im looking to buy a refurbished lee enfield mk 3 in .303

itll be my hunting rifle.

want a synthetic stock.
but the mark 3 has top wood(over the barrel) and i like that look.

anyone know of a synthetic stock manufacturer that makes that same military stock style?

also anyone have any experience with there?

i know they are supposed to do sub 6'' at 1100 yards under perfect conditions.

i know they are heavy as all hell and kick like a mule.

anyone know anything about making their own synthetic stocks?

advice on scopes and stuff?
ill need a scope and a sling.
no bipod prolly.

ill wanna have the trigger reworked to make it lighter and more accurate.
any other smithing advice or anyone know of a good smith?

Maybe you are thinking of something other than a .303 British? Some of your comments just don't sound typical for that cartridge.

I have one that was "sportorized" many years ago....the full stock was cut down and shaped to resemble one typically found on a regular hunting rifle.

I would not consider the .303 British to be heavy nor does it kick like a mule, not even a small mule, albeit the factory stock does have a brass butt plate on it.

It is sub .30-06 quality....in my opinion. A .30-06 round should be able to shoot circles around it. I would never expect a .303 to ever shoot a 6" group at 1100 yards. At 300 yards, the typical 150 gr. .303 round has lost about 35~40% of its velocity. I couldn't tell you what it would drop to by the time it hits 1100 yards.

They are an OK cartridge, I guess, but I would never sink money into one given the plethora of other firearms/rifle offerings with a much better caliber choice. The cartridge has its roots in the late 1800s black powder era.

In the mid - late 50's The Brits unloaded their entire arsenal of bolt action rifles. You could pick them up for as little as $5 bucks and I even saw some still packed in cosmoline that could be had for $25. Tens of thousands were sold and there was every kind of kit you could imagine available to convert to sporters. Most of those today are being used a boat paddles in small fishing fleets.

That said they do make EXCELLENT deer rifles in very heavily wooded areas. AND YES you can expect a solid 6" zone...commonly referred to as the "beaten zone" The rifle is short and has a solid large wooden butt stock that can beat the bejesus out of a deer. Normally one good hard swing with it and the deer goes to his knees. Then pull out your favorite gun and shoot the deer in the head. ;)

LOL.

thanks for the help...kinda...

still thinking about it based on the ammo price and the availability of the guns.
$150 for a mk3.
i just want a good deer/javolina rifle that i can beat to hell and not worry about. i dont want a nice 30-06 or 308 or 270.
i want something i can rest on rocks and trees and not worry about the stock.

i know 303 is big for a javolina but im a descent shot and ill aim for the head.
got a rabbit at 25 yards running in the head and a hare at 50 yards through the lungs and heart.
both with a remington 597 .22lr using stinger ammo with a bushnell 3-9pwr while standing.

I love my 7.5x55 Schmidt-Ruben K-31. It's a Swiss rifle that is readily available, I have seen them at Big 5, and online.
The stock is wood and usually beat, the trigger is a dream, and makes shooting it accurately very easy. Not a heavy rifle, and hunting rounds can be purchased from Hornady.
Don't know about 1100 yards though, most deer taken in the Southwest are shot at much shorter distances.

1,100 yards, 3,300 feet, well over half-mile.

FEW folks can nail a 3' taget bulls eye at that range, VERY FEW.

In fact in the Army at one time paid and extra $5 per month if you could do it at 1000 yards and they did not pay out a lot of money in spite of nearly every soldier trying it. ;)

You can pick up a enfield at Big Five, they have them all the time, sometimes on sale. or make the trip to Prescott and visit J & G Sales, they have or did have quite a selection.
You can sometimes find the enfield (isapore, india) model that is converted to 308 which is an expensive round .50/ea. on the average, but is a great round to hunt, is a flat shooter and will put down anything you'll hunt in Az. for
good luck
