While Flagstaff certainly does have cooler temps than Phoenix, Ive always wondered how much cooler it was once you were sitting in the middle of 100 square miles of black heat-absorbing volcanic rock. My first and only visit to the Cinders was on a Memorial Day weekend a couple of years ago&.it got HOT up there, IMO. (silly me&.I forgot&.its a dry heat!)

I have heard that gloves, toiletries, gatoraide and the like are
needed. I will continue to call around today (if work doesn't kill me
first) to find out what supplies are needed and where. Any
assistance is this department would be greatly appreciated! Thanks
and more to come.

Thats right............. don't forget that "dry heat". I'm heading to Orlando FL in a couple of hours so I'm definitely going to be dreaming of the "dry heat". Last time in Florida, I couldn't breath...............

Re Flagstaff though.............. not too many years ago we were at the Cinders over the 4th, sitting atop one of the "hills" above Flagstaff ..... looking DOWN upon the fireworks and FREEZING the back sides!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It was COLD waaaaaaaaaaaaay up in dem dang hills!

S.
BTW: Stu, I forwarded your letter (Sierra Club) to a few "agency" friends............... they think it was GREAT. Feel we need MORE like this................. also they agree that the "shady agency folks need to be shut down, fired, shot, or retired"............. They agree there is a "new game" out there and there are way too many "old timers" that cannot get with the plan. They have been allowed to do their own thing for so many years it's easy! We all have to remember........... there really are agency people that ARE on our side!!................. not as many as they'd like to think, but it is starting.

When looking at the current situation don't forget the other fire that is just up past our own problems. I am sure many of us have spent time on Missionary Ridge if not just the mountains around Durango. They need our help to, if not just some strongly worded letters. A house I used to live in on CR 250 (east animas road) is gone, so lets not forget that people are loosing there houses and dreames up there to.

One time when we were going to run the Log Corral trail, I called the forest service
to ask about where to cross the Verde. I did this because I was aware there were
bald eagle nesting areas along the east side of the Verde that were closed to vehicles.
Instead of telling me I couldn't cross, he told me that there were prefered locations
for crossing as well as closed areas. He expressed no concern about contaminating
the water. So it seems that "crossability" depends on whether or not a particular
area has been closed - not on some law.

I heard last night that the FAA has granted the fire fighting operation full
access meaning that the airspace is closed within an area 5 miles outside
of the fire's boundaries and up to a ceiling of 10,000 feet. Sounds like
they are going to be flying a lot of bombers and helicopters in there.
Hopefully that will help a lot.

It also means that the news choppers won't be able to get in there and

I'm sure just seeing a caravan of 20 or more Jeeps would provide some
amount of support to the victims at a relief center. It would demonstrate
that others - strangers - care about their northern neighbors. Of course,
the supplies will also obviously be a big help.

I'd like to suggest adding children's toys to the supplies list.

Since the Sierra Club etc.. refuse to respond I will draft a response
similar to what they would say. For amusement only!

"The Arizona and Colorado fires are devestating the natural
environment. Increased urban sprawl along with the poor management
techniques utilized by the forest service have led to the tragic
destruction of what once was a prestine forest. The SC has tried for
numerous years to change the clear cut and slash and burn methods of
forestry which cripple these forests. Logging companies and the US
forest service design logging techinques solely around the idea of
profits. They profit while the animals and trees suffer. NO MORE.
Simply clearing the forest of litter and downed fuel, which will
destroy the forest ecology, will not stop these devestating fires.
No, more must be done! In addition to your contibutions, we must
unite and remove any inclinkling of human presence in these forests.
Mother nature doesn't destroy the forest, the us forest serice does.
These fires are the direct result of OHV and the destruction
associated with outdoor activity and careless campers. It doesn't
matter that I am sitting on a wooden chair at a wooden desk, we don't
have to see the big picture. This is do what feels correct regardless
of any logic. So unite and send us money.

Its the best I can do in five minutes at work with the bosses around!
Would you expect anything different from the SC?

In your faq section you state that: Forest fires pose a major threat to home and communities.
False
Homes and communities can take numerous precautions to reduce the threat of forest fires.

I bet that the Sierra Club will have a press conference soon so that they can let all the people here in Arizona whom have lost their homes know that "Forest fires pose a major threat to home and communities... false; Homes and communities can take numerous precautions to reduce the threat of forest fires." I'm glad that your organization now has proof and evidence that forest fires pose no threat to homes and communities.

I believe that the most important precaution to prevent forest fires is by thinning the forest, and allowing roads to serve as fire breaks and access to fight fires. Your organization has done everything in its power to prevent proper forest management.

Now I think it is time for your organization to do what is right. The forest service estimates that these fires are taking approximately 1 million dollars a day to fight. When can we expect the donations to pour in from your ENVIRONMENTAL group? If this is not an environmental emergency I don't know what one is. There are displaced families who will have no home to go back to, firefighters risking their lives, and the general public watching helplessly in horror...at the enormous fire and at your organizations lack of action.

Please keep in mind that the tide is shifting. At this very moment eyes are opening across the globe from citizens to government officials. Your and organizations like yours are being publicly blasted for preventing proper forest management. Now you are in the limelight, but for different reasons. The choice is now yours to show the world what your really about. I hope and I pray that you will take some responsibility for these out of control fires and show your selves to be real environmentalists.

Sincerely,

Mike Acuna Jr

Linda - Great Willys Wagon Project.

I built a 1955 back in about 1977-1980. I put Chevy 12 bolt rear and Dana
44 Front, 327 Chevy engine with T350 Automatic and a NP205 Transfer case. I
used Rancho 2.5" leaf springs and did a spring over on it before I new what
to call it. My buddy and I made our own cross over steering arm and
everything. I ended up putting all Stewart Warner guages in it, saginaw
steering, updated steering column with the ignition in the column, and 1969
Mustang bucket seats. I put Chrome Spoke wheels and (WOW!) 33-12.50 x 15
Summit Wide Climer tires on it! We even put on some custom 3" tube bumpers
front and rear. What a great project! ALL this was done in my parents
gravel driveway in Tucson!

Steve at the Willys Works in Tucson is a great source for parts and
knowledge.

If anyone knows where this truck is - I sold it in Tucson back in the early
1980's - I would love to find it. It was white in color back then.

Linda's mail:

Brought it home yesterday. Thanks RandyS for use of the trailer.

As a resident of Arizona who has also lived in several western states, I too would like to see the Sierra Club accept responsibility for their actions and to implore your organization to work with, rather than against, the people of the United States to ensure that forest management policies protect the forests, the animals, the thousands of people to use the forests, and the thousands of people who live in and around the forests from catastrophic conflagrations such as the ones here in Arizona and Colorado, as well as the ones that were experienced in Montana and California in years gone by.
Stop the lawsuits and rhetoric, help us save our environment!

I am writing this e-mail to request that you help supply resources and financial support to the displaced people in Arizona and other SW states who no longer have a home to live in because of the wild fires.

Both the local and national media channels are reporting that the years and years of anti-forest actions, for which the Sierra Club and other anti-recreationist organizations are so well known, are the major contributing actions to the severity of these wild fires.

The following true/false question is an example of the misinformation you spread via your web site: (http://www.sierraclub.org/logging/report01/quiz_answers.asp )

True or False:Forest fires pose a major threat to home and communities.

Sierra Club’s Answer:Homes and communities can take numerous precautions to reduce the threat of forest fires.

A quote from today’s MSNBC:

“The fire has destroyed at least 186 homes, Paxon said, including 116 homes in towns just west of Show Low. The other 70 were in Heber-Overgaard, a community 35 miles west of Show Low that was overrun Saturday.”

Perhaps you would like to take a trip to Heber-Overgaard or Show Low, Arizona and explain your ridiculous forest management concepts to the 25,000 Arizona residents who have fled from the fire’s path. With over 300,000 acres burning and more still to come, a half dozen communities have been or are still threatened by the devastation of these uncontrollable forest fires. And this is just inArizona.

Years and years of your “don’t cut the trees because you’ll go to hell” preaching and millions upon millions of dollars wasted by our government agencies defending themselves from your ridiculous lawsuits have put us where we are today. Are you aware that your lawsuits have caused as much as 40% of the US Forest Service’s budget to be wasted in the nation’s courtrooms rather than being used to provide resources for the thousands of brave fire fighters who are trying to do their job here in Arizona?

Oh, before I forget, I want to personally take the time to thank your organization for all the pain and suffering it has caused the people here in Arizona. Rumor has it that the families who have lost their homes in the blaze are a bit too preoccupied to extend their heart felt thanks to you right now. I am sure you understand, true (or false)?

I believe it is time to put your millions were your cake hole is and extend a helping hand to the people whose lives you have shattered. Charity begins at home, so the saying goes. Given the fact that you have “members” living here in Arizona and all over the southwestern US, you can’t get much more home than that, true (or false)?

For once in your pathetic lives, do something that will actually help someone. Step up to the plate and accept responsibility for the decades of misdirection you have shoved at the people of our great country.
