View Full Version : Clutch/tranny grinding in 3rd & 4th gear.

I finally got my cracked AX15 tranny swapped out and another from a 90 YJ in its place. The only mod that I had to do the tranny that I swapped in is change out the bearing retainer to except my external slave cylinder. No other mods were done to it aside from adding/flushing it with gear oil and grease to the input shaft.
I did not replace my clutch at the time of the swap since it hadn't been giving me issues before. While pulling out the old tranny I did nick one of the fingers, but it did not look to bad.

Now that some history is up, here's my problem.
The tranny shifts fine going into 1st & 2nd gear, but it grinds going into 3rd and to a lesser extent 4th gear. 5th gear does not grind and reverse is fine as well.
I've bled the clutch (which didn't seem to help much) and the pedal feels a bit firmer, but it’s still softer than I'd like.

My question is, is the clutch at fault or is it possible that the syncros in 3rd and 4th gear are bad?

Thanks,

I'd say Syncros

If it was a clutch issue you would grind some in all gears..

You can also try double clutching it see if it improves, if it does, it could be that your master could be leaking internally or the slave, but since you said its only 3rd and 4th is sounds obvious that it is the synchos.

I was afraid of that!
I can sometimes massage it into 3rd without grinding, but I have to shift it very slowly.
Anyway to fix it without having to do a complete rebuild?

EDIT: That was a dumb question.:o What I was wondering is if a heavier weight oil would help. Right now it has 75w-90 Syn in it.

probably not... but try adding regular atf to lube everything, run it a little then drain and refill... I am not guaranteeing anything of this option of trying to help it some, but usually once their gone their gone.

but with out rebuilding it only thing you can do it double clutch it. to slow the input speed down before you shift it... but that gets old real fast, your better off rebuilding it.
