I, for one, am glad the person posted this to the group. I get really pissed
off when I see some idiot toss a butt out of a vehicle. Up and down I-17 you
can see the burns where this has happened.

It's just thoughtless stupidity.

Here it the reply that I sent him:
----------------------------------------------------------------
You're right; the guy was an idiot. But, I don't know who he is either
though.

Just a little info about our "club." We're an online "virtual" club, any
person can join via the website; there are no membership requirements, no
dues. We don't (really, can't) even enforce the "rules" we have, such as
"must own a Jeep", "must live in Arizona", etc.. since we have out of state
members and members that don't own a Jeep. There really is no governing
body. Currently we have about 1800 "members;" of those, I'm sure that there
are some Bozo's like they guy you saw.

As a group, however, we are very aware of the current extreme fire
conditions. For the past 2 months or more, it is the topic of discussion in
one form or another for probably 60% of our mailing list communications. As
a group, we promote responsible land use, T.R.E.A.D Lightly!, etc... As a
group, we organize and participate in clean-ups of popular recreational
areas, such as the Coves of Saguaro Lake.

Every single person I have met from the AzVJC on a trail ride takes
protecting the environment, and our trails seriously. Not all of our members
participate in trail rides; in the past year only ~25% of the membership has
gone on at least one trail ride. Not all of our members are on the mailing
list either; around ~60%. My point here is that although as a group we
encourage responsible behavior, there is a large number that are not reached
in one form or another. So please don't judge our group based on the actions
of one individual.

Rest assured that if someone in our group knows who this guy is, he will be
chastised for his behavior. A little peer pressure goes a long way. If you
have a Jeep, I encourage you to join; just be warned that our mailing list
can generate 100 to 200 e-mails per day. Alot of our mailing list members
choose to receive a digest, or choose to read the messages on the web.

The forrest was not burned by a stupid four wheeler (there you go..
now we are all the same person that started a forrest fire) it was
started by a HIKER and both she AND the news Channel 5 pilot that
picked her up are to blame because neither of them put out the fire!

It can easily be assumed that the extreme fanning that a copters blades have
could have and probably did fan and spread the fire. It'll be interesting to
see how this plays out.

Excellent Mike... absolutely Excellent! Thanks for posting this... I've
seen smokers pitch their cigarette buts out their windows more times than I
care to remember and EVERY time I see a smoker do this I want to drive up
next to them and pitch some kind of crap into their window.

I hope we see the person who owns this red grand cherokee send a post to our
list and apologize rather than send a post to this list and say "I didn't do
it".

Did you send a thank you note to the person who sent you this email? If
not, please do and apologize for the ignorance of one of our members and let
them know that we are taking care of it. I'd be happy to thank them myself
if you'd like... just send met their email address.

Thanks again Mike... we as a group need to see this stuff.

Kind Regards,

Subject: [OT] Cigarette Butts can cause VERY Large Fires

For those that would disbelieve, the Missionary Ridge Fire in Colorado was started by someone throwing a cigarette butt out the window.

I have several relatives with homes, and my parents own property in the Forest Lakes area, which appears at present to have been spared from the fire.

http://durangoherald.com/news/MissionaryRidgeFireMap.htm

IMO, If someone starts a fire by doing something stupid, like throwing a cigarette butt out the window, or starting a signal fire and leaving it, they should be held personally and financially responsible for the damage caused. If just one person dies in the fire, they need to be charged with involuntary man-slaughter.

Tonight the people that started these two fires (Missionary Ridge and Rodeo) will likely be in their homes, safe asleep in their beds, while THOUSANDS of families are displaced from their homes, wondering if they'll have a home to come back to.

Mike,

Very well done. I myself like others who have responded to this get very
upset seeing people toss butts out the window. If they do not want to butts
in the vehicle then why would they think we want them in our environment.
For all of the smokers out there who DO keep the butts in the vehicles I am
sorry you have to hear it but I hope some of these emails hits home and at
least some of you who do throw your butts out the window stop doing it.

If anyone knows a member who has a red Grand Cherokee, who is a

True...there maybe more than one red GC owning smoker, but as your momma
told you....keep your own garbage...don't dump it out the
window...ESPECIALLY if it's a live butt. If you don't know what to do with
it, we can probably provide some creative suggestions.

None.

There is no law against a pilot leaving the scene of a fire... and in fact,
speaking as a pilot... it is a good idea NOT to hang around a fire. If the
pilot was a responsible person (as I suspect she/he was), they would have
radioed Prescott Flight Services and reported the fire... and that is the
limit of their responsibility. If I was that pilot, I too would have done
my best to pick up a person if I thought I could do it safely... to me...
one human life is worth infinitely more than hundreds of thousands of acres
of forest. If the choice is a life or the forest... I'd go for the life
every time.

Fires can be healthy
Mother nature can take care of it's self.
The problem is that sometime we over protect the forests.
A natural fire would have cleared out the brush a long time ago.
Or Sense we won't let natural fires,, we need to clear out all the dead
brush and control burn during the summer.

It's a sad thing to say,, but let it burn and protect the homes!!!

None.

There is no law against a pilot leaving the scene of a fire... and in
fact, speaking as a pilot... it is a good idea NOT to hang around a
fire. If the pilot was a responsible person (as I suspect she/he was),
they would have radioed Prescott Flight Services and reported the
fire... and that is the limit of their responsibility. If I was that
pilot, I too would have done my best to pick up a person if I thought I
could do it safely... to me... one human life is worth infinitely more
than hundreds of thousands of acres of forest. If the choice is a life
or the forest... I'd go for the life every time.

David,

1. This fire was human caused and not natural.
2. It can take hundreds of years for a forest to recover... do you really
want to let it burn freely?
3. You cannot "Let it Burn" AND "protect the homes"... the way you protect
the homes is by putting out the fire.
4. Controlled fires can be healthy for the forest... uncontrolled blazes
such as this are not healthy for anything.

Perhaps you are just playing devil's advocate again and you aren't seriously
suggesting that we allow human caused forest fires to burn out of control
for as long as they want... yes... that must be it.

Kind Regards,

Joe

Outstanding response and thanks for forwarding it. To the doorknob
who did it, your vehicle came with an ashtray when you bought it,
you choose to smoke so choose to use the ashtray, it was not an
optional equipment item.
