The most alarming statistic in that article was the fact that 40 percent of the Forest Service's annual budget is spent defending itself against environmental groups. That's astounding and absolutely absurd. Just think of all the good that could be done with all that money that is wasted because of frivolous lawsuits filed by the sierra club and other eco-nazis.

I just taped a local news report with some "greenies" asking what's happened to the millions and millions of dollars that have been allocated to the FS for just those purposes. That is controlled burns and manual thinning around occupied areas of the forest.

Don't know what y'all are seeing on the news up in Phoenix, but here, in
Tucson, that are saying that they DON'T need food. They have more than they
know what to do with (food that is) at all of the shelters. They do need pet
supplies, and things like gloves, socks, lip balm, toliet items, etc...
Also, whoever said that they don't need cash, is jsut flat wrong. The Red
Cross was on the news, saying, YES they need and will take money. They also
didn't want a lot of people traveling around up around the areas, as it's
congested enough as it is. The Red Cross can furnish the names and locations
of drop off areas for supplies and money.

"Skydive Arizona" they are located in the Eloy airport. I do not sky dive but they are a customer of ours. I have been out there several times and just enjoyed watching. They have a school that teaches and they can certify you. Or as a friend of mine did a short class and a tandem jump with the instructor, just to see if you can stomach it. They have held national dive competitions they also. I have seen people from many countries come to use their facilities. And for you single guys, the chicks are a nice sight, there is a weight limit to the sport. :)

Fred,
Perhaps the millions and millions that were allocated were diverted to the courtrooms. According to Sentator Kyl, up to 40% of the USFS budget has been spent in defending lawsuits from the anti-recreationists.
It is interesting in that the URL that I included in my letter to the Sierra Club this morning seems to be no longer linked on their site. It would appear that they removed the link to that page (although the page itself can still be directly accessed with the URL). If it is still linked, then they have reshuffled their web pages around so it is not nearly so easy to stumble across. By the way, that was the page that said forest fires do not pose a major threat to home and communities.
What do you know&.I honestly believe I made a difference!

Yup, the 40% has been mentioned several times already. The more interesting parts of the articles are things like:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
For example, forest officials said prescribed burns in the northern part of Hop Canyon, southwest of Show Low, could have slowed the growth of the Rodeo fire.
But political wrangling prevented the burns because residents north of Hop Canyon did not want smoke and ashes coming into their area, said Chaden Palmer, a Forest Service spokesman.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Note, in this case it's not the "environmentalist" that prevented the controlled burns, but nearby residents. This is what I've seen, much more often than not.
As I mentioned in a previous e-mail, just a bit ago, the local news just interviewed some "greenies". They brought up a good point, as does the article. The National icon of Smokey Bear (Only You Can Prevent Forest Fires), has probably done more to hurt things than any other single act. People came to associated fires (forest fires) with bad, and all fires were bad. The FS has a century (almost) behind them of putting out everything, and now, we are paying for it.
From the article:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
National policy on fire suppression began to shift after the "Yellowstone" fire in 1988, and with greater vigor after the Los Alamos, N.M., fires two years ago.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
An interesting thing about the Yellowstone fire. That park is now the healthiest that it's been in almost remembered history. The park was fire starved, as is much of our National Forest, due to the FS policy of 100% fire suppression.
South of Tucson, last month, was a pretty large fire down in the grasslands, and it actually got into the Army Fort down there a little. Now that it's out, it turns out to be another example of a fire starved area, that the fire was good for. With decades of no fires, the grassland was experiencing an influx of woody shrubs and tress, primaryly mesquite, put also pinion and oak. Fire, naturally, keeps these woody invaders out of the grasslands, and it (the fire) doesn't hurt the grassland.
Anyway, the massive fire up around Show Low is a tragidy, and my heart and money (I've donated what I can, and will continue) go out to the victims. I just hope that we all come away wiser, and without any knee jerk reactions from this. The forest will be fine. Will we ??
Best,
Fred

I was into the shop, with my TJ, last Thursday. The mechanic was
telling me about the Dodge Intrepid (sp?) he was working on. He said
in order to get the PCM fixed they had to send it, the PCM, to
Detroit. Then when the PCM got back they had to take, tow, the
vehicle to the dealer to have the chip reprogramed for that PCM. Then
the mechanic could make sure everything was done correctly. He told
me that this procedure was only of DC vehicles. All the others share
information with the little guys, as such it doesn't take weeks to
get stuff done, more like days. He finished up by saying how
customers get upset with him, when there is nothing he can do about
it.
I hope the bill passes also.

They have a school that teaches and they can certify you. Or as a friend of mine did a short class and a tandem jump with the instructor, just to see if you can stomach it. They have held national dive competitions they also. I have seen people from many countries come to use their facilities. Fred,
Perhaps the millions and millions that were allocated were diverted to the courtrooms.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
For example, forest officials said prescribed burns in the northern part of Hop Canyon, southwest of Show Low, could have slowed the growth of the Rodeo fire.
But political wrangling prevented the burns because residents north of Hop Canyon did not want smoke and ashes coming into their area, said Chaden Palmer, a Forest Service spokesman.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
National policy on fire suppression began to shift after the "Yellowstone" fire in 1988, and with greater vigor after the Los Alamos, N.M., fires two years ago.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Will we ??
Best,
Fred

meanings are more complex and undocumented, so only auto dealer repair
shops
can easily find causes of some problems. U.S. Senate S.2617 and House
H. R.
2735 would force auto manufacturers to share the codes. Sen. Wellstone
says
that manufacturers are acting like a cartel, blocking independent shops
and
car owners. But GM is being helpful."

I certainly hope this/these bills pass because the auto manufacturers
are
also shutting out the backyard mechanic or the jeep owner who is stuck
in the middle of nowhere because the computer is refusing to cooperate
and start the engine.

Having jumped at several of the local DZs I would have to agree that
Skydive Arizona would be the best place to start. Great facilities
and staff! Very professional, but very fun! Be forewarned though,
it is highly addictive and if you think Jeepers are a rough and wiley
bunch just hang with some skydivers for a while! We tend to think a
bit differently...no actually...alot differently :)
