I never use my sway bar and my steering hitting one of them. One side is pretty abused, but functional.

Must take factory sway bar too

Joe,

It is my understanding it was a signal fire. It did not become a
destructive fire until they left. Is there a law against helping someone
leave the scene of a crime (the crime being leaving a fire burning)?

If you want to play the "if" game... If it were me stranded in a tinder
box I would have found another way to signal the pilot. Car mirror, run
around naked in a clearing (If I were female) :), lifted the hood of the
truck/car, wrote SOS or HELP with rocks, brush and/or wood.

If I were a pilot I would not have landed in a place that might fan the
flames which would have brought danger to the stranded, pilot and
aircraft. Not to mention the unforeseeable lives that a forest fire can
endanger.

None.

There is no law against a pilot leaving the scene of a fire... and in
fact, speaking as a pilot... it is a good idea NOT to hang around a
fire. If the pilot was a responsible person (as I suspect she/he was),
they would have radioed Prescott Flight Services and reported the
fire... and that is the limit of their responsibility. If I was that
pilot, I too would have done my best to pick up a person if I thought I
could do it safely... to me... one human life is worth infinitely more
than hundreds of thousands of acres of forest. If the choice is a life
or the forest... I'd go for the life every time.

I heard a similar interview with Kyl on TV. I think he said that court costs
due to environmentalist law suits eat up about 40% of the forest service's
funds.
That's 40% that would have been used to manage MY public land. This really
pisses me off.

Until they show the vehicle and its location, I don't agree with the "four-wheeling"
assessment. Most likely, they have a stock Blazer or Durango and were traveling
down a forest road. That's not an illegal activity and I don't think it's the kind of
activity people think of when talking about those "four wheeling IDIOTS".
Also, it wasn't their supposed four wheeling activity that started the fire - anyone
doing anything in the forest who becomes lost may decide to start a signal fire. So,
I think this fire gets chalked up to stupidity and is disassociated with four wheeling.

Joe,

I think that is an assumption on your part. It's really a matter of
interpretation I suppose. The fact that the guy threw his cigarette
but out his window does make him an idiot in my opinion. But that has
nothing to do with four wheeling. The use of the term "four wheeling
IDIOT" employs a stereotype about four wheelers. Those who
choose to use generalizations like stereotypes have less credibility
in my book.

Yeah, a burned helo and the resulting "extra" stranded crew of
the crispy bird would have made a real statement about the average
intelligence of America, right? "We wanted to do the right thing,
like Wilford Brimley always said about Quaker Oats, and put out that
danged fire. Well, it was a little bigger than a water bottle and a
half-full bladder could overcome, so we decided to try and talk it
into going out. Once we realized that wouldn't work, well, the fire
had crept too close to the helicopter for us to get into it and take
off. So we watched it burn up, and boy howdy, that there AV gas sure
burns purty hot! And, lemme tellya, it REALLY adds to a wildfire. I
hope Channel 5 don't take the cost o' that whirlybird outta my pay!"
And there you have it! LOL!

Hi Roger,

It is an assumption and I find the author's usage of the term "Idiot" to be
both accurate and appropriate in this instance.
I agree that the term "four wheeling" could have been left out since the
author had no idea if the guy actually ever took his rig offroad. And last
but not least, I too dislike stereotypes and I am thinking the author of the
email was a little upset so I'll forgive him/her for their indiscretion.

I am glad I am leaving in 15 minutes to go to Rocky Point. Here we
go...

Let's look at the "anti-smoking" law in Mesa. Under this law you must
be a certain distance away from a public building to be smoking. Part
of the law actually states privately owned public acsessed property.
This means to be in complete compliance with the law in Mesa, you
need to be in the street to smoke. How many times, in Mesa, have you
seen an ash tray in the street? None, right? So the average "Joe"
that is complying with the law and smoking, in Mesa, must throw their
cigarette butt in the street. This is if they are not in their
vehicle, granted. You got to love Mesa.
Some smokers generalize this statement and say, if the city of Mesa
wants us to throw the butts in the street if we are not in a car, we
might as well throw the butts in the street while we are in the car,
what's the difference? This being said, the highway/street in the
city is not going to burn up if a butt is throw on it. If it was
there would NO fireworks this year instead of limited fire works this
year.

Like I said, I am glad I am leaving, in 10 minutes now. Flame away,
you will be here and I will be on the beach.

PS - The opinions above are not necessarily mine and I take no credit
for them.

Well then who's opinions are they?
You are just starting a discussion then leaving....SMART.

In the military they allow smoking on the streets but it is drilled into you
that you flick the head off then put the butt in your pocket until you get
to a place that has an ashtray.

That is they way it should be everywhere.

Joe,
Are you saying that humans are not part of nature. That we are
in some way spared the weight of not contributing to what happens
naturally on this planet because we have frontal lobes and opposable
thumbs. Man has been creating fires on this planet since we figured
out how to make them.
Davids point is valid but in a differn't context maybe:
20 years of Smokey the Bear and immediate suppression of all forrest
fires have led to a serious overgrowth of fuels. So what would have
been a relativly simple brush fire that spreads quickly but not burn
very hot through the low brush now turns into crown fires because it
take the fire longer to consume fuel available on the ground and
gives the fire enough time and heat in one place to heat the trees to
combustion. Add serious drought conditions to this and it is a recipe
for disaster. Many types of pine trees require fire/heat in order to
pop the seeds from the cones so they can propagate. When you really
get down to it, the desert is one of the enviroments that don't
require fire to clean house (rain forrests being another).
I truly feel for those people who are about to lose everthing they
have worked hard for and this is not there fault. It is the fault of
poor forrest management over the last several decades. You take a
certain amount of risk having property in certain areas i.e forrests,
flood plains, at the bottom of an active volcano:-) and I truly hope
that these peoples homes are spared.
Just my .02 worth
