Actually Fred, you misread the post. David said his co-workers
wanted to give him money, and HE would not accept it. I would prefer
not to get money donations from people also. If they want to donate
money they can do it themselves, so they know the money is getting

Subject: U.S. FOREST SERVICE TO SEVERELY RESTRICT OHV USE
Five out of the 6 National Forests in Arizona are considering new
rules for use of off-highway vehicles on 9.5 million acres of public
lands in Arizona. Of the 5 Alternatives being considered by the
Forest Service, the preferred alternative for Arizona is a complete
yearlong ban on all cross-country travel. This is the proposed plan
amendment, Alternative #4. Off-highway vehicles will be severely
restricted to use on designated trails only. The actual trail
designations may not come for several years. The 5 National Forests
to be affected by this ban include: the Apache-Sitgreaves, Coconino,
Kaibab, Prescott and Tonto National Forests.
Cross-country travel is defined by the Forest Service as travel off
of or away from open roads or trails. The Forest Service has noted
that user created trails, particularly in areas adjacent to
residential development, lack engineering and environmental elements
of design and they will be shut down with the issuance of this new
policy.
The implementation of this policy in Arizona will create a precedent
for other National Forests throughout the U.S. This is a policy
decision that has the potential to affect everyone.
Throughout Arizona, comment was received by the Forest Service in
response to its March 27, 2001 Notice of Intent to prepare an EIS.
The Draft EIS containing the 5 Alternatives and the Proposed Action
Alternative is now in the final drafting stages and it is anticipated
that it will be released by late July 2002. Opportunity to comment on
the Draft EIS and Proposed Action Alternative #4 will occur at that
time. There will be a 45 day comment period.
The second part of the National Forests new OHV management strategy
to be undertaken will be the local site specific planning that will
occur following the final EIS. The site specific planning phase will
then designate the trails open for recreational OHV use.
First your riding areas will be closed outright! Then the Forest
Service will consider which trails to designate for OHV recreational
use! As you know, this can be a long process.

If you want to donate money for the fire relief in Arizona, get a hold of a
local organization that is involved in the relief efforts. Giving money to
the Red Cross does not guarantee it will be spent helping Arizona fire
victims. Last year after 9-11, millions of dollars that were donated to
the Red Cross ended up funding other emergencies and relief efforts not
even related to the Trade Center catastrophe. I'm not saying that the
money you donate won't help somebody, it just may not be helping the
victims of the Rodeo / Chedeski fires.
I like to know where my hard earned $$ is going. If you don't have or
don't want to donate $$, try donating your time. In times such as these,
volunteering yourself to help is just as valuable as money. Besides, if
you donate your time, you know exactly what it is that you are helping.

I jumped at Eloy 5 or 6 years ago. If you are looking to get certified then you have to make a couple of static line jumps first - that's where the chute pops as soon as you jump out of the plane. If you want to go just to experience it, go for tandem where you get a minute or two of free fall, and a jump master who tries to do things so he can tell stories about how newbies react. Scariest moment for me: realizing I had just jumped out of an airplane, and it took less will power to do than rolling out of bed in the morning!

their fingers elsewhere. The guy from SC pointed at the timber folks. And

So what's my point? My point is that as the politic fire picks up, we are
going to start hearing a lot of emotions, stretched truths, and white lies.
The real truth will lie somewhere in the middle. In the end, all that really
matters from here on out is that we do the right thing for the forest. And,
at this point in time, it seems very clear to me that active forest management

cross-country travel. This is the proposed plan amendment, Alternative #4.
Off-highway vehicles will be severely restricted to use on designated
trails only. The actual trail designations may not come for several years.
The 5 National Forests to be affected by this ban include: the
Apache-Sitgreaves, Coconino, Kaibab, Prescott and Tonto National Forests.
Cross-country travel is defined by the Forest Service as travel off of or
away from open roads or trails. The Forest Service has noted that user
created trails, particularly in areas adjacent to residential development,
lack engineering and environmental elements of design and they will be shut
down with the issuance of this new policy.
The implementation of this policy in Arizona will create a precedent for
other National Forests throughout the U.S. This is a policy decision that
has the potential to affect everyone.
Throughout Arizona, comment was received by the Forest Service in response
to its March 27, 2001 Notice of Intent to prepare an EIS. The Draft EIS
containing the 5 Alternatives and the Proposed Action Alternative is now in
the final drafting stages and it is anticipated that it will be released by
late July 2002. Opportunity to comment on the Draft EIS and Proposed Action
Alternative #4 will occur at that time. There will be a 45 day comment
period.
The second part of the National Forests new OHV management strategy to be
undertaken will be the local site specific planning that will occur
following the final EIS. The site specific planning phase will then
designate the trails open for recreational OHV use.
First your riding areas will be closed outright! Then the Forest Service
will consider which trails to designate for OHV recreational use! As you
know, this can be a long process.

My wife told me that she heard on the news this morning that either the
Red Cross or the Salvation Army (not sure which) is saying they don't
want any more supplies. Instead, they want money. I'm guessing they've
got more than they need of some items and not enough of other items. So
the money will let them best fulfill their needs.
I think we need to check with the Red Cross and see just what they need
(or will be needing) and respond accordingly.

If there are others in Tucson who are thinking of donating supplies for
the run this weekend but can't make the trip, I'm thinking about going,
and could take your supplies for you. If there is interest I'll be
taking the Bronco, so there is lots of room for supplies. I have the
time to go, but not the money to furnish too many supplies, so there is
no way I'll fill my truck. Call me at 241-2597 or e-mail me at

I work for a trucking company. I asked my boss today if we could donate a truck to bring supplies to some of the relief sights. He said it would be OK but had to get the final OK from the big boss. So if all goes well I'll have access to 48' semi or what ever smaller size they might need. I know last night they (the company I work for) brought 6 pallets of water up to eager but that was in route with one of the normal routes. What I want to do is on my own time, day off and borrow the truck that is why he has to get the OK first.
My boss said he would try to get in contact with the person that that he talked to yesterday at the salvation army and see what kind of delivery help they needed and were it needs to go to and try to get back to me tonight.
Is anyone interested in helping load the trailer if this goes through and they need the help? If there is enough people interested maybe you could car pool up and help unload also? I would be good PR for the club.

Fred,
I think you make a good point - that being there are always at least
two sides to every story. I suspect the government folks may be
stretching the truth a bit. But I don't possess the knowledge to say
for sure. I'm also even more suspiscious of the greenies in what
they're saying. I've heard their interviews the last day or two.
There is a lot of semantic mumbo-jumbo going on. The governor mentions
"lawsuits" and the greenies reply there weren't many "lawsuits". But then
I read about "administrive appeals" that have been filed. Lawsuits?
Administrative appeals? Sounds like a bunch of slick wordsmithing to me.
I'm sure there is a good reason that the greenies are the ones on the
defensive right now. I can only shake my head when I hear them saying
they are in favor of thinning the forests while, at the same time, they
are the ones pushing for more wilderness and roadless areas which would
prevent the thinning from happening in those areas. That just seems
bogus.
My 2 cents.

not to get money donations from people also. If they want to donate

If there are others in Tucson who are thinking of donating supplies for the
run this weekend but can't make the trip, I'm thinking about going, and
could take your supplies for you. If there is interest I'll be taking the
Bronco, so there is lots of room for supplies. I have the time to go, but
not the money to furnish too many supplies, so there is no way I'll fill my
truck. Call me at 241-2597 or e-mail me at mitchwoodward@h... with

will be at the Tucson Rough Riders meeting tonite if you want to meet me
there.

Subject: U.S. FOREST SERVICE TO SEVERELY RESTRICT OHV USE
Five out of the 6 National Forests in Arizona are considering new rules for
use of off-highway vehicles on 9.5 million acres of public lands in
Arizona. Of the 5 Alternatives being considered by the Forest Service, the
preferred alternative for Arizona is a complete yearlong ban on all
cross-country travel.

Yesterday I saw an interview with some dude from Sierra Club. And there was
an E. J. Montini article in this morning's AZ Republic containing quotes from
someone from some other green group. Of course, the green folks are pointing
their fingers elsewhere. The guy from SC pointed at the timber folks. And
to the careless humans who started the fires. Gee, what a surprise.
So what's my point? My point is that as the politic fire picks up, we are
going to start hearing a lot of emotions, stretched truths, and white lies.
The real truth will lie somewhere in the middle. In the end, all that really
matters from here on out is that we do the right thing for the forest. And,
at this point in time, it seems very clear to me that active forest management
is the right thing to do.

Poverty sucks. Anyways, with all these closures and restrictions and my finacial situation keeping me close to hame, maybe I should trade the jeep in for a civic. I just in the last year got interested in recreational activities and have had more fun than I could possibly imagine and with all that is going on, it looks like withen the next five years, Jeep is something you see in a museam.

Scariest moment for me: realizing I had just jumped out of an airplane, and it took less will power to do than rolling out of bed in the morning!

should be allowed to clean up the mess.

Excellent idea. As I told everyone here. Every little bit helps.

Call me at 241-2597 or e-mail me at
mitchwoodward@h... with questions, or to arrange meeting up to
give me supplies for the trip. I will be at the Tucson Rough Riders
meeting tonite if you want to meet me there.

That just seems
bogus.
My 2 cents.
