I'm worried about trying to break off the lug nuts with a 4-way and the Jeep start rocking or something and just fall off the jack, or wrestling the tire off and it comming down, either way just curious as to how ya'll do it.

This ought to work: http://www.dana60.com/76cj5/highwater1.jpg you
can fab this yourself.

If you want to buy one pre-made you will probably need to buy a TJ or
YJ model and fit it to the CJ. Here is a pic of a TJ snorkel on a CJ:

I can't find a pic of a YJ snorkel on a CJ right now. I know some

You're right. Jacking the Jeep up on the trail is risky business. You can minimize the risk by blocking the tires when you jack up the Jeep. I also keep a small bottle jack that allows me to jack up just the tire/axel so I don't have to lift the Jeep as high. Another method is to connect you anti-sway bar disconnects to service the front tires.
Of course other things like level ground and solid surface helps too. :)

Chris,

A very good question indeed! I have the same problem with 35 tires and 6 of lift. So, I carry a small 6 ton hydraulic bottle jack&.usually less than $20 at Harbor Freight or a similar place. Although Ive not had to change my own tires on the trail, Ive used it a couple of times on another vehicle on the trail and it worked great. It can be slipped under the axle housing pretty easy and has adequate lift to raise the vehicle high enough for the new tire to fit on too.

Thanks for taking care of this for us Ross... I was a little concerned
that
the Red Cross may not leave unused materials in Payson or at least in
Arizona... it's good to hear that the stuff will stay here regardless of
whether or not it gets used for this emergency.

By the way; it's nice to hear the term "very excited" when you described
how
she felt about our pending trip to Payson :)

Thanks Again Ross,

I keep a 6 foot chain in my 'getcha-back' box so that I can chain my
axle and frame together when I change tires. Run the chain around
the axle and frame with the tire on the ground, and then when you do
lift the Jeep the springs won't droop......makes a big difference on
how high I have to lift mine.

The 2nd photo shows us a small group of jeeps waiting for the light to change to green.. imagine 10x the lineup.. jeeps as far as one can see..

Is the road to payson still a one lane road?
