My friend has a CJ-5 with anice 350 and a stock narrow trac dana44. Now this isn't the axle that came with his Jeep, his is a '79 so it came with a M20. Or so I think. I am fairly sure it is out of an earlier CJ. I know it is a narrow trac 44. That is really all. Goes anyone know of alloy shafts for this axle. I searched but didn't find any. Thanks.

Hey Cap... I am looking for/at bigger axles but was told they only make alloy axles for TJ D44s... :( Todd at Desert fab says they are made for Cherokee D44s. I to am interested to find all the axle options for a D44 that is not a TJ.
Todd(DF), Cole(4Wheelers), Andy(ORI) or Lisa(Absolute), can you guys tell me for sure before I buy an old axle that I cannot upgrade?

You can try and see if they will custom make one.
Moser and Alloy can makethem to order, just cost a lot more, and you would have to pull the old axles to make tons of measurements for them....

That sucks, I hope his shafts aren't twisted when we pull them, it just seems like 300+ hp and 33's will take that stock dand44 apart. What is wierd it they make SO many shafts for the amc20 but none for the rarer narrow trac44. I guess it is time for waggy axles f/r for him.

Just an FYI, I had Moser make a set of alloy shafts for my Wagoneer D44. If your friend decides to go Waggy, I have the dimensions and invoice number for Moser to work off of, otherwise they want you to send in the stock axles for them to duplicate.
Fortunately, several of the aftermarket axle companies have P/N listed for the Waggy front D44 chromos. I have the Alloy USA ones.

Cool, thanks. He isn't going waggy too soon or anything but he is beccoming a certified welder so when his skill are ready it shoudn't be too expensive to swap in some nicer axles.
I am shocked nobody makes these axles.

I doubt there would be much of a market for them. Back when that axle came stock in a Jeep, it was considered plenty stout. That was also when a 33" on a Jeep was considered big, and trails like the Rubicon were considered extreme. AMC20 kits have been around due to that axles inherit weakness even in less stressed situations.
Newer Jeeps (TJ's for example) are commonly running around on 35" and running much more difficult trails. There's a ton of them out there hence a good market for aftermarket shafts.

Morgan, that engine isnt putting out 300hp but is doesnt matter...
He needs to go find some axles from a later cj-7 like mine and then put in a 44 rear from a Xj... that way he can swap his arb into the new 44

Are you sure? Doesnt a stock Vortec 350 put out like 255hp stock, then with headers, exhaust and intake wouldn't it bump up a few on that particular engine...Plus I have been in it while drag racing...It's fast.
It puts down plenty of torque I would imagine at least 350ft/lbs if it was 330 stock. If not heavy in the HP...torque is what breaks parts anyways.
So you think a wide-trac dana30 and a XJ dana44...sounds like a good idea.

might as well... unless he is thinking full size...

I don't mean to derail the Captains thread for a sec but... Does superior/alloy make axles for Cherokee D44? Aren't they similar to the TJs with the exception of the mounting hardware?
There's no market for the narrow trac D44 shafts.. that's why no one makes them.
As for the waggy, XJ and Scout D44's yes there is after market avial.. Alloy USA, Yukon, Moser, Dutchman, Superior all have blanks in the proper length and bolt pattern..
I just got a set of the new Yukon cut to fit shafts for the Scout D44, has extra long spline for the special applications..
Measure the short shaft and I'll see if these can be cut down enough with the long splines to fit the narrow trac..
