So it's been many many years since I have had to change a heater core in a 78 and up CJ7 (or even CJ5). As luck would have it mine puked it's guts out all over the floor last weekend...
Has anyone done said job in recent time??? If so is it possible to pull the job off without pulling the dash out of the way??? Unfortunately, if I have to pull my dash I'll also be pulling my 6 point rollcage out of the way (yuck) and I'm making the TM cleanup next weekend come hell or high water, but I might be using the ole' Subaru as transportation rather than the CJ if I have to spread half of it across the garage to get to the darned heater core....
And no I won't simply bypass the heater core for the time being, but thanks for the thought.... :D
I appreciate any input in advance....

You should be able to squeeze it by the dash, When I replaced mine last year I didn't have to pull the Dash...
is your jeep a cj 5 or 7 I thought it was a 7

CJ, SCRAMBLER & WRANGLER
1. Disconnect battery ground cable and drain cooling system.
2. Disconnect heater core hoses.
3. Disconnect damper door control cables.
4. Disconnect blower motor electrical connector.
5. Disconnect water drain hose and defroster hose.
6. Remove nuts retaining heater housing assembly to instrument panel. Remove heater housing assembly by tilting heater downward to disengage it from air inlet duct and pulling toward rear of vehicle.
7. Remove heater core from heater housing.
8. Reverse procedure to install.

Thanks for the pic, mine is a 81 CJ7 (well at least the heater box part is a 81 CJ7).... As we both know CJ7's and CJ5's are pretty close cousins as far as the under the dash junk goes...
Looks like I'll be having fun Saturday....
 Mine has add on A/C to boot....

That was for an 82 which is the same for 81..
I have a 82 and it is super easy.... should only take ya about 2 hours in and out. while you in there upgrade the blower motor to the chevy S-10 Blazer blower... as you know the cj blower sucks.

Already got the chevy blower motor and the new heater core (had a hell of a time finding a USA built heater core BTW, everyone stocks that made in XXXXX junk :()in the garage... But with my bad attitude I'll drain the 2 hours into a half a day cuss fest, and I am sure a rusty bolt or two will rear their ugly heads (already started spraying everything with JB 80 last night just in case)...
Once again, appreciate the pic....

Luckily Mine wasn't that bad... although this is a Wyoming jeep originally... it came out relatively easy... Although like you did I sprayed everything with Rust Off.
Good Luck and let us know how it goes.
And your welcome for the picture.... sometimes pictures help.
