As Joe suggested, the Taco Bell at Shea and 87, at 7:00am. I've
notified one radio station (I know someone) about this to see if we can
get some coverage in hopes that some people will meet there to donate or
help. If you can't be there, here is the location of the shelter:
Rim Country Middle School
304 S Meadow St.
Payson 85541
It is west of 87 and south of 260. Take 87 north to Bonita St. Turn
left (west) to Meadow St., then go right (north) to the school. I'm
trying to notify them of our arrival.
You can get a map from Mapquest.com
Any questions e-mail me.

I am quite in awe that we are doing this on such short notice. My
company has agreed to let me participate even though I was supposed
to work. In addition they are paying me for that day. The company,
AT&T, also just contributed $50,000 to the relief effort. I would
like to say it was because of me but it happened before I brought it
up;)All at work are fairly impressed with this effort.
Anyhow, I have also requested donated supplies from my co-workers.
The initial reaction has me worried that I may not be able to fit it
all in a YJ. I may have missed this, but I believe someone said
they were trying to get a large truck to carry supplies in. Is this
going to happen? If so, can information regarding this be added to
the sign-up page. Something to the effect of, "If you are worried
that you will collect too much stuff for the cause, not to worry, as
Joe Jeep will be driving a really big truck up there with us courtesy
of xyz company. Just bring it anyway you can to the meeting place
before the run"
Just a thought.

Subject: Fire Run....Interesting stats on MPG, and total fuel usage
I'm all for helping out the firefighters and those in need with
donations. I've done some calculations in my head and it bothers me a
bit when I think about the upcoming run. Think about this:
100 Jeeps
66.2 miles from Fountain Hills to Payson. (per Mapquest)
66.2 miles back to Fountain Hills.
Avg. Jeep gets 15 mpg (I get around 11 some get 20 mpg.)
100 Jeeps travel a combined 13,240 miles roundtrip.
That's about 882.66 gallons of gas.
At a per gallon rate of $1.41 per gallon: $1244.55 in total fuel use.
$9.40 per mile driven as a group!
6.66 gallons per mile driven as a group!
It's something to think about. The greenies could easily use this
against us. We'd be better served by taking local donations and having a
big truck take all of our collections up there.
Just something for you guys to think about. I'm going to stay in town
and make my donations locally. I commend everyone for trying to help
out. This is just my opinion. I don't have any intention of talking any
of you out of this run. In my mind it makes more sense not to
participate in this run.

I am soliciting my employer & co-workers for donations (Truly Nolen). Additionally, I will be bringing a couple cases of the items on the list. e-mail from one of your fellow members earlier this evening. I simply
mentioned that we would have to limit the amount of mentions due to the vast
number of requests we have received concerning current charity drives. We
have requests for air mentions from over 100 organizations doing some type
of charity event this week. It is incredible. I wish people could be this
charitable year round!! Let me know, and I hope my mention helps. I am
doing it in the 4 hour because that is prime time. More listeners! Thanks

I recently posted about volunteering and have received replies for info. Here it is, my wife watches me read some of my mail and she had suggested it, I have no contact info or any thing. A lot of the post had conflicting ideas on who needed what and what was not needed. I'm sure with all the fires going on around here lately that a lot of the fire fighters are working around the clock and that there is probably a shortage of fire fighters and that would be one thing some of us could offer that would not be what they have too much of. But since I put it out I will research and see what I can find!

Joe et al,
Keep in mind that some of us (at least myself and Randy Pella) are coming
from Tucson, so early for you is before dawn for us. I think fountain hills
is about a 2.5 hour drive for me (I'm in east Tucson, it's 40 minutes to
I-10 and Cortero). Leaving at 6:30 am means I have to leave at 4:00 am.
I'd kind of like to see the leaving time from Phoenix be a little later.
Keep in mind that I have sympathy for those without AC (I ran the Bronco for
3 years without it). I figure it's going to be hot either way coming home,
so as long as we beat the heat going up we should be OK.

Bottom line is we are making an organized effort to help not only with

I would suggest that we discontinue any further contact with the red

I just got off the phone with Barb at the Red Cross shelter and she
said that they are getting alot of drop offs on Saturday. She
recommended that we not come up, but since it's already in the works
and stuff, it's up to us. Personally, I think that we should do it.
It would be a big hit with the kids and victims as well as the town
itself. What does everyone think? The things that we are bringing
are needed anyway and won't go to waste. I really want a large
turnout of vehicles wheter or not we have alot of stuff. It'll be
good for morale to see the actual support of people and not just
large trucks dropping off stuff.

The feeling we will get by active participation in helping others....
priceless.
The feeling that the hundreds of people who see us as we travel to Payson
will get... priceless.
The memories our children will get by seeing us set an example of community
service... priceless.
The stereotypes of four wheelers that we are publicly breaking... priceless.
No matter what fuel costs and no matter how much carbon monoxide we
produce... it is a drop in the bucket compared to the costs and pollution
that this fire is causing.
I (among others) will miss you not attending Scott, but you have outlined
your reasons well and I'm sure that everyone respects them. I feel however,
that this run is a case where logic need not apply.
When I am on my deathbed Scott, It is likely that I won't remember a single
cash donation that I ever gave to anyone... but I guarantee you, I will
remember this run. My children will remember this run, and I guarantee
you... every person who sees our caravan to Payson will remember that the
only thing virtual about the Arizona Virtual Jeep Club is the name.
Thanks for taking the time to do these calculations... it is interesting to
see how much cash we have to spend to make some priceless memories for
ourselves and others.
Kind Regards,

he was reluctant to announce our trip. He replied
"You got it. I will read your note tomorrow between 4 and 4:30. I think it
is awesome. Actually, I planned on mentioning it anyway. I received an
e-mail from one of your fellow members earlier this evening. I simply
mentioned that we would have to limit the amount of mentions due to the vast
number of requests we have received concerning current charity drives. We
have requests for air mentions from over 100 organizations doing some type
of charity event this week. It is incredible. I wish people could be this
charitable year round!! Let me know, and I hope my mention helps. I am
doing it in the 4 hour because that is prime time. More listeners! Thanks
again Michelle and good luck!"
I sent him the website information so that he can mention it on air.
I hope this helps.

What happens if a big asteroid hits Earth? Judging from realistic
simulations involving a sledge hammer and a common laboratory frog,
we can assume it will be pretty bad. --- Dave Barry

Yeah but meeting new people from the club, getting out of the desert for
a while and the adventure of it all is going to be priceless. Not to
mention the thanks we will get (and the cool sticker).

Scott,
You could drive your little "Jap" car with the AZVJC license
plate ;). At least with that plate they will know who you claim to be
with. <big grin>

Kind Regards,
Joe West

I had emailed Dave earlier tonight to voice my concern that
he was reluctant to announce our trip.
