View Full Version : What to do when you go over?

I am wondering what does everyone do when you lay your rig on it's side or on the top?
Besides the usual whoopin, smileing, picking everything up that fell out and shutting the engine off.
I have carbarated:( CJ-5 so when the day comes that I do go over (I am looking forward to it, but not going to do it on purpose) Well maybe...:D
I would think you would flip it over as soon as you can, Let it sit before firing it up and check the fluids or is there more to it than that.

I think I saw someone say something once about pulling the plugs to let it drain/vent. I don't know if that is if you going all the way over or are upside down for an extended time. I may be thinking of sometihng else completely, I apologize in advance if I am wrong...

I actually left my Jeep running, just pushed it back over and drove it out.

If it lays there and oil drains into the cylinders, you are correct. Good job on remembering that. It can save you from a bent rod.

get the vehicle back on it's feet.
Clean up any spills.
Take lots of pictures :)
Make sure you have prober oil level. Pull spark plugs and bump engine over a couple times to make sure there is no oil sitting on pistons that would cause serious damage if you tried to turn it over with liquid in the cylinders.
Put the plugs back in and fire it up.
Check the other fluid levels too. Power steering, tranny, brake fluid.
Check to make sure you have picked up all the tools and crap that fell out of your rig.
Oh I forgot to mention, make sure you don't lose all your ice and your beer gets warm :D

A simple flop like Lance's above seldom creates this situation. If you end up on your lid, this will become a concern. My roll put a bunch of oil in the cylinders, and I determined this with a trick I learned from Snipe (our resident flop master) Once you get it back up, bump the starter quickly in short bursts to determine if it can crank over without resistance. If it stops suddenly, you have a cylinder full of oil. Take all the plugs out and crank it again, MAKE SURE EVERYONE IS AWAY FROM THE ENGINE, it can be quite a geyser! Then be prepared for this when it does start again:

It's always a good idea to get it upright quickly, I couldn't because of the guy behind me in the photo. He was gonna help, ended up stalled there for an hour trying to get his rig started. We finally just rolled my Jeep over on his and bumped him out of the way....
Another thing to remember when things get out of control, don't stick ANYTHING outside your rig, you can't hold a 4000 lb. Jeep up with your arm or leg! Keep your hands on the wheel and when in a tippy situation, tell your passenger to hold onto something inside the vehicle, not the roll bar!

Thank you I didn't know about removing the spark plugs. Than is a great tip:D
About how much oil did you have to replace after wards?

I think we scrounged up two quarts, not sure it was full, there is no level ground on the Prichertt Canyon trail. If you are interested in the whole story, be sure to visit my favorite thread, it's long but there is a lot of good info. on it. I disagree with this a little bit, the so called trick part. If you are over, not just on the side, pull the plugs no matter what. You are going to need to pull them anyways, why risk the damage ?
The rest of the ideas were good, make sure you have tranny fluid if you're running an auto, it won't go anywhere without fluid.
Use PEATSORB on the rocks for fluid spills, but remove any contaminated dirt.
Good thread.

I'm gonna have to agree with this a little bit too. Even after we got it running, I thought that the "miss" in the engine was a bent push rod. Turned out to be a fouled plug, but I doubt I would try that "trick" again......
Just went back and read my old thread again, reminded me how we can change our minds about things like this over time.

As Wayne said, no arms/legs outside of Jeep. Although, speaking from experience, DO NOT hold on to steering wheel when going over, unless you know a good wrist surgeon....which I do!:D

Jeez Lance, are you implying that yellow paint has something to do with this? I guess Jack (1BLKJP) was right! (read his sig. quote)
Just Kidding, but your flop and my roll have very little in common. Including our facial expressions after.

stay loose with your body when you go over. Your back will thank you. If you have time to react and there are no passengers i lean over and grab the passenger grab handle. If not, I press back into my seat by pushing hard on the steering wheel. Keeps me from jostling around. Youll be slightly disoriented when you go to get out. press up with yoru hand on the ground/hardtop and help slow yourself from falling out of the seat when you unbuckle. If youre in the stock seatbelts youll have to release quite a be tension on the belt before the buckle will come undone.

I don't have as much experience in rolling my own Jeep as you do, but I've rolled and been a passenger in rolling my buddies Willy's probably about 30-40 times, and I must say, no roll is the same. The hard part, I must say, is getting the seat belt undone.

Yup. I learned that when I'm rolling the Willy's on the pass. side (I realize that this is not smart, do not try at home, blah...) on purpose, which is most of the time, I don't wear the belt b/c I go over slow and I know it's coming.
It is always safe to pull the plugs after a flop or a roll. You can also bump the starter as purposed above. When I flopped my heep this Winter, I was unable to get the motor to bump, due to oil in the cylinders (hydrolock). There is plenty of valve overlap with the stock 4.0L cam, so that you can allow the Jeep to vacate the oil itself. I was able to do this by leaving the heep in 4lo (4 to 1 xfer case) and using second gear. We gently rocked the vehicle forward until it was able to turn over the motor on its own. Gravity is your friend in this situation. I rolled the heep forward for about 50 yards (in gear and clutch out) prior to cranking it over. It fired fine once I did try to start it, no fouled plugs. This will NOT work with an automatic tranny..... Manual trannies are your friend in this situation.
One thing that no one has stated, is high idling the motor for 5 minutes, at least on newer Jeep motors. We stuck a dime over by the throttle body to keep the motor revving in the 2500 range. This cooks the oil out of the catalytic convertor..... Something that hasn't been addressed, as of yet and is a very good idea to do. It helps keep the O2 sensors clean, as well.
When I flopped my heep, I was there with an ASE trained wrench (FlexyXJ) and a guy who earns a living building race car motors. They are the ones who gave me this advice and my heep has been running without any issues, ever since.

IMHO the most important thing is to go wheeling with others that have experience. When I rolled I was not at all prepared and if not for the awesome response from the group I was with my rig would of had considerable more damage. Also if you stick an arm out during a roll they will remind you to put it back in the jeep
